speed up kick serve swing

I have a kick serve but I would like it to kick more and heavier. I realize that I need a faster swing for more spin. How does one train for faster head speed on a kick serve?

Here is a Brad Gilbert drill to help build speed...

Assume your normal serving position but, rather than positioning the racquet in front of you, start the racquet in the "L" position (pre back scratch). Toss the ball as you normally do, then drop the racquet to a full back-scratch position and proceed with the hit.

I know it seems counterintuitive that eliminating the take-away and starting in the "L" position will demand that you increase racquet speed in order to make correct contact with the ball, but it really does work this way (probably due to the elimination of the initial momentum).

Hope this helps.

There is an adage in baseball that if you want to throw hard, you need to throw hard a lot to build up arm strength. Likewise, if you want to develop racquet headspeed, you need to swing hard and fast. The downside is that you will like play poorly if you are always trying to swing hard at serves.

Tennisaddict1,

I would work on coordinating your toss and unwinding all the stored energy you have which will translate that energy into racquet head speed. What do I mean? Your service motion is like little like a golf swing. You have a slow takeaway and slowly coordinate your hips and upper body unwinding to give you maximum club head speed with as much efficiency as possible. The key to take away from this is you are building a momentum chain to explode into the ball.

The theory is the same on your tennis serve. Your deep knee bend, your shoulder turn, your toss hand high, as you start up and uncoiling the stored energy in your legs and shoulders; your toss arm comes down and you explode UP into the ball and accelerate through contact. Try to coordinate your explosion into the ball to transfer maximum energy into the ball at contact. It will take time to master this.

Take a few lessons or watch a local college team serve to better understand what I mean by exploding up into the ball.

Good luck
