How is Kirschbaum syn for durability?
Average... but it's my favorite syn. gut (SG) under the sun. Although I string at home and durability with any string isn't really a high priority for me, the service life I get with this string is fine.
Feel is a subjective issue, but the combo of plushness with enough of a connected feel that I get with this string suits me just right. I'll drop tension by 4-5 lbs. when I have to play outdoors in the cold, but I can tension the 16 ga. at 57-58 lbs. (in my 98" Volkls with 16x19 patterns) in the warmer months and it's still soft enough for me to slug with it every day.
I haven't seen any 17 ga. SG from Kirschbaum lately, so I'm keeping a reel of Babolat 17 handy for when I need a thinner SG. In fact, I just picked up a pair of 18x20 Dunlop CX-200's from a TT seller and my Babolat 17 will go into those for my first trials. There might be some K-baum 17 available from sources in Europe, but I generally just order from sources 'round here.
-tecnifiber use to have the most buttery syn.gut arround,(SOFTest) LONG time ago
I think that I found Kirschbaum's SG after my supply of Tecnifibre dried up, but I used to love that Tecnifibre SG, too. The Kirschbaum SG turned out to have that same buttery soft personality and I loved it, but then that stuff disappeared, too
I decided to have another go with T-fibre SG when new reels showed up at an online store, but the new version of the T-fibre SG was awful - much more clunky and harsh than their string from several years ago. I might have thrown away most of that reel after it turned out to be so much worse than the original stuff.
While Forten Sweet is a little too soft for me, the K-baum SG is fine. I just wish I could get more of the 17 ga. version.
Opinions vary, but I can say that I've found Gosen OG Sheep Micro to play significantly more stiff than other syn. guts, including Kirschbaum. The 16 ga. OGSM is rather durable and seems to hold up fine as a cross in a simple poly hybrid, but it's too stiff for me to use in my own frames, even if I drop tension by a few lbs. The 17 ga. version can sometimes work for me, but I need to tension it a few lbs. lower than a softer option of the same gauge. That's just me.
