Everyone is having difficult time hitting winners in this fluffy AO. Even Nadal's otherwise sure-winners were picked up by a below top-100 teenager

Only Berdych is the least affected because he has the height and therefore the extra angle where he can place the fluffy ball away from his opponents.

Jerry you got that right. Somehow I see Sod and Berd come through their qtr matches.

Federer scares the crap out of me with this match. He could go down in the next round.

This may be nothing but have you ever seen Nadal twist an spin his racket while waiting to hit the ball (either in serve or return) no never.

Smetimes I wonder if Fed's endless axis-spinning of the racket in his hands doesn't add to the shanking

For goodness sake, Fed's been doing this since at least his Wimby Jr title days in 1998. Doesn't seem to have affected his 16 slams much.

Not likely if it's Roddick.

Ehh, you never know. Soderling was Rafa's pigeon just as he was Roger's, and he beat Roger in 2010 French as badly as he beat Rafa in 2009. And if it's Wawrinka, I can see Wawrinka taking that sweet one hander into Fed's for shanks galore.

I really hope i'm wrong though, and I hope that Federer can raise his level of play. I could definitely see a 2008 USO Federer just breaking out from Quarterfinals on.

But if the courts is faster you don't need to rip a massive ball because the court will help you out. Hitting a winner on a slower court requires you to use spin and strategy to win the point. I wouldn't say Nadal uses junk balls. Tomic is a junk baller for sure. Nadal just takes advantage of great spin to put opponents in bad situations. That is smart IMO.

So basically what you're saying is that spin, in your opinion, is the only really valid tennis shot?

Not being ageist, but as someone said, maybe 5-day cricket may more be to your liking - the speed should just be about right for you :)

yeah, but soderling got a lot better.

roddick hasn't been playing great. serving well like always but fed would have to play extremely, extremely bad for roddick to win after seeing andy's ground strokes this tournament. wawrinka could easily beat andy tonight.

The difference is that others don't have nearly as much trouble with short court balls. He just has trouble generating any sort of pace. He probably doesn't even hit that many winners on other surfaces either.

Robredo should watch the malisse/federer match and take some notes on how to hit the ball hard.

he he, I like test cricket a LOT, but I gotta agree there.

But even in tests, its the players who are aggressive/dominant who get the most attention

OK, what's Nadal's lifetime ratio of winners to UE's?

What are his total lifetime winners and lifetime UE's?

Unless you can recite these statistics, your argument is bogus.

It would be really nice to read a thread on a Federer thread without seeing your stupid freakin' avatar dumbing things down with derailing debates about how great Nada.

How in the hell can Robredo take a set off Federer?

Well, Robredo was serving well and literally made only 1 unforced error in that set I think. And Fed made 3 UE and a Double fault in one game at 4-3, with the UE on breakpoint missing by 3 meters

27 straight slam QF !!! :)

roger already had the open era record for consecutive slam QF (2nd: lendl with 14), but with this 27th consecutive QF he also ties connors for the record of consecutive QF for "entered slams".

wow robredo is incredibly boring to watch, i guess fed got so bored through the second set and went to sleep, expected with a 9-0 record against him, this is where the tournament really starts, going to be some amazing shot making against wawrinka, going to very tough if wawrinka plays like he did today. Obviously rog didn't play well today and is going to have to raise his level against wawrinka which im sure he will, but tbh i think he just sleep walks through the first 4 rounds in slams especially if he has a really positive h2h against someone, and when he gets pushed he just turns it up and then cruises, simon was an exception.

Connors run ended in the fourth round of 1983 Wimbledon on the graveyard court 2. Curren beat him 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.

Fed played sub substandard. He played maybe 1 great set. Robredo had every opportunity to grab the 3rd by going up a break early in the 3rd instead of going down a break but Robredo muffed a few easy shots to lose his serve instead of holding it and he muffed an easy backhand pass just wide at 30-40 break point on Fed's serve early in the 3rd.

If I recall correctly, Fed FIRST went up a break, before Robredo could have broken. I agree Robredo could have done better, but he wasn't winning that 3rd set if he played one point better or something.

yeah same here. In fact, Robredo taking a set off Federer is like Pikachu killing Raichu, or smth.
Its the usual Federer second set syndrome, or whatever, when he starts shanking, and goes to sleep. a.k.a "********". Not an issue with the lower ranks, but with berdy/soderling etal...
