Rafa Passes John McEnroe - Weeks at # 1

Rafa moves into 6th place on the weeks at # 1 list, following the new ranking being released after the Monte Carlo Masters.

Rafa has moved to 171 weeks and passes Johnny Mac on 170. 5th place is Djokovic on 223 which will be a stretch and quite possibly a moving target if Djoker returns to his best form in the future.

The next big milestone around the number 1 ranking that Rafa can aim for is his 5th YE # 1 this year equalling Connors and Federer.

Good luck Rafa! Vamos!

he has never been a convincing world number 1 .
You sure? Is the current week's ranking not convincing enough? He is only slightly ahead of Federer on points and may lose it as early as this sunday. But who would you rather have your current number 1? The one who is a big favourite to win all the tournaments in the next 2 months or the one who has shied away from the competition for the next 2 months?

Congratulations to Rafa and his fans.

I didn't think he'd surpass McEnroe and I definitely thought 2014 was his last stint at no. 1. For me, Rafa's relative lack of time at no. 1 was one of the big weaknesses in his resume, but he's making up for that now, and it looks like he'll be sticking around as no. 1 for a while longer. Incredible stuff.

His biggest competition for #1 skips a whole surface and forfeits 5000 points two years in a row, so in that sense it hasn't been too hard for him for his standards.

Pretty sad that his biggest comepetition is a middle aged GOAT.

While this is true, it doesn't make Nadal's extra time at no. 1 any less meaningful. Nadal, who's turning 32 himself this year, still has to go out and win those 5000 points. The endurance aspect of going deep and winning in 5 clay tournaments over just two months is grueling for a 32 year old, even if the competition sucks. Ive always suspected that one of the reasons Nadal has lost early at Wimbledon is simple because it was no longer physically possible for him to maintain such a high level for both the clay and grass seasons back to back.

Even if Fed played clay, he'd only participate in 2-3 tournaments and would probably win 1000 points maximum with qf and sf runs. Clay exposes Feds diminished movement, nullifies his serve and doesn't suit his take-the-ball-early approach to baseline tennis.
