Should Federer take break from Tennis?

He just won the Laver Cup........
BRUH WHAT
He beat opponents that you’d find in quarterfinals and below at masters or grand slams. Apart from a good run at Wimby it’s been a desolate stretch since Miami. And yes, a semi at RG after a cupcake draw that ended with him getting dusted is not an encouraging result.

He's less than 2 years from his 40th birthday and is world 3. Barring injury, of course he's still going to be automatically qualifying for draws when he turns 40.
Birdman was Top 10 at the start of 2017 and is now off the face of the planet.

Anderson was Top 5-10 in 2018 and is now nowhere to be scene.

Yes they have struggled with injuries, but what's stopping injuries also plaguing Fed?

What are you talking about?
Does he move better than 10 years ago? No.
But he still moves better then most of the young guys on tour.
His footwork is still remarkable and you're blind if you can't see it.
It’s dramatically worse. He’s just hanging in rallies he should be finishing early against guys he should be beating easily. He used to have the best footwork on tour by a lot even a few years ago. Now, he’s regressed to the pack.

He lucked out not having to face Sock

You forget a minor detail, the guy is 38 years old, buddy.

Nothing but an accelerated decline awaits him. Do you think someone who has been called the GOAT for most of his career will still hang around after he’s no longer competitive in slams or even BO3? His ego and legacy will not allow him to.

He enjoys the game, even if he falls to just being top 20 but without injuries he could continue play. People adore him and would fill the stadiums even if he lost every single match he plays. Him still playing is more than trophies, more than legacy - its just pure joy. How many players would do what he did today against Zverev while having a bad day at the office ?! And again what is the problem that he is 38? Just appreciated him for every added year. Borg retired at 25, Sampras at 31, Agassi at 35 - people constanly said that his time is closing since 2011 - almost ten years later he is top 3 in the world .

That's why I said "barring injury".

Why should he take a break from tennis? If anything, he is still playing better than he did at that time of the year in 2018. At this point of their careers Zverev should be expected to beat a 38 years old Federer. The joke is not that Zverev won but that he somehow found a way to choke the second set away from 5 matchpoints. It shows most players are still afraid to finish Federer, even in matches where they play much better than him. On the other hand losing to Coric in Shanghai 2018 was really bad. Back then it looked like Federer is done.

Was Federer supposed to beat Zverev on hardcourts in best of 3? I think Zverev was always going to be a formidable foe in this setting for pretty much anyone if he's mentally right.

It has really gone down hill for him.

Fast too! After the Wimby semis, it looked like Rafa's season was about to wind down, Djokovic would have a firm grip on YE#1 and Fed would remain the slam leader. Nadal has casually and epicly become the man :D

You know Rafa is somewhere relaxing and not watching Shanghai. He was probably somewhere in the ocean sipping a cocktail shirtless while he got a text that he will be #1 again lmao

Can we quit these “break” threads for these guys. Zverev is 22 and should just be entering the prime of his career. Considering BO3 is his speciality, losing against a 38 year old who is old enough to be his father would’ve been a joke on Zed.

Fed is a mentor of sorts to Zverev. He'll be fine. Basel will give him a boost and his weeks record looks safe for now. Tsitsipas gave him an early Christmas present. It's not all bad.
Tsitsipas... The goat saviour... :-D
Goat is sinking as we speak, as he need Tsi and Nad to save him...

Uhhh, yeah? This is 2019 Zverev who had no top 10 wins before facing Fed.

Breaks won't help him.

He had had a long break from facing Djokovic before Wimb this year and added 3 slams oin the meantime. You'd think not playing Djokovic for a long time and gaining some confidence by winning 3 slams would have helped. But he still played as bad against Djokovic as before 2017.

No breaks will heal Wimb 2019. There is no recovering from that.

If he wins another slam, it won't be because he has recovered from 2019 Wimb. It will be because Djokovic got taken out before he would face him.

Medvedev is the real deal.

He eats ATP players for breakfast.

Djokovic on the menu for Australian breakfast.

The idea that the best way for him to get over 40-15 is by not playing is crazy. He's got to get back on the horse and ideally face Nole ASAP

Getting wildcards into every draw ranked 250 any tournament in the world? At 38 he's serving to win W ! At 40 he'll still be the number one draw in tennis. He's barely in top 20 form at 38

Fixed.

It eventually happens to everyone. Federer's movement is noticeably garbage compared to even a couple years ago. Only thing he's got is serve.

His "garbage movement" has him serving to win W 3 months ago and his "garbage movement" keeps him better than 99% of the tour.

To be fair, Zverev already showed a few times that he can suddenly up his game. This is what happened in WTF 2018 for example. If one told me after his RR match against Djokovic that Zverev is going to win the title beating Djokovic in the final I would never believe that.

So IMO that Federer's loss was not nearly as terrible as losing to Coric in Shanghai 2018. He is still playing better than he did last year.
