Rooting for Rafa Nadal to win the WTF

The guy just deserves it after the year and career he's had.

As a Roger fan, I've been won over this year by Nadal. I started being more appreciative of his game after he won the USO the first time, but what he did this year, especially during the summer hard court swing was absolutely phenomenal.

I love aggressive players and in my mind, Nadal seemed to made an adjustment one time and then fallen back to his old ways. But he showed again this year what a great student of the game he is. He may not have been born with the talent of my man Federer, but boy has he added so much to his game which I thought was impossible.

This WTF title will complete his resume and I'll be rooting for that. Vamos Rafa!

He only deserves it by winning it, the past year has nothing to do with it.

Good luck however! :)

What do you mean the year has nothing to do with it? The best player of the year winning the year-ending title would be a fitting cap. Roger did it so many times. What's wrong with wishing the same for Nadal?

My parents love federer but they have also become more and more fans of rafa, specially because he improves his game all the time. They call it new school. Hehe.
But yes, rafa deserve to win also. But it will not be a big hole in his legacy if he doesnt. He has done so much for his age already. Though there are pretty big odds he will winn more GS :)

Pretty cool that your parents follow the game closely and are able to appreciate Rafa....

It fits if he wins.
I hope him the best not only in this WTF but everywhere.

I'm not a Nadal fan but his importance to the game is nothing short of huge and adds immeasurable excitement... for me anyways.

That is quite cool from you. It is lovely to appreciate the other players as well. And to do that with Roger and Rafa is more easy, they are very unique. Nevertheless, it takes guts to admit. Kudos!

Agree with Talker. This is really disrespectful for Djokovic.

Why disrespectful? Cheering for one player means disrespect to the other?

In any case, I said I'm cheering for him, not that he's a lock for the win. A difference perhaps that was lost on Talker and yourself.

Well, I pray and hope that Nole wins it because he is clearly the player in form atm and so he deserves it more.

As A Fed's fan too, I agree with you. He deserves it to end this amazing year perfectly !
Also, it's the only big title missing in his resume, and as a very talented and great player he deserves this title.

Novak deserves it, he is by far the most consistent player in this year and he has yet not got the rewards commensurate with that.

Nadal, inspite of 1 absenteeism and one 1st round loss seems to have had a phenomenal year.

Novak's group was leaps and bounds tougher .

This. I don't understand all these people who say "Nadal deserves it"?
How they can say that after the ridiculously lucky draw and laughably favorable schedule he "deserves it".
Not to mention Novak's still ongoing unbeaten streak and domination on indoors (and others) courts lately.

If anyone "deserves the WTF title" it is Novak.

That is why I said OP and others are quite disrespectful to Novak.

this surface gives Novak the decisive advantage due to low bounce. Rafa will be crushed. and Novak will win the Aussie open 2014 too.

May the best man win.

I can understand saying that Nadal deserved the number 1 ranking after winning 2 slams and 5 masters event, but he doesn't deserve the match tomorrow anymore than Djokovic does.

nadal will have to play aggressive and tactical to beat djokovic.

djokovic is a great test for nadal. Djokovic is the only player on tour currently with the game and mentality to test nadal's limits.

nadal knows that moonballing tomorrow wont get the job done.

nadal was way the hell off his game today.

he has to try to elevate his game tomorrow and nole needs to be a little bit off.

nadal`s return of serve and his backhand were just too shaky. he has to try fix some of that tomorrow.

I was not happy with his court positioning. when he is shaky, his court positioning is horrible.

I think the man is just spent at this moment.

It would definitely be an insane cap off to his year.

If he wins this, I would definitely put 2013 as his all time best year, just considering all of the circumstances- coming back from injury, beating Djokovic in that epic RG match, winning the Canada-Cincy-USO hat trick, 5 master titles, etc.

He will definitely need to play a match for the ages though, because Djokovic is looking extremely unbeatable right now.

I really cant see nadal wining tomorrow.

I took a close look at his match today. nadal was playing quite poorly.

what worries me is the following:

1. the return
2. backhand
3. extreme fatigue--he is not moving well at all. there is no pep in his step.

so it will be one hell of a surprise if he takes it.

nole is playing the best tennis right now. he has to be the favorite.

Oh, wow! My parents will never agree on anything sports related, and they do not follow tennis anymore. My mom being Swedish herself was a huge Edberg and Borg fan, while my Dad was a McEnroe and Sampras guy. My dad is Norwegian and never rooted for anything Swedish  Anyway, I only follow tennis, but my parents are such sports fanatics. If there's a hockey or football game, it's best to leave the house or you'd turn deaf from all the shoutings and whistlings. They are the total opposite of each other not just in sports but career-wise too. However, sports is the only thing that can make my parents not talk to each other for a week and most of the time, my mom is the aggressor. My mom is a cardiologist but totally heartless, is beyond reason and such a sore loser when it comes to sports and everything in general. My dad used to teach history, philosophy and political science before he took his new job. My dad is the most patient and diplomatic guy I know, but even he has to drive for hours after a sports discussion with my mom. They are so competitve. Last year they went to Portugal and when they came back I visited them. I noticed they were not talking to each other, so I asked. My dad said: "I beat your mom in scrabble and now she doesn't want to talk to me". I said come on mom, it's just scrabble. She said:"you know what, I probably lost because I trusted your dad with the counting even though I know math is not his subject. Did you know he flunked two math exams in when he was in the 9th grade?".

Haha! Parents can be like kids sometime!
My uncle played professional tennis. My father very interested in sports and very athletic. But in my family it is formula uno, tennis, alpine sports and some football. My mother nor very competitive, but my father is. And me. So we have a lot of argument...happy my mother likes to cook and those kind of things.
I had it quit sports 17 years old because of my knee(same as Rafa), big disappointment for my father and me. I have also Scandinavian blood! I am a mix of two european nations.

My mother likes Federer because he is stylish.. And of course Bjørn Borg.
My father mcenroe, sampras like you dad and now Rafa! They live in a different country than me now and they get jelous when I go to Wimbledon and WTF. My father gets very childish and start to brag about all the matches he has been to which was so much better. Lol

Me too I'm rooting for him also. Too bad a lot of Rafas fans here are bad. Sometimes it makes is harder, but still, I know it's not Rafas fault.

To be fair, there are a lot of great Rafa fans still around. They are just humble and don't make so much noise, so it sometimes seems they don't exist. But we know better.

And it's not that emotional rooting for Rafa, because he doesn't make that many errors. He is very consistent and his matches don't fluctuate so much.

Rooting for Rafa on clay is actually very relaxing. You know the score in advance. Also, it's not the matter of if, it's the matter of how he wins.

I quit because it was too painful. I couldnt perform my best.
What rafa does is something very special, people are not aware how much pain he is in every single day.
The way you are responding to me is offensive towards me. I became depressive because of my choice, my family aswell who had big hopes.
It was very difficult for everybody.

What Talker said is right. Every tournament is a tournament on its own and you only "deserve" to win a tournament based on the way you've played during that tournament. You don't deserve to win a tournament because you've played well in other tournaments this year. And there's nothing wrong with wishing that Nadal wins.

Sorry, you misunderstood. I didn't mean it like you took it. I was asking, if Rafa has the same problems and he does it, maybe you could learn something he does it and do it too. And I'm sure he is putting even more stress on his body than you, considering he is an elite athlete.

Dont think you know much about that injury.
Rafa plays with pain, he is able to do it. Most people dont.
He got it early as I did. It is about the pain. Nothing to learn about that, you have your own limits of how much you can tolerate. I played for 4 years with it, how rafa is able to do it is very special.

I'm with the OP. Nadal's win (if he does win) would be the icing on the cake in a spectacular year. As a Federer fan I was disappointed that he wasn't able to play more consistently, but one can't be too hard on Roger. He really tried in that semi, but just wasn't good enough on the day. We should give credit to Nadal for playing a superb semi. Let's see if Nadal can carry that same form into the final match of the year, :)

I guess maybe Rafa is mentally the toughest in history. What is even more crazy to me is, that even with his injury and putting so much stress to it, he can still play.

I actually have this injury. But thank god I don't play sports professionally. I'm just doing table tennis casually and fitness and some stuff. And even this little stress injured me. I guess it's overusing and bad technique.

I guess when you are fat, it's not a good idea to play table tennis all days, even if it's only for recreation, or lifting too much weight.

Fat is very bad for joints. I wasn't that fat, just about maybe 30 pounds.

So, even non-athletes can get injured. I can understand your pain. I had a dream to play sports also, but I didn't have the right conditions. Money, parents supporting me, access to good coaches.

I know, but isn't tendonitis overusing and bad technique? I feel if I weren't overtraining and using a bad technique and form I wouldn't get it.

Just saying, we can't give up so fast. Maybe it's too late for us, but your son has a chance.

Maybe nutrition also plays some part.

It is not really about the technique. It comes from overuse yes, but two persons can train same way and both not get the injury.
Dont really think it is about nutrition either.
I never trained as much as rafa.
No one knows why some get it and others dont.
Rafa has his foot that did it, but often there are no spesific reason for it.

Time to sit and watch a good thrashing. Nadal against prime Djokovic on low bouncing courts? This is like Graf vs. Seles on grass.
