Roland Garros moved to September - not a drill

Would be cool if Nadal sided with Federer and boycotted RG. If all the big players boycott this ridiculous move and we have a champion like Tomic or something, it would be priceless.

Don't you think it's ridiculous to take ANY decision, or make ANY announcement at this point?
I think from a strategic perspective, if the FTF know that the FO can’t go ahead in May then makes sense for them to stake their claim to a new spot on the calendar as early as possible. The longer this goes on, the more crowded the back end of the season will potentially become. Coming out early may also mean that they catch players and sponsors before they commit to things like Laver Cup.

For sure, it’s entirely possible that the whole season will be cancelled and the question becomes academic - but if so, they’ve lost nothing by being proactive.

It is definitely a bit of a selfish move though.

They can do what they want with their event, but if they want players then they have to negotiate with the ATP.
If the tour is up and running by September, every player is going to be desperate for ranking points and prizemoney: if the ATP tries to force them to play an exho instead of a Slam then there will be a riot.

That would be uncool to the max, and Nadal is never in a million years missing RG for another tournament, let alone for an exhibition, as long as he knows that he has a good chance of winning it (and it happens so that he is a the reigning champion there, so he probably thinks that he can win it again this year).

French arrogance.

Anybody know when the RG tickets are available to public? Originally was 25.3. or something, but now probably moved forward as well?

Why not like this if it is possible

7/27 Tokyo

8/10 Madrid
8/17 Rome
8/24-9/6 RG

9/14 Montreal/Toronto
9/21 Cincy
9/27-10/11 USO

Let's go for the ULTIMATE: combine all majors into one big, ongoing tournament. Week 1: RG, 1st round; week 2: Wimby 1st round; week 3 USO, 1st round, etc., etc. Players losing in any round would have to join the team scheduling the next round as punishment. If this gets too intense, we could throw in a couple of days of pickleball and give the tennis pros a well-deserved rest.

Just kidding!?

Maybe not even the USO will be held, if the COVID-19 pandemic lasts another 18 months, as scientists from the Imperial College London are predicting. They claim that we will have to wait till the vaccine is available to control the virus.

And, in any case, it seems largely unlikely that the USO will be held but not RG, when the USO is scheduled sooner.
I know, but I don't believe that RG will be held in September and the US Open is in it's normal time slot so only combination that seems logical to me is this:
USO-held
RG-?
Or
USO-cancelled
RG-cancelled also

No chance of Roland Garros being cancelled.
The pompous reaction of US Open has guaranteed that Roland Garros will be played out of spite, regardless of coronavirus.
Rafa will collect slam #21 at Roland Garros.

1) Fed ruled out his participation in RG a long time ago - after having knee surgery.

2) RG Tournament Director Guy Forget called Rafa before making the announcement. Rafa replied that postponing RG was a good decision.

¤¤“We had Rafa on the phone we tried to reach other players,” said Guidicelli during a press conference, according to RMC Sport. “Guy got Rafa on the phone. His feeling is that it is a good decision that allows the clay to stay on the calendar.” ¤¤

The French are fending for themselves. They are far more endangered than Wimbledon or US Open: if either of these two were to have been played in May, I wouldn't be surprised if they also were suddenly postponed later in the year. Roland Garros is defending its revenue, that's all. US Open at the moment sits cozy in September: they have no right to moral preaching. And Wimbledon is going to be kicking itself if it gets cancelled while RG is staged in September. We are talking about a huge money loss for all of them here. Solidarity? Please.

Nadal isn't boycotting anything. He gave it an ok when RG consulted him.

That reveals a level of desperation in Rafa, not to mention selfishness. He wants #20 so bad he's willing to get it from a depleted, tired, unprepared field of players, as well as ruin The Laver Cup which has spent months preparing and selling out tickets, and has a good portion of the worlds best players under contract to be in Boston.

it's a shame, Federer and Nadal were getting on so well.

Who’s already “under contract” to play Laver Cup? Teams haven’t even been named yet.

no worries, negotiations will be starting soon. :p
i imagine they were under the belief the Asian tournaments were off the table anyway, so every player would rejoice.

I am sorry for this silly question but isn't the Laver Cup an Expo, akin to the Harlem Globetrotters versus the Washington Generals.

Roland Garros had 520,000 spectators in 2019. Capacity at TD Garden is 19,580; over 3 days that 58,740 people through the turnstiles.

The FFT is being proactive, now the world is p*ssed.

That's not really the way to do business, and it's not really about a few players rejoicing. It's about money and how much the FO will pay.

You're wrong, of course, but the FO is obviously more important. But the ATP has seen its slots poached so they'll demand compensation.

What if Wimby and USO want to move around the same date? Can we have 3 slams in 3 months for the first time?

Just came here to say that Raphla will be the first player in world history to win 3 slams in 3 months.

(PS : What is bullzie's latest account these days ?)

i meant that most players might rejoice as RG pays more money. and what do you know about business, haha haha :p

cancelling a Slam is also probably pretty bad because of the GOAT problem. they might write that RAFA was ROBBED or so.

If a competitor muscles in on your turf and tells you to get out of the way that's pretty obvious schoolyard behaviour.

I made that exact same point earlier today. That and nobody cared when Laver Cup was scheduled during the same week as other tournaments like St. Petersburg.

So what if the ATP approved a Wimbledon move to just after the USO?

What if this standoff is really between which of Wimbledon and the FO can find a slot to run their slam?

We know from the recent statement that the AELTC is the good guy negotiating, and the FO is the one who is their bad guy acting unilaterally.

@The Blond Blur I don't why anyone is taking the Laver Cup seriously? They play a 10 tiebreaker after splitting sets. It's a fun expo. That fact that the ATP runs it does not make it less of an expo. This event should be at the end of the year.

So what if Wimbledon moves into a new slot after the USO with full ATP approval?
Dude we've been over this, ITF events don't need the approval of the ATP and vice versa. As far as Wimby is concerned, the ITF has come out and said that all their events will be suspended until June 8th. That is after RG will have been concluded, meaning as of now Wimby will remain in its scheduled slot (not to mention grass tennis would be much more difficult to pull off in October). The FFT rescheduling of RG makes more sense now. There must have been closed door meetings, so they learned that the ITF was going to further suspend the season, so they proactively moved the event during one of the deadest points in the season. Laver Cup has already set the precedent of being scheduled during other long-standing ATP events without a peep from fans.

@Bartelby it's as if the FFT is acting like the organizers of Laver Cup.

AELTC is in a bad spot regardless. Weather and Tradition is working against them. August is 4 months away; we can hope for a green light for that date. But you can't call the FFT the bad guy for acting in their interest...kinda like the Laver Cup.

They do need the players and that means the ATP, and I've been over this with you as well.

Wimbledon is still on track to be held as usual, but if that becomes impossible it will probably move to after the USO with the ATP's support.

A clay slam can be held in late autumn, whereas a grass one probaby can not.

Fed fans would indeed prefer to see Wimbledon held, rather than cancelled, but it is the BIG SLAM.

As organisations prefer to postpone rather than cancel both the English and the French are fighting for slots.

And again, good luck trying to get the player’s approval for playing Laver Cup over any slam. There's a reason Wimby is held in the summer, it won't work in the fall, plus RG has already been rescheduled to its current slot. Saying that the players would support playing Wimby over Laver Cup, but not RG is more baseless speculation and wishful thinking on your end.

If the USTA was any type a friend to AELTC they would look into moving the US Open to Indian Wells in October. It's the last month of decent weather in the desert. It's a world class facility for both players and fans. I only suggest this because it seems like the USTA is more interested in taking potshots at the FFT then finding a solution.

When Laver Cup was scheduled during the same week as a couple of ATP tournaments, these tournaments weren't cancelled.

Why should other tournaments be cancelled, when RG is also scheduled during that week ?
The ATP organisers want to give every possible chance for Nadal and Djokovic to overtake Federer's slam count. The race between The Big 3 is THE big story in the sport and brings in so much revenue. They will do everything possible to keep all 4 slams this year, even if it means cancelling a few meaningless ATP 250's/500's.

So it’s Wimbledon - > olympics -> us open -> laver cup -> French open ... all in span of 2.5 months with little to no warmup tournaments i between? Lol

More likely although still speculative:

USO - 31 August to 13 September

Laver - 25-27 Sept

Wimbledon - 28 Sept to 11 October with China and Japan events out

FO - 26 Oct to 8 Nov with Basel and Paris cancelled

So it’s Wimbledon - > olympics -> us open -> laver cup -> French open ... all in span of 2.5 months with little to no warmup tournaments i between? Lol
