QLIPP Sensor VS Sony Tennis Sensor

I have had the Sony Smart Tennis Sensor for a while (Finally Replaced by Sony). I just got the Qlipp Sensor so I wanted to test using the Qlipp Sensor and the Sony Sensor on the same racket.

I put the Sony Sensor on end of my racket and the Qlipp on the strings (I had a hard time getting the Qlipp on the strings but maybe others didn't.)

I connected both devices and use the video mode for Qlipp via my iPad and the video mode for Sony via my Android phone (Qlipp does't have video on Android yet) - I started a hitting session off a back board.

Total Shots
Sony: 81
Qlipp: 81

Forhånd Shots
Sony:41(Topspin) Sony just shows topspin or slice, not flat
Qlipp:28 (Topspin) 21 (Flat) (Says I didn't have any slice shots

Backhand Shots
Sony: 11 (Topspin) 13 (Slice) (Flat) Sony doesn't record flat.
Quip: 1 (Topspin) 15 (Flat) 6 (Slice)

It seems Sony detects a lot more information as Sony would provide Volley BH, Volley FH and give me the number of them and Qlipp does't break it down as simple. Sony will break down the information much deeper where you can look at certain times during the session and see the amount of shots, type and speed and speed. I don't seem to be able to find that on Qllipp.

VIDEO:
The video mode is about the same. It seems they give you the same information but in a different way. I tried to sync up the video so I could tell if they would register the same type of shot the speed and the spin.

Same shot for each device at the some time on the video

Swing Speed - There seems to be around a 5mph difference in the 2 devices - Normally Sony shows higher speeds than Qlipp.
Sony:48mph
Quip:47mph

Ball Speed
Sony: 46mph
Qlipp:n/a

Ball Spin
Sony: +2 (what ever that really means
Quip:Topspin (30) (Not really sure if the 30 is out of a 100)

Sweat Spot
Sony:Sony shows you a graph
Quip: 74 (I guess that is out of 100)

Volley - Seems Sony does a better job here. Sony gives you the Volley as a FH or a BH and spin and speed and Qlipp leaves that blank.
Sony: Does does this better, hands down
Quip: Just will say volley, not if it's FH or BH

Both Sony and Qlipp need some tweaking but I believe with Software upgrades the Qlipp can get better. Sony has already had a few software updates that have made their software better. I hope both continue to try and get more and more information and allow us deep details of our tennis switch.

I saw on their website that they mentioned Android Wear support, but I can't find any actual apps or anything for it. Anyone have any info about this? Also, is there an ETA on when video functionality will be coming around for Android? Not a huge deal because I can just go borrow my mom's ipad, but it's a little bit confusing why it isn't on the Android version yet.

Android wear and Android application is different. I own a Samsung Gear 2 watch but it's not android wear comparable. Also QLIPP said the next version of the android application will have the video.

I'm still having issues getting the Qlipp to hook on the strings with ease. I sure would have liked a clip system instead of the way it's designed. ....again, maybe nobody else is having issues, maybe it's just me.

It was difficult initially. Here's what helped me: try to rotate while push/pulling the final little hook away from the string at the same time. Still not easy but not ridiculous anymore.

Alright, I'm not seeing anything for my moto 360, but I doubt they would leave debatably the most popular Android Wear device out of the loop, so I guess it'll be coming in the future.

Paul what have you found useful about either sensor. Has any aspect actually helped your tennis?

Neither Sony or Qlipp has helped me become a better tennis player. Since I play a lot of doubles, I play more volleys and other types of shots closer to the net so the speed and spin may be lower vs singles where you hit more forehands and backhands from the baseline. The video option does help you see your swing and how well you are hitting certain shots. I think the video function would be the other option that would help improve a user since you can see the swing and the stats for that swing vs just seeing the stats which can't tell you were in the match or hitting session you were at when you hit that shot.

I look at the tennis sensors as a fun techie gadget vs a tool to help me get better.

I feel the exact same about the Qlipp and the Babolat Pop. I used both with a ball machine on Saturday and will provide a review life Paul did comparing the 2. The thing is, just like the Qlipp and the Sony....the Qlipp and Pop offer different metrics and gadgety-things to make you want to play a little more just for the data.

Paul, anything with serves? I will give my little teaser of my review by saying that I hit 2 serves and the Pop captured each one.....while the Qlipp only captured about half, and called them all Forehands. So I was not able to get the Qlipp to record a serve.

I played a double practice tonight (35 degrees here in Atlanta) and I had both the Qlipp and the Sony sensor on my racket.

I didn't notice the Qlipp on the racket at all. Note: I put black tape over the blue led light as it was bugging me flashing and since it was night time, it was really notisably a distraction. I hated the fact that I had to have my phone with Bluetooth on and logged into the Qlipp application in-order to track the data. I liked being about to just turn the Sony sensor on and not worry about it.

The serves, forehand and backhand were the same numbers for each sensor. The volley's are tracked poorly by the Qlipp sensor and there is more of a break down on the Sony sensor. Serves were tracked better on the Qlipp than on the Sony sensor but Qlipp doesn't track over heads and Sony sensor does.

The Qlipp application allows me to store sessions (like how the Babolat Play software did) and Sony only shows you the whole day and you have to scroll over to get information for a certain time frame. I do like the fact that Qlipp gives me a shot by shot breakdown. I can see each shot as they happened. The Sony application is almost useless in that sense but you can get a better over all feeling of your performance.

If I could get the Qlipp application to be used with the Sony sensor we could have the best of both worlds.

Note: I think the video option for each is pretty much the same, I like the video option for Sony a little better.

Note2: I still don't know how you can combine the Qlipp information (sessions) from one device to another. I used my iPad once to record a session for Qlipp and my Android phone to record my match session tonight. I can't figure out how to combine sessions from different devices.

I absolutely believe that....I put a roll of electrical tape in my bag for night play as I could tell it would be a distraction.

Any word of Qlipp recording serves?

Serves were tracked better on the Qlipp than on the Sony sensor but Qlipp doesn't track over heads and Sony sensor does. So Qlipp had me hitting 50 serves and Sony had me hitting 42 serves and 15 smash's. I maybe had 5 over head smash's at the most.

Weird, mine registered no serves, but 80-99mph forehands. I even thought maybe I was doing them too quickly after each one since it was practice. The first set Qlipp caught 3 of 7 serves and called them forehands, the second round I did them slower and the Qlipp registered 9 of 14, again all forehands.

I am in the same boat as you with the miserable weather and it does not look good to get back out for at least a week.....I might suffer through a 40* day just to hit some serves and see what I get.

Did the qlipp give you spin numbers for the serves?

You may need get yours replaced as it should give you serve information. It does give the information on spin and speed. One of the service had (slice) 69

I contacted technical support via email last night and they were really quick to answer my questions and was very helpful. I was having an issue with syncing the data from one device to another. Turns out we discovered a small bug and they said they were going to be fixing it. I'm impressed with their quick support time.

==================
Qlipp Technical Support Reply:

We seem to have identified the issue. Our servers are not linking up the sessions recorded while logged in using Facebook across Android and iOS. The email based syncing works fine.

We will fix this problem on our servers and get back to you when it is done.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused!

I need to give it another try or two and make sure....but then I guess a contact may be in order.

Thanks!

Another little round and all forehands registered for the serve. Contacted Qlipp and they are going to send me an app to download where they can see my serve swing with their algorithms and hope to correct. I told him it was very possible that they missed my serve type since it is underhand :):p

I can't tell if you are being serious about the underhand...

Not really :) I am not sure how their algorithms could have missed my serve....I am 6'4" so my starting point on my Qlipp is about 3-4' off the ground and my contact point is easily 9-10' in the air. That is quite the forehand
