Some groundies (video)

Here is a little practice session which was all groundstrokes in the heat of Texas, so I didn't stay out long. Will get some volleys and serves up tomorrow. Will also try to get some different angles if I can find a place to put my flip recorder.

New video from today. We got a little bit of everything today. When I was hitting I tried to fix the forehand, so let me know how it looks.

I agree, you have a nice looking backhand. It looks like it is more solid than your forehand. From a distance it looks like you have a tendency to sometimes arm the ball more on the forehand side without rotating the body. But either way, the shots still looks effective.

Is this the Flip Mino camera you are using? I was thinking of getting one. Your video is pretty decent quality.

totally agree here, FH is total arm, the hips trail the stroke looks quite inefficient

the backhand is however very good, totally controlled and balanced, the lack of body movt helps on this wing

Yeah, I will fix the forehand today. I know what I need to do to fix it, so I will put some forehands in my video today along with the volleys and serves. Thanks guys.

This is just the original Flip Video, I think they have the Flip Mini and something else. They work well for stuff like this.

You hit good.
Your movement is stiff and lacking.
As said, your forehand is off, and one day won't fix it.
You have problems getting consistent depth on your backhand, which is better than your forehand.
As so, 3.5 to 4.0 tournament, you'd get your forehand picked on, and you're not consistent enough for real mid level 4.5's.

Pretty strokes, but mistakes on forehand with mild hitting. Weak slice. Don't see a lot of angles. I'd like to see your serve first, but I'll echo fruitytennis1.

Strong 4.0, weak 4.5.

You have a pretty backhand and a good foundation. You make some mistakes on positioning your body. Sometimes you don't give yourself enough time.

Just to let everybody know, I was hitting with my mom so I wasn't trying to blast the ball at her and run her around, that would be mean. New video up with serves and volleys so you can see the rest of my game.

Again, the NTRP rating applies to the actual match played which could be completely different than the "practice" play.
IF you play your official matches the same way as in this video, I would say you're 4.5 (or higher if you move exceptionally fine).
Serve looks nice - great toss, motion, racket speed...
FH is consistent and nice.
BH is the least impressive shot that I have seen in the videos. Looks like a weak shot?
Nice volleys/overheads, too

So, what is your NTRP rating?

Yeah, its always hard to video tape matches, especially with my Flip. I will be playing in a tournament in September and will see what I can record. I go for a lot more on my forehand to open up the court but my backhand is very consistent. My serve, first and second, is probably my best shot.

you mentioned you were already ranked - what level is it? (or you're still playing the game here? ;))

I'd say (from what I saw) that you're playing very close to me...or should I say I am playing close level to you...

Your mom is a very good hitting partner btw.
I think you are very solid in all areas, definitely seems like you've been playing for a while. I'm not very familiar with the NTRP, but probably 4.0 and above..
BTW, don't know about the song choice for a hitting session with ur mom..... (jk)

That is super that your second serve is one of your better shots.

I thought your balance looked much better on your volleys than it did on your ground strokes. I think a more balanced and stable hitting platform will fix most of your consistency problems off both wings.

Ok. about time we have someone who has a 1hbh, love it! but it looks compact, not any real extension on it when you hit it full. the BH slice is ok. but it is a pleasure to watch. forehand looks strong. nice footwork i might add as well.
very strong game. 4.5-5.0...

Just saw your other video, forget what i said about the full hit 1HBH. it is a joy to watch. thanks

Hmmmm strong 4.0-mid 4.5 without seeing match play. On what u could do better, the FH even in the 2nd vid is mostly arm. Shoulder rotation on the FH is ok (could load up a little more) but u could keep ur off hand and left shoulder turned slightly longer. Doin this will give u a cleaner, steadier, and more powerful shot. Perfect example of the shoulder turn and uncoiling is Murray, watch his hd vids. And the other thing that i saw was ur using a predominantly closed stance on the FH wing. A closed stance makes it quite hard to use ur legs and hips in ur shots (i.e. rotating the hips.) If u can, switch to an open stance. Learn to rotate heavily and u will b rewarded with a heavier, more penetrating shot (not to mention more control and less fatigue in the arm and shoulder.) Rotating fully is hard to get down, took me 30 days of my coach yellin and gettin on my case to get it into a habit, but it pays off. Now the BH is pretty nice, the only thing i see that could b done is to step into the shot rather then steppin accross ur body. That is really minor but i noticed an increase in depth and placement control when i started doin it, so i think its worth it. Vollies r nice and serve looks solid.

Yeah, I love watching anybody with a nice 1hbh, although not many people use a 1hbh and if they do its mainly a slice. Thanks for the comments man.

Well, most of the time I play out of Memorial Park or Lee Leclear, but you have to pay some court fees for both. I also have some friends that are strong players that I hit with at courts around my area.

Thanks a lot man. I play tons of doubles so my net game is pretty strong. Like USERNAME said, its from the Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star movie. Change up the N and F.

Yeah, I am trying get the forehand down by my next tournament. About the closed stance, 90% of the time during matches I use an open stance. I will be hitting with a 5.0+ player this week and he hits the **** out of the ball so I will be going all out, and will most likely post that video. Thanks for the tips.

nice strokes, maybe you're trying to be nice to your hitting partner but the forehand doesn't seem very forceful. Anyways people are always trying to label others with an ntrp rating and put to much weight in it.

These are the only ingredients that matter in a match. A good 2nd serve, ability to attack a short ball, good service return, and the abiility to not offer up the short ball yourself. Honestly that is it.

Some small comments:

Your backhand volley and backhand slice are too "choppy" - you would get a better result and more consistency by thinking of finishing out with a more vertical swing path and not down - this is one of the reasons that your slice backhand is floats

On the volleys, bend your knees and try to keep the racquet head above the handle. You do a lot of low volleys by dropping the racquet head, which will send back a floater. If I see that playing doubles, I would poach and hammer that shot every time.

Thats good, hittin with 5.0+ players is great practice. I play alot with players from the d1 and d2 squads near me, its good to play the higher lvl people cause thats all ull c in college.

Yeah, it helps me out a lot. I just played against a guy that played D1 tennis at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, his name is Javier Bacaicoa. It was a good match but guys like that are on just a whole other lever. Here is a vid of him hitting with someone you may of heard of...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojmH6drYFKA
