Stats for 1980 Basel Final: Lendl - Borg

Fourth title in career of Lendl, at the time he considered it as the biggest one. He had admittedly defeated Borg in the Toronto final a few months before, but it happened when Borg retired despite the ’6-4 4-5′ lead.

My stats:

First set

- Lendl made 2 aces, 3 unreturned serves and 1 double fault. Borg made 3 aces and 5 unreturned serves.

- Points won on 1st serves: Lendl won 7/12 (58%) and won 1 service game at love. Borg won 11/21 (52%).

- Points won on 2nd serves: Lendl won 11/16 (69%). Borg won 3/8 (38%).

- Lendl made 9 winners apart from service (4 forehands, 1 forehand volley, 3 backhand passing shots, 1 backhand volley) and 8 errors (2 forehands, 4 backhands, 1 volley and 1 drop shot).

- Borg made 7 winners apart from service (1 forehand volley, 4 backhand volleys, 2 overheads) and 19 errors (11 forehands, 7 backhands and 1 volley).

- Lendl converted 4/5 break points, Borg converted 1/1 break point. Borg broke Lendl in the 1st game, Lendl scored a good passing shot and a forehand winner on Borg's serve, Borg made 2 UE errors and Lendl broke back. In the sixth game, on Borg's serve he led 40-0, and then made 3 consecutive errors, all from the forehand side include a forehand volley and eventually gave Lendl a chance to break him. After 2 long deuces, Borg hit 2 consecutive unreturned serves. Then in the seventh game, Lendl won his service game at love, very comfortably. Borg, again on his serve led 40-15, made a backhand error (Lendl hit a very heavy forehand to Borg's backhand), and Lendl scored 2 excellent backhand passing shot winners, another Borg's backhand error gave Lendl a break and then Lendl went to win the 1st set, again had a comfortable service game with a lot of Borg's errors from both wings.

Borg's baseline game was very poor in the first set. Lendl took the first set with 6-3 win.

**

Second set:

- Lendl had 1 ace and 6 unreturned serves. Borg had 1 ace, 2 unreturned serves and 2 double faults.

- Points won on 1st serves: Lendl won 12/15 (80%) and won 1 service game at love. Borg won 9/16 (56%)

- Points won on 2nd serves: Lendl won 6/10 (60%) and Borg won 4/10 (40%).

- Lendl made 8 winners apart from service (2 forehands, 2 forehand volleys, 1 backhand volley, 1 forehand passing shot, 1 backhand passing shot, 1 backhand lob) and 11 errors (4 forehands, 6 backhands and 1 volley).

- Borg had 6 clean winners (1 backhand return, 2 forehand passing shots, 1 backhand passing shot, 1 forehand volley, 1 backhand volley) and 14 errors (8 forehands, 4 backhands and 2 volleys).

Break point conversions: Lendl converted 2/3 break points. Borg only had 1 break point in the second game and failed to convert it because of a forced error, which came from Lendl's forehand. Lendl put a lot of pressure on Borg's backhand and went to win the game with Borg 2 consecutive backhand errors. From the fifth game, Borg's level dropped, especially his 2nd serve. Lendl's serve and his game were on fire. He made 2 unreturned serves in each games (4th, 6th and 8th game), Lendl won 4 points in a row on his serve in the 8th game. He won the set 6-2.

Third set

- Lendl had 3 aces, 8 unreturned serves and 2 double faults. Borg had 6 unreturned serves and 2 double faults.

- Borg won 18/24 (75%) points on first serves, and Lendl won 13/17 (76%) on his first serves. Borg still had poor second serve stats 8/18 (44%), Lendl won 8/19 (42%).

- Lendl hit 6 clean winners (3 forehands, 2 forehand returns and 1 backhand volley). Lendl made total 19 errors (11 forehands and 8 backhands).

- Borg hit 14 winners apart from service (5 forehands, 4 forehand volleys, 3 backhand volleys, 2 overheads) and made the same error number with Lendl (13 forehands and 6 backhands).

- Break points: Lendl converted 2/3 break points and Borg converted 2/6 break points. In the beginning of the third set, both players were incosistent, especially their forehand side, but Lendl's level was worse. Borg led a break but threw it away with a double fault in the third game. Again, in the 4th game, Lendl kept showing his inconsistency and Borg was up 0-40 on Lendl's serve, but threw it away with 3 forehand unforced errors, then Lendl scored two good serve to win the game. Borg raised his level a bit, hit with much more top spin and tried to keep his cool in key moments (although he did blow a lot of chances) while Lendl really had some big chokes in this set. Borg escaped the defeated in straight set with 7-5 victory in the third.

****

Fourth set

- Lendl only had 1 unreturned serve. Borg had 2 aces and hit 6 unreturned serves.

- Borg won the highest perfectage points on first and second serve in this match with 10/11 (91%) and 2/3 (67%). Lendl won only 7/18 (39%) points on first serve and didn't won any point on his second serve (0/3).

- Lendl made 7 winners apart from service (3 forehands, 1 forehand passing shot, 2 forehand volleys, 1 forehand drop shot) and 13 errors (4 forehands, 5 backhands, 2 volleys and 2 drop shots).

- Borg made 5 clean winners (2 backhands, 2 forehand returns, 1 forehand volley) and only had 1 volley error.

- Borg converted 4/5 break points and Lendl didn't have any chances on Borg's serve in the set.

Borg started the set with one service game at love and played high level throughout the set. Lendl, was saddled as a choker, still not recover from the loss in the third set, made a lot of errors. In the sixth game there were some amazing winners from both, but Borg was clearly much better player in this set, and he bagelled Lendl 6-0. Borg started strong and finished strong.

*****

Fifth set

- Lendl hit 2 aces and 2 unreturned serves. Borg hit 5 aces, 3 unreturned serves and 2 double faults.

- Borg won 11/19 (58%) points on first serves and 8/16 (50%) points on second serves. Lendl on the other hand won 9/10 (90%) points on his first serves and 9/15 (60%) points on second serves. Borg didn't have a chance to break Lendl's first serve until the 8th game. Lendl won 3 service game at love in this set.

- Lendl's 11 winners apart from service (7 forehands, 1 backhand, 1 forehand passing shot, 1 backhand passing shot, 1 overhead) and made 13 errors (7 forehands, 4 backhands, 1 volley and 1 overhead).

- Borg's 5 winners apart from service (2 forehand, 1 backhand, 1 forehand volley, 1 backhand volley) and made 17 errors (10 forehands, 4 backhands, 2 volleys and 1 lob).

- Lendl converted 2/6 and Borg converted 2/3 break points. Lendl seemed to find his rhythm back, quickly broke Borg with a lot of powerful winners in the first two games. Lendl held serve until 4th game, when he saved one break point with a forehand winner. Borg finally broke back in the 8th game, but again, his errors caused him the match, Lendl broke Borg in the 9th game and served for the match. He made 4 consecutive points won in the last game of the match, the match ended with Borg's forehand return error. Lendl won 6-4 in the fifth.

interesting stats, thanks for posting.

just added up some of your stats.

Lendl had 41 non service winners(25 fh, 7, bh, 5 fhv, 3 bhv, 1 ov)
Borg had 37(11 fh, 5 bh, 8 fhv, 9 bhv, 4 ov)

the '81 RG final had a similar ratio with Lendl having 22 of his 35 winners off the fh http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=196650

Borg outaced Lendl in both matches

I did stats for the '80 Masters final will try to post that.

Thanks, Moose. I think krosero did the '80 Masters final stats before. l'm looking to your stats, Moose. Borg clearly played much better in the YEC Final. He was more aggressive and didn't let Lendl pound his powerful forehand like the Basel Final. Both were up and down the whole match but Lendl was better player in the fifth.

I had some time on my hands and was looking for some old videos of Lendl. This video is pretty good quality, with Lendl hitting solid topspin backhands and lethal forehands. Lendl went with a high percentage of topspin backhands against Borg, instead of his trusty slice. This was almost a year before they met in the Roland Garros final.
