Roddick retires from the tennis sport

I really like the fact that Roddick leaves the sport beating an in-form Federer on hardcourt in Miami. Roger said in his post-match interview tonight: "Andy got the last laugh." I think even Federer fans enjoyed watching Roddick play like his old self. Dictating play with the serve and the forehand.

I sincerely hope he doesn't roll over against Tomic. If he's going to retire, he needs to leave it all out there. Go all out. No saving your body. Leave it all on the court.

I hope Andy gives us one more glimpse of the "old Andy". Just one more.

Yeah Andy played a great match in Miami, I really hoped he'd capitalize on that and go on a big run, cause he played amazing in that match. Good for him to get the last laugh against Roger, they have been intertwined for the last decade.

As you can tell by my username, Roddick is my favourite tennis player. He's practically the reason I started playing tennis when I was 11. Obviously I love the game for other reasons now but still sort of sad news for me.

However he's had a great career and I'm happy to have watched him for the last (how many years lol?) 8 or 9 years.

andy's an awesome character and i'm sad to see him go. i've been attending the tournament in san jose for years and he's the one we usually go and see.

cool guy, used to have a huge forehand, even bigger serve, and definitely top 5 all time in press conferences.

maybe he'll come back to guest commentate? would be interesting to hear his comments; i'm sure they're more insightful than the current panel... however, after the mishap with fowler a couple years ago i guess we can count him out!

Ooh, this sounds intriguing.

There were many Roddick bashing threads over the years, I'm glad none of that has shown up in this thread.

Whether it was due to his game, last great US player, or personality, Andy was one of those players who was always in the news, so he will be missed.

Its a reminder to enjoy something while we have it, it will soon be gone! Mark my words, Roger is going to go away from the game just as suddenly.

I would use "juicy" instead of intriguing, but yeah I think it was something bout them criticizing his game, and him saying it's a lot easier to sit in the commentary booth and say that (commentators have an easy job)...something along those lines.

Oh man. :(

I really hate how he's playing now, but I don't want to see this. I want to be let down 90 percent of the time and be excited when he recaptures a bit of magic.

Because it was Andy who got me interested in tennis at first (that AO five-setter back in the day is still my favorite match of all time). Then it was Fed and Nalby. I feel Nalby is going soon, too. I can only hope Fed keeps going. At least Andy will go out saying he won his last professional match against Fed. Unless, for old time's sake, they meet in the final.

Even if you're annoyed at his passive play, his currently loopy forehand, his much-better-but-not-great backhand, his fights with umpires, his crotch grabbing, any tennis fan has to appreciate his on-court fight, his game-changing serve (he still hit 142 the other day, right?), his original power forehand and his smart-aleck press conferences.

I just hope he goes out with a bang, hitting like he used to, and not with a passive whimper.

Never liked his personality but always appreciated his fighting spirit, even against the odds.

On-court personality or off-court personality, or both?

I kind of like both, because I enjoy the idea of keeping the linespeople on their toes (if not ******d in Serena fashion), but his press-conference demeanor was totally different than the bratty maneuvers during a match. Has anyone been as painfully honest and funny about his state of play (usually when it's quite bad)? That's why I really want to see him as a commentator.

Babolat taking a huge hit at this US Open.

First Nadal doesn't play.
Clijsters loses yesterday.
Tsonga loses today,
and Roddick Retires.

Babolat must be scrambling to try and sign someone.

I actually liked Roddick's off-court demeanor even though people say he is too brash because too often the persona that athletes put on in front of the press is so fake. I like his honesty and humor.

It's sad but its sensible. He was struggling with injuries even though he was good enough to win tournaments.

What he achieved is great and would have been remarkable if not for Fed.

Pretty sad stuff, but time is time. I'm sure he'll have a great post-retirement career and I'd LOVE to hear him commentate.

His H2H with Federer ends with a win. :)

Well.. I mean... if he doesn't get far enough to face Rog in this event it does.

Anyone seeing him taking the whole cake, or does everyone think a loss to Tomic is most likely?

I, for one, would not be unhappy in any way if he wins the whole thing. Best way.

Roddick can't meet Federer until the final.

I personally think Roddick will get to the Round of 16 and lose to del Potro, or maybe the quarter finals against Djokovic.

Here's to hoping he wins it all and goes out with a bang. Sad day.

At least he retires top 2 in press conferences with Safin.

Never cared much for his game, but sad never the less. I'm sure he'll be around the game as a commentator or in one form or another.

If he doesn't make it to Djokovic, he retires with a winning H2H against him as well as a last match win with federer

Sad to see andy go.

I thought he was in very good form prior to the injury earlier at the australian open.

he was playing great tennis against hewitt...and then the injury happened.

Sad that andy never tried to make a comeback - i still feel he had one good run back into the top 10, and one more good major run as well.

end of an era...i watched roddick in 2003 win his first slam and i think his love for the game isnt what it once was.

He had a tremendous career, and always gave 100%.

I REALLY wouldn't mind seeing him win this USO.

even if Federer doesn't finish YE#1... Roddick deserves another major. Seriously.

I agree that Roddick would make a lively and funny commentator. I think he'd be much better than the dry and monotone McEnroe brothers any day.

I'm glad that he at least gave Clijisters her time to shine before he announced this. His retirement makes me feel old. He's the first American who I can say I watched his entire career from start to finish and can remember the early days. I'm 32 so the early days of Agassi and Sampras are a fog to me.

this year has just been so odd for Andy.

wins a title in Atlanta, beats Fed in Miami.

looked bad against Ferrer at Wimbledon, and just got destroyed by Djokovic at the Olympics.

who knows what's really going on in his head.

Seeing the Olympics result had me thinking there's no way he plays a 2013 season, because he's simply not in the conversation when it comes to winning big tournaments anymore.

I'll be watching his match tomorrow, that's for sure.

I hope he does retire. I don't like his style of play. He is a funny guy and a good guy, but he makes the game of tennis look even more difficult than it already he is. He has no common sense on the tennis court. He had dumb shot selection when he turned pro and not much has changed.

^^^Agree with this. I was on the Roddick bandwagon when he first came on tour, with all the talent and potential in the world, and he dissapointed time and time again. He went through some of the best coaches in the game and was never able (or willing) to take the extra steps to greatness. Not to mention that he's usually a complete D-bag on the court. I will likely forget about him the day after he loses.

Sad to see what was once probably the best serve on tour step away from the game but I can't say I'm surprised, the last couple of years weren't that great for him and he is pretty old for a tennis player. And I don't think he underachieved, he just happened to run into Federer time and time again at certain slams. He featured in some of the best matches I've seen over the years and I'll always be grateful for that.

I can't believe his first and only slam victory came nearly 10 years ago.

How time flies...

We'll miss you Andy. Please step into the commentators booth. At least we'll have something funny to listen to.

He used to be my favorite tennis player as well, and played a big part in getting me into following tennis. I remember watching him winning the 2003 US Open and was ecstatic for him. Watched all the ups and downs throughout his career...man, it was a roller coaster ride. And yet, most of it seems like just a blur at this point. How time truly does fly...

He will be missed for sure, and I hope to catch his last match.

Fine player and a statesman of the game.
I'll miss him.
I also found it fascinating to watch how he attempted to "evolve" to deal with the new competition coming at him.
Missed his forehand for a long time though - he brought it out for a special guest appearance when he beat Fed earlier this year.

It was time. Thanks for the memories, A-Rod. While you could have made it far easier to cheer for you by not being such a jerk on the court, you also exemplified heart and fighting spirit, never once giving up or rolling over, with your matches against Federer being the prime example. Only Roddick could have taken so many punches from the same guy only to walk out onto the court the next time with the firm belief that this time, the pride of Basel was going down.

For better or for worse, Roddick was the good and bad of tennis all in one package. You've had a great career, and you gave it all you had. Now try and go down firing, eh? No need to hold back now :D

To me this rather makes sense and comes as surprising at the same time. Even though he spent many years at the top level, he was always falling short. But it never looked like he would stop trying. Apparently he's been thinking about it for a long time so guess it's the right time for him.

Never been a fan and very much disliked his shenanigans on court. The really annoying thing though was watching how he drifted away from his power game. I partly blame Stefanski for that.

In the end he was one of those real characters in the game that you wouldn't feel neutral towards. A quite familiar face, and an amazing serve.

What a great hall of fame career by A-Rod! I hope he will be back as a commentator.

While this announcement was sudden, it wasn't too surprising given his steady decline over the last 12-18 months. I think when Roddick realized he could no longer compete for Slams/Masters events, he knew it was his time to go.

That guy was my hero back as a kid. I remember finding a visor and an old Reebok shirt after the match against El Aynaoui and using it for practice. Then I copied the service motion, the forehand, and even though it was unwise, the backhand. Only thing I didn't copy was the Babolat, but that was too expensive. I don't know how to react seeing a player I've loved since I was 9-10 retire, but he's had a fantastic career many people would kill for. I'm gutted that he didn't win Wimbledon though.

imagine how he feels.

really it was all downhill after '09 wimbledon for him.

he walks off the court having beaten roger the last two times they played though (i know the exo doesn't count) and the Miami match.

I would've had recurring bad dreams about that '09 wimbledon match for years.

but I don't feel bad for him.. he's rich and his wife has sweet breasts... that's a winner
