Fourth title in career of Lendl, at the time he considered it as the biggest one. He had admittedly defeated Borg in the Toronto final a few months before, but it happened when Borg retired despite the ’6-4 4-5′ lead.
My stats:
First set
- Lendl made 2 aces, 3 unreturned serves and 1 double fault. Borg made 3 aces and 5 unreturned serves.
- Points won on 1st serves: Lendl won 7/12 (58%) and won 1 service game at love. Borg won 11/21 (52%).
- Points won on 2nd serves: Lendl won 11/16 (69%). Borg won 3/8 (38%).
- Lendl made 9 winners apart from service (4 forehands, 1 forehand volley, 3 backhand passing shots, 1 backhand volley) and 8 errors (2 forehands, 4 backhands, 1 volley and 1 drop shot).

Borg, again on his serve led 40-15, made a backhand error (Lendl hit a very heavy forehand to Borg's backhand), and Lendl scored 2 excellent backhand passing shot winners, another Borg's backhand error gave Lendl a break and then Lendl went to win the 1st set, again had a comfortable service game with a lot of Borg's errors from both wings.
Borg's baseline game was very poor in the first set. Lendl took the first set with 6-3 win.

In the beginning of the third set, both players were incosistent, especially their forehand side, but Lendl's level was worse. Borg led a break but threw it away with a double fault in the third game. Again, in the 4th game, Lendl kept showing his inconsistency and Borg was up 0-40 on Lendl's serve, but threw it away with 3 forehand unforced errors, then Lendl scored two good serve to win the game. Borg raised his level a bit, hit with much more top spin and tried to keep his cool in key moments (although he did blow a lot of chances) while Lendl really had some big chokes in this set. Borg escaped the defeated in straight set with 7-5 victory in the third.

In the sixth game there were some amazing winners from both, but Borg was clearly much better player in this set, and he bagelled Lendl 6-0. Borg started strong and finished strong.

Borg finally broke back in the 8th game, but again, his errors caused him the match, Lendl broke Borg in the 9th game and served for the match. He made 4 consecutive points won in the last game of the match, the match ended with Borg's forehand return error. Lendl won 6-4 in the fifth.

Borg, unbeaten in 13 consecutive five-setters, lost second 5-set match within two tournaments (previously at the US Open Final to Mac). A few months afterwards, Borg took his revenge crushing Lendl 6-4 6-2 6-2 at the Madison Square Garden (Masters ’80).
