Raonic has beaten Federer for the first time

Raonic is the deserved winner. He was due a win over Federer after their early close matches in 2012 at IW, Madrid and Halle.

The passing shot Raonic hit on break point just shows how ridiculous the court surfaces are. The fact that men like Raonic/Anderson/Berdych/DelPotro can defend like that shows how slow the courts are.

Raonic too good today, serving extremely well and playing well under pressure.

Fed's movement has been really suspect in Paris, like he is a half step too slow.

As someone said in the match thread, Fed seemed pretty passive. Even though I find him boring, Raonic delivered. Good thing there are more exciting matches coming along today.

Raonic kept on producing good serves at the right moments. He managed to break Federers serve with his tactics of attacking the backhand. Raonic was also unusually consistent, managing to pressure Federer even during rallies, making it hard for him to attack.

If Raonic had sent over more second serves, would have been a completely different story I think. Federer could have used the net game to his advantage, covering for the backhand weakness if the serves from Raonic were weaker. But its impossible to do anything if you get aced.

Raonic played a very solid game. Probably a game plan he has been working on for a long time.

The big guy has an *awe*some serve, and his game has def developed since last year. Fed played well, Milos played almost flawlessly.

It was a high quality match from both, lets be honest. Neither of them made many errors in comparison to winners. Raonic just hit 2 very good shots in the game that he broke Federer, one was a fantastic return winner.

It was a tight match but the better player won on the day, Federer fans shouldnt feel bad about it. Raonic isnt some poorly ranked player either, He is currently the 8th best player in the world.

The second set score simply doesn't compute. Milos broke Federer? Did Fed double fault four times?
It's not the first time Raonic broke Roger. He also did it at Madrid in 2012. He won the first set 6-4 if memory serves me right.

Unbelievable how it's been 2 years since Raonic last broke Roger's serve.......

Didn't they say that Raonic has broken Fed only 2 times including today ?

I didn't see the match, but seems like Raonic just had his day and played great tennis; I thought this would be a tough match for Roger, as Raonic's game seems to have improved and he has that fantastic serve. Of course I wish Federer could have won and kept his chances of ending YE#1 realistically alive, but that's tennis.

Now we can all turn to talking about how Federer is an undeserving #2 because he hasn't won a slam, how can he be ranked ahead of Nadal, Wawrinka, and Cilic.

unbelievable that raonic breaks anyone at all. his return of serve usually is destined for the middle of the net  been the weakest part of his game for what seems like eternity. hopefully he improves this part of his game in the off season

It's about time Raonic started showing big results. He hasn't really lived up to expectations so far.
As for Fed, he's 33. The 20 something top guys should start feeling embarrassed at losing to him. I'm not talking about the field in general but the younger top 10 like Raonic or Nishi ? They should be EXPECTED to beat him at this point...

The bold part is hilarious. While Federer still plays NO PLAYER should be EXPECTED to beat him.

Only one guy comes to mind

Well, that's a fanboy's opinion and it's not objective at all. No reason Fed should not be affected by age like everyone else...

But he's still playing great tennis and is #2 in the world. Why should #7 Nishikori and #10 Raonic be expected to beat him?

He's just hitting that wall you know? Getting closer to 34. Or are you expecting him to stay in top 5 forever just because he is right now? I think his results are amazing for his age but I also think it's starting to feel normal when he loses to younger top guys. It's getting to be more surprising when he doesn't.

On topic, great match from Milos, he is now a deserved qualifier to the WTF. To step up like he did today and put the pressure on Ferrer is really admirable.

No Sampras had more than just a serve.. Raonic is just another Karlovic or Isner

No he is not. He is more than a great server and is a much better player than Karlovic or Isner.

When was the last time Karlovic or Isner made the YEC?

Raonic played like a man on a mission. Very few errors, both bh and fh working beautiful. In fact I've never seen him play so well.

Raonic beats Federer, Nishikori beats Ferer = Raonic and Nisikori have qualified for for London.

Well done, well done!

Federer didn't change tactics in this match. He kept going to Raonic's backhand corner when that clearly wasn't working. Even the breakpoint that Raonic converted, Fed approached inside out to Raonic BH where he was already parked. Too many slice BH returns and slice BHs also cross court into where Raonic was and could hit inside out FHs from.

Roger couldn't hurt him from the baseline - Raonic is not that quick but he got to almost every ball. I think Roger was a little worn out.

Thought Fed was playing better in this match than the two matches he actually won!

Raonic just served great, all match. Then he aces break point down and finds a cross court winner on break point up. Unplayable. No need for Fed to lose sleep over this one.

This kind of results will keep happening more and more often as Federer's career nears to the end. Young players will beat him more often. I still expect Federer to maintain his current level for another 2 years, though.
