Roger’s BAD decisions in 2017

I knew it and Roger is finally admitting as such: playing Montreal was a bad move!

My only regret was I would have loved to be in contention through the Montreal final, Cincinnati and US Open,” Roger Federer said when asked about his unsuccessful bid to dethrone Rafael Nadal at the top of the standings.

“Part of the plan was in case I had an injury, play while you are injury free. It ended up costing me in Cincinnati and the US Open basically. Was that a good decision? I don’t know. “

With Nadal showing up in Paris to secure YE no.1 and bailing out of the WTF now, essentially Roger screwed himself out of contention more than anything else.

Like I mentioned earlier, hope the Montreal appearance fee was enough to cover a lifetime of regret. Roger should not have chased the money at a tournament he normally doesn’t play; had he given himself enough time to recover from Wimbledon, the USO and YE No.1 would have been on his racquet and terms.

Imagine 20-15 slams vs Nadal instead of 19-16. Sigh.....

Very bad move. The whole move was puzzling. Enjoying a vacation in Italy for a long time after Wimbledon and suddenly showing up for Montreal.

I don't care about the NO 1, but the USO opportunity was lost. How often are we going to get a major where you don't see Djokovic, Murray, Nishikori, Raonic, Wawrinka and a Cilic just coming back from injury ?

He wasn’t chasing the money in Canada, he was chasing #1. He should have been patient. Hindsight is 20/20.

Yes, because Federer is a psychic, could see the future, knew he would be injured, then made the mistake of not thwarting fate

The Masters 1000 don't pay appearance fees as they're mandatory to show up (veteran exception rules aside) so no, Federer wasn't "chasing the money." The guy makes like $58 million a year in just endorsements alone, he's not going to care about a few hundred thousand or a $1 million if he knew it'd risk hurting his career.

Ya'll reading too much into this. There is no guarantee Federer was going to win US Open with the kind of form Rafa was in.

Guarantee? Of course not.

But I don't think anyone thinks he won the USO because he was playing with 2010 form again. Rafa wasn't playing any better in NY than he was leading up to his losses against Federer in Australia, IW, Miami or Shanghai this year. Federer would've been the clear cut favorite had that match-up taken place.

Federer manages his schedule very well I think. Of course Montreal was sort of last minute and not the greatest decision looking back. Its fine though because its been an awesome year for him. 20-15 would be nice and all but it wasn't meant to be. Nadal was a lock as soon as the draw came out tbh.

That's the bit that puzzles me as well. Is he meant to be psychic?

Apparently, he took a long vacation after Wimbledon and maybe didn't exercise enough before Montreal in order to be fully fit. Maybe taking another week off in would have helped, maybe not. Of course, it's now pure theory

He mentioned in interviews that he’d already been hard at work practicing after coming back from Italy post-Wimbledon but he felt that it wasn’t enough compared to match play. I’m pretty sure looking back on it that his injury was back spasms. It has all the symptoms of it. In which case, bad luck because those come out of nowhere and only get better with time and rest.
