ESPN tends to do a lot of stuff wrong lately and I think they need to adjust a lot of their main commentators to a more background role. But I want to give them props for 3 things.
1.) Appreciate some of the duel court coverage they did by airing on ESPN and ESPN2 at the same time. Wish they could do it more.
2.) Better coverage of doubles. Great that they are showning the mixed and women's dubs live on ESPN and not on 3 or +.
and finally
3.) Rennae Stubbs doubles commentary. It is insightful and instructive. If some one new to tennis was watching a doubles match, listening to her would help them understand why and what they are doing. She doesn't just throw out generalities but gives context and deeper insight. I wish all the high school doubles players in the world could listen to her on positioning and stratetgy.
I liked it when she was critical of the dubs players not being aggressive enough and covering the line too much.
Liked the tip that if your opponent has an easy high volley you have to get your hands low because the ball will be drilled down to you.
Also during the mixed dubs final loved it when she ripped Danilina for taking an Overhead when Haliovaara was about to take it. "If both of you can get it, you let the stronger player put it away." No sexism there, just truth.
