When he yelled "**** you" at the umpire? The code violation system is a 3 step system (warning, point penalty, default) But umpires are allowed to bypass it if a player goes too far(& Agassi was actually defaulted in '96 without first getting a point penalty)
I generally have no problem with audible obscenities in tennis if they aren't directed toward anyone(or if they are said so quietly that no one hears it)
But no one should be allowed to get away with something so blatant. Even Pmac said "Andy's lucky he only got a warning."
In the NBA, no player would be allowed to get away with something so blatant. They would get tossed. The officials in that sport generally have more of a spine & don't take anything from players. It's understandable in an individual sport for players to get more leeway(because a default would result in the match ending, fans would be upset etc)
I also thought it was bad form for Andy to continue to yell at the umpire on the changeover after he got away with one. The umpire should have said, "I could have defaulted you, so stop whining."
Frank Hammond(anyone remember him?) told Nastase/Connors stuff like that all the time in the 70s. and both players respected an umpire who stood up for himself.
