Stan Wawrinka about playing Djokovic at Wimbledon 2023: "I don't really stand a chance"

Q. Now you face Novak.

STAN WAWRINKA: There's zero opportunity to win Wimbledon for me, I think. I'm happy to have won today again. I think it was great match. I'm playing better each match, and as I say, I think it's an honor to play Novak here. I was missing that on my career to play him in the Grand Slam in Wimbledon. That's the last I never played him, and it's going to be a difficult challenge.

Hopefully I can make a competitive match, but if you will look at recent results, I don't really stand a chance.
Q. Can you beat him?

STAN WAWRINKA: I don't know (smiling). I have to be on the court, play my best tennis and like I did in the past, but right now it's been a long time I didn't play at that level.

So it's going to be interesting. Hopefully, as I say, I can make a competitive match and I can be there to have a fight. But if you look at recent results, it's going to be difficult.

Djokovic is more likely to get injured than Wawrinka is, that's the wildcard.

Yeah but Djokovic's injuries are different, they usually give his game a boost.
Well it will be interesting to see how Djokovic's injuries go now that he's 36.
We could see Djokovic wheeled off the court.

He had a 3 cm hamstring tear at AO and a "long list of injuries" at RG and I'm sure you'll agree that those 2 tournaments went very well for him, right ?

Wawrinka should pray that Djokovic is healthy, if he's injured then Wawrinka stands an even lesser chance to win.

Wow he even takes it to his twitter.

I still remember after Djokos retirement in USO he posted a smiley or laughing emoji on twitter right after. I really hope Djokovic destroys him for these mind games he is trying to pull off.
He remembered that Djokovic already tried his BS possum injury fakery at their 2016 USO final I bet winning against him in New York once again 3 years later was awesome too.

@topic. Lol at nole fans trying to hype up today's match. Stan always sucked on grass, let alone in 2023. But sure with the draws that Djokovic has been having in the last couple of years every big name is a cool bonus right? Wawrinka looks better on paper that let's say Rublev or Paul who cares that it is 2023. I'm sure winning against metal hip Murray would be something to brag about also, he's yet to beat him on grass.

Even challenger level players don't come into a match with this mentality nevermind 3 Slam champs. Clearly, he doesn't believe this.

Check his twitter as well lol. Dude can't help himself.
I saw your thread and I didn't believe him yesterday either when I saw his interview on Tennis Channel. He has beaten Djokovic multiple times in Slams and he doesn't believe Wawrinka doesn't have a chance.

Check Stans statements and twitter. He is hyping this match himself.

The idea behind this is very clear, put the seed in Djokovic's head that the match is given so he doesn't quite have the focus he needs against someone who has always been a threat to him in slams. I am sure there is a part of Stan who understands that on this surface and with the way they are in their careers, Novak is the fav, but that doesn't mean he doesn't feel he cannot be the disrupter here.

Lmao at the Djokovic fans pissing themselves over 38 yr old Stan
I am more afraid of Stan and Murray than the young guys.
Main difference between Novak and the rest of the field is that Novak's team is not letting him read the TTW and Twitter. I hope.

Let me put it this way, if Novak loses to Stan then he wasn't going to win the tournament anyway

So weird, The Stanimal throwing in the towel before the match even began?

I don’t think it was mindgames either, I genuinely think he went into the match thinking he had zero shot, the first two sets indicate that, and the choke in the 3rd set breaker does too.

I think if he believed more he could’ve done some damage. Djokovic is petrified of Wawrinka at slams.

There is Nothing to believe— he couldn’t get to balls, his serve was all out of sorts, and to be honest, Djokovic didn’t really play all that well in the third set for to go to a tiebreaker. These two could play 100 sets, and Stan might win like five of them. He had absolutely no chance in the betting odds indicated this.

lmaoo true, but to be fair to them, Stan is at his peak right now because he’s had all this extra time to practice and has all this extra experience. Is a fighter jet pilot at his best after one year or after 30 years? I think that’s the analogy that was used wasn’t it?
