Magnificent In Montreal: Djokovic's First Win Against Federer

"During the third set of the 2007 Coupe Rogers final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, a fan in the Montreal crowd shouted that it was “Roger’s Cup", urging the Swiss star on".

“Nothing against the sponsor,” Djokovic said. “But obviously I'm going to have to arrange somebody to call [it the] Novak's Cup for next year.”

I remember watching this match. It was the first time he beat Nadal and Federer back to back to win a big title. I knew then that a third wheel had arrived on tour to upset the nicely balanced tandem that had been ridden by Roger and Rafa for the previous 2 years.

2007 Monreal was arguably Djokovic's first big breakthrough in converting the Big 2 into a Big 3.

He beat #3, #2 and #1 in a row.

I think Djokovic and Nalbandian both had very impressive runs in Montreal and Madrid respectively that year.

Bizarrely, Novak did the exact same thing when they met a few weeks later at the US Open. Sometimes their rivalry just feels scripted. Too many weird coinkydinks.

Actually Djokovic also did that in the service game before that 6-5 game which got him into trouble to begin with.

Andy repeated a back to back defeat of Rafa, ranked #1 and Roger, ranked #3 to win Toronto, 3 years later. He couldn't manage to include #2 as he had already been taken care of by Roger in the semis. His name? The hero of 2007 of course. :)

Somehow Fedfans convinced themselves Djokovic couldn't hang around with peak Federer. Federer was 26 at the time, so the window of peak Fed must've been extremely tiny!

That was a win over peak Federer, no doubt about it.
