Slam winner or n°1 players defeated

I haven't this problem with the remote but I used to find my cellphone there, especially after drunkenly texting evil ex girlfriends...
I hope you never put your cell phone in with your food and cook it. That would be an interesting new recipe.

I like the term Evil Ex Girlfriends. Almost sounds like a new Superhero and Supervillain movie.

That's the other thread. This thread is about GOAT defeating slam winners (as in major winners) or former n°1. It all started when Dann Lobb pointed out that Connors defeated a number of Amateur slam champions that I didn't count in the original thread, considering that the Amateur of the 60's were not the best players in the world (but they were at the time of Tilden).
I think we're getting all these threads confused. :) Understandable since quite often the topics seems to be the same.

I wanted to check the number of different slam winners or n°1 (at any point) defeated by all time greats...

Agassi: Sampras, Lendl, Cash, Noah, McEnroe, Wilanders, Connors, Courier, Becker, Edberg, Chang, Stitch, Gomez, Ivanisevic, Moya, Muster, Bruguera, Kuerten, Kafelnikov, Korda, Rios, Rafter, Krajicek, Roddick, Hewitt, Safin, Johansson, Gaudio, Federer. 29 players.

Connors (that I know). Gonzalez, Olmedo, Rosewall, Newcombe, Laver, Nastase, Orantes, Gimeno, Kodes, Borg, McEnroe, Panatta, Ashe, Smith, Tanner, Gerulaitis, Vilas, Kriek, Edmondson, Teacher, Noah, Agassi, Cash, Edberg, Chang, Gomez, Lendl, Bruguera, Stitch. 29 players.

Sticking to just Open era champions and #1s - I'd think the leader would be either Connors or Agassi

Looked it up

Jimmy Connors - 26 (Rosewall, Laver, Ashe, Kodes, Newcombe, Smith, Gimeno, Nastase, Borg, Orantes, Edmonson, Panatta, Tanner, Vilas, Gerulaitis, McEnroe, Teacher, Kriek, Noah, Lendl, Edberg, Cash, Gomez, Stich, Bruguera & Korda).

He played 32 in total - those he never beat 6 (Wilander, Becker, Chang, Sampras, Courier & Agassi)

Andre Agassi - 32 (Connors, McEnroe, Kriek, Wilander, Noah, Lendl, Becker, Edberg, Cash, Chang, Gomez, Sampras, Courier, Stich, Bruguera, Muster, Kafelnikov, Krajicek, Kuerten, Rafter, Korda, Moya, Safin, Ivanisevic, Hewitt, T. Johansson, A. Costa, Ferrero, Federer, Roddick, Gaudio & Rios)

He played 33 in total - those he never beat 1(Nadal)

Note - in the Open Era, there has to date been 54 Slam champions and 1 World #1 who never won a Slam

There was one guy I was curious about, so I checked him out too. Results are not disappointing

Fabrice Santoro has played 37 (Connors, Kriek, Wilander, Noah, Lendl, Becker, Edberg, Chang, Gomez, Sampras, Courier, Stich, Agassi, Bruguera, Muster, Kafeklnkov, Krajicek, Kuerten, Rafter, Korda, Moya, Safin, Ivanisevic, Hewitt, Johansson, Costa, Ferrero, Federer, Roddick, Gaudio, Nadal, Djokovic, del Potro, Murray, Wawrinka, Cilic & Rios) of the possible 55

Some he doesn't have wins against, but his win loss record isn't too bad (didn't play most of them too often)

Chronologically, he's played every Slam champion since Johan Kriek (who won his maiden title in 1981), bar one (Pat Cash) upto the present!!!:eek::eek:

Then which major tournament with the very best player of his time did Emerson win?

And thanks for Vines. I'm not very clear on thus era and exactly when the pro tour started to be clearly better than the amateur one.
IMO, the peak pro tour was from 1958-66. 58-62 had peak Gonzalez, Segura, Hoad, peak Rosewall. 63-66: Near peak Gonzalez, Peak Rosewall and Laver. 50-54: Old Kramer, Riggs, Budge VS Peak Gonzalez, Segura. Emerson, had he joined the pro tour probably could have won a pro slam or more, assuming his game improved a bit.

Nor Michael Chang?

Nice catch

Chang's there too, editing it in - thanks, and apologies for posting false information to all

That makes 37 out of 55 - probably no one's played more Slam champions/World #1s.

He won matches against all but 7 of them (Kriek, Lendl, Kafelnikov, Nadal, del Potro, Murray and Cilic) ... so 30 guys defeated, just shy of Agassi and probably more than anyone else

Some interesting head-to-heads for Santoro

- 3-4 vs Sampras
- 3-3 vs Agassi
- 4-3 vs Muster
- 7-2 vs Safin
- 3-5 Ivanisevic
- 2-3 Hewitt

Notably bad head-to-heads for him

- 2-7 Stich
- 0-6 Kafelnikov
- 3-6 Johansson
- 2-6 Ferrero
- 2-9 Federer

Overall Head-to-Head 62-95

Not bad for a guy with career high ranking of 17 and best result at a Slam of 1 quarter final
