Should they have held Wimbledon?

Looking back did they make the right decision to cancel Wimbledon or could they have worked something out? Both the USA and France held their slams without any major incident even though both countries had a lot of covid-19 cases. France reserved dates in September/October and they managed to make things happen, I wonder if the UK could have done the same and saved Wimbledon this year?

Also looking forward to 2021, do you think there's a chance that the AO might not happen? Australia seems to take the pandemic very seriously with extreme rules so if the Covid-19 cases are not very low they might not take a chance!

I guess we'll always have Paris! :-D

The British tennis association is LOADED.

Give everyone a mask and a visor (a tiny portion out of Wimby's budget), reduce the crowd to a doable number (every third seat or something) and it would have been doable. Organize private flights for the players (those that need them), make other arrangements, and voila...

They could have made it work, but apparently there was no political will. Actually, no idea who made the decision.

I don't blame them for canceling it IF they were powerless, but... fact is the other two were played afterwards.

If USO and FO had bought pandemic insurance, they would have cancelled too

I wonder to what extent he would suffer from the courts being slower now.
To the extent he'd not win any slams whatsoever.

Ever witness a match in which Pete plays numerous long rallies yet wins most of them - against a top-class baseliner?

Maybe once or twice.

Now take away the big serve to give him that many free points...

He was still able to win on courts slower than grass, especially hard courts. He was not just a big server obviously.

I heard the WB is somehow insured. So they made the same amount of money (?) by not doing anything and claiming a Covid loss?
Apparently after SARS in 2005 they bought pandemic insurance. They've been paying some huge premium each year since then (several million/year I think) so it made sense to cash in.

AO in January.

FO in May/June.

W in June/July.

That's the 3rd slam then...

Unless we use September as the starting point of a tennis season...
Thought you were talking ranking wise.

Plus, you use the insurance when there is a possibility of massive risk, and in the case of WC if it were to be held, it would have been extremely risky.

That's the accountant's logic. I am not interested in that logic.

I'd rather they took care of the sport, as a fan. I don't give three rat's hineys about their profits.

Besides, they have so much money they could probably afford to hold 5 Wimbys with no crowds.

They can still. Instead of having tour end final, they can just hold indoor Wimbledon. Have a glass transparent roof to let the sunshine in so that grass can grow

Even though you're joking, a November Wimby is better than nothing. Get fake grass.

Problem is, how do you accommodate 128 1st round singles matches? Men and women.

64 2nd round...

There's only what... one or two roofs?

No, it is a safety issue. Also a marketing strategy. Would look terrible if they played Wimbledon when essentially very few events were taking place, and the last one turned into a fiasco. That would have been very idiotic if they held the WC during that time frame. Not just for the sport, athletes, profits, and image, but for the future of the tennis season. If WC pulled the trigger too early and started with a massive failure, there is a likely chance that the other tourneys never happen.

Should have held it. They allowed black lives matters riots all over London so they could have held wimbledon.

And if that's true, it makes sense for some other country to take over the 3rd slam...

Easy fix is hold Wimbledon this year in australia. They have ton of grass courts there. Then after wimbledon players can just stay there and hang out til aussie open in january. This could be very conveinient for the players

Correct. If they didn't have that crazy insurance clause, I'm guessing they would have tried to hold the event in some capacity to recoup losses.

No. It was the right idea to cancel. You can't reschedule Wimbledon to later in the year because of the grass courts. And it was too early in the pandemic in the UK, before people started figuring out how to hold sporting events safely. It wouldn't have worked out.

No and the USO and the FO should not have been held either.

What the FO open pulled with the unilateral reschedule was not cool either.

More unfairity.

Hold two Wimbys next year back to back
KInd of like Wimbledon+London Olympics in 2012 back to back.

Problem is there's also the Tokyo Olympics in the tennis calendar next year. The London Olympics was best of 3 set matches and only 6 rounds too so that was a much shorter tournament than a Grand Slam .

I wonder how much was it the indemnity paid by the Wimbledon insurers this year.

dumb talk about 49, but if he had continued, trained hard, and added the new racket and strings for 2003 and onward the 130 mph serves he was hitting in his last match on tour would be mid 140's...the forehand would be even more massive

and, was Courier a good baseliner?... Agassi, Chang, Wilander?

They should have held Wimbledon with special measures, like they did in New York. It was perfectly doable.

It's the French Open that should have been cancelled: you cannot count on the French to implement rational directives: even if it got hold later in the year, i'm sure it will lead to massive contamination outbreaks and millions- if not billions- in COVID deaths later on.

They cancelled the wrong slam.

It kinda sucks that Wimbledon is the only slam that was cancelled this year. RG should have been cancelled as well, but French organizers acted sneaky and postponed the tournament without asking anyone. Only two hard court grand slams should have been played this year to be fair to all players. It was a huge disadvantage for Djokovic and to a very lesser extent for Federer (I know he is old and injured but still) and major advantage for Nadal to cancel Wimbledon and play RG. Nadal fans complaining about conditions this year before the tournament began conveniently ignore that the tournament being played under this year's conditions was extremely fortunate for him.

The unevenness of the schedule and the cancellations is one of the reasons why YE #1 should not be awarded this year.
