Seriously ......What is Sampras thinking right now ?

Sampras had his time being hailed as GOAT.
Records are meant to be broken and and an elite athlete like Sampras would have thought that his records would be eclipsed some day but he must be shocked to see that his records were surpassed so quickly and that too by three players.

While he would be very proud of his accomplishments, he would also be sad to see his place drop among the tennis greats conversations.

Sampras can be happy by logging into TTW and knowing that in my GOAT list he will still be 3rd and Nadal winning his 21st Slam won't change that.

Actual GOAT Race for me =

(Grand Slams + WTF wins + Years ended as Rank 1 + Alternate Tour Finals wins )

01. Federer (20+6+5+0) = 31
02. Djokovic (18+5+6+0) = 29
03. Sampras (14+5+6+2) = 27
04. Nadal (20+0+5+0) = 25
05. McEnroe (7+3+4+5) = 19
06. Lendl (8+5+4+2) = 19
07. Borg (11+2+2+1) = 16
08. Connors (8+1+5+2) = 16
09. Becker (6+3+0+2) = 11
10. Agassi (8+1+1+0) = 10
11. Edberg (6+1+2+0) = 09
12. Wilander (7+0+1) = 08

People who acknowledge Laver is still GOAT:

Um. You just explained exactly why Rafa is so effective at the net! Who cares if his volleys are "easy"? It only matters that they work!

And for the record, I said Rafa is one of the best volleyers in the game currently (I believe the stats support that claim). I don't think Rafa is an all time great volleyer.
Point is, he would struggle on fast grass.

I agree with this... almost. We need to add Master 1000 titles and Olympic Golds to the tally of course.

1. Novak: 65
2. Nadal: 62
3. Fed: 59
4. Sampras: 38

The man ended his career as a statistical GOAT, was the outright Wimbledon GOAT and is currently shared GOAT at the US Open and in around 10 days time the Nadal can equal Sampras entire grand slam career at just 1 slam. Pretty amazing stuff. Do you think Sampras will have a message for Rafa or congratulate him, or do you think Sampras will be furious with this and try to cause some outrage.
If i was in Petes shoes I’d have numerous plans up my sleeve to stop the Nadal from fulfilling this outrageous accomplishment

1. Live video link directly hooked up to Chatrier of Pete breaking into Nadals Spanish villa and re-arranging all of Nadals scatter cushions and emptying the fridge of all the water bottles and placing them on the side with absolutely no care. Nadal being concerned about the labels facing forward is irrelevant, Sampras rips them off because he doesn’t care. Water bottles to Nadal are what Horcruxes are to Voldemort, Sampras knows this

2. Sampras visits Chatrier himself but because he is so tall the 30 degree conditions are negated as his head blocks out all sun ( like that sun blocker mr burns created in the simpsons ) the conditions now favour Pablo Careno Busta and he wins his first slam 1-6, 6-0,6-0,6-0

all jokes aside, I do think he will be happy but also slightly rejected , I’d say he would feel even worse if Nadal gets a 5th US open however ......
I think that, today, Pete is not concerned that his once slam and Wimbledon records have been broken. He had one of the greatest careers in tennis history, so there is no reason for Pete to be sad about the accomplishments of Roger, Rafa and Novak.

I wonder how many GS would have won Sampras playing in the same era of Federer and Djokovic.
Maybe 1 or 2?
Nadal has won 20GS (for now) in this era.

Olympics obv no one cares....hehe

Advantage with Nadal is that this guy is assured of 10-14 Clay Slams in almost every era, make that 10 for sure.

So other greats might have to divide a few here nd there when youngsters come up, in Nadal's case he is so far ahead of oldies, his gen, next gen, youngsters ... everyone around for decades.

So thats a huge plus that nobody has, someone like Sampras suffers a lot of Federer and Novak are around.

Pete is a man who got to live his dreams. He is enormously proud and humble at the same time about his career. Watch his HOF induction. I doubt Pete is in any way bitter. He most likely gets that tennis is a business that needs to grow and that the records thing is an inevitable part of that. I don't think it is any secret among pros that the tours help the records along in their own ways. Federer himself is on record saying the stats are now inflated. But I don't think Pete cares one jot. He has a very privileged status in the game as it is, a legend; if you go on stats, the fourth-sixth best of all time, and if you go on his game and the limitations of his era, maybe even your GOAT.

"Greater variety of Slams" LOL.

Sampras never won RG. Nadal has won all 4 Slams and has the Career Grand Slam.

In terms of variety:

1 Career Grand Slam >>>> 0 Career Grand Slam.
Except that’s not what this thread is about. This thread specifically addresses someone winning more titles at a single slam is more impressive than all the slams Sampras won combined.
Keep defending Rafas honor with your life good sir.

Both Agassi and Sampras had to retire, because they're playing with a lot of pain. They had no choice!

Playing with pre-space age racquets did that to a lot of bodies!

Sampras knows he played in a far stronger era where it was difficult for the top players to win a slam. He knows he probably is the goat together with Borg.

Yep, 90s was already the most competitive era, plus with 16 seeds only in GS,

now those first weeks in GS are boring to death

Roland Garros is the reason why Sampras was unable to cement himself as GOAT during the 90s.

Sampras announced his retirement in 2003 with 14 Slams and 6 years later in 2009 the ponytailed fellow was on 15 Slams.
Another 11-12 years later there are 3 hunters sitting on 20 slams/close to that.

Pete must be wondering if he could have added a few more slams under his kitty.

He retired as the best of his era, the GOAT up to his time. He has health, a beautiful wife and family, and plenty of money in the bank.

He is not losing any sleep over the 3 guys who are still trying to be the best of their own era.

I agree, it’s better to be the best of your era like Sampras was then to be third best of your era like Thirdwheelovic (And probably would have been fourth best if Andy Murray wasn’t injured).

Third Wheel ?
R u a fool ?

Djokovic is the APEX PREDATOR of his decade,

In the last 10 years out of 520 odd weeks he has been ranked 1 for 320 odd weeks and won 17 slams.

3rd wheel ? The only reason why Federer (16 slams before his 29th birthday) is still on 20 slams at age 40 is because Djokovic was there to take all the non clay slams.

Nadal has been owned by Djokovic outside clay ....

Djoker is the ruler of the 2010s decade just like Federer was the ruler of the 00s decade and Sampras was the ruler of the 1990s decade.

I personally think conditions are so homegenized today that you can’t even compare the 80’s/90’s to today. You can win any of the 4 slams playing the exact same way with little change in tactics and game plan. It was completely different back then as you had actual specialists and play styles were far different on all the surfaces. The career slam isn’t as valuable as it used to be. A guy like Lendl had to try to completely change his play style in order to have a chance at Wimbledon. Can you imagine Nadal trying to win Wimbledon with serve and volley? He wouldn’t stand a chance.
Lendl would have multiple Wimbledon titles if he played on this slow modern grass courts

Clay season or not though if I was an ex player that was at one point a goat and to have my entire slam count equalled by a player at just 1 slam I’d be both furious and amazed at the same time. I’m sure someone will have told him even if he doesn’t have any interest as you say
Pete had a great career, but he pretty much stopped caring about tennis as soon as he retired.

He has always come across as a pretty well rounded guy who has too much going on in his life to be overly concerned with how well people think he hit a ball over a net twenty to thirty years ago. The old dodderers who are obsessed with their legacies give off a serious ‘peaked in high school’ vibe.

You’re a long time retired and honestly there’s a lot more to life than how successful and famous you were when you were young.
