T2000 and gut strings

I just got an email from a guy with a T2000 who offered to pay me $50 to string up a T2000 with gut strings that he will provide. I've only strung up my own T2000 once and between figuring out how to mount it and then following that insane pattern it took me at least three hours.

I figure with gut I'd have to tube it everywhere? The money is not important to me but I kind of like the challenge. Only thing is I don't have much hair left and don't want to rip out what little there still is.

What do you experts say?

Back in late 60's early 70's I strung a great deal of those T 2000 racquets, as at that time it was a very popular racquet. With synthetic strings, I could string those racquets one after another, no issues.
Simple racquet to string once you do a number of them.

One time I got a player that asked for natural gut on one of those strung at mid 60 lb range . You have to tube the string around every loop as well as being so careful. Was not worth the effort. From that time on , I refused to string gut on T 2000 racquets. That was a long long time ago, and if someone asked for that again , my answer would still be no.
You asked for opinions, so you have mine. Some things are just not worth it.

Also be sure that you have a good piece of leather to drape over the frame where the string pulls over or you will be supplying him with a set of your own gut once you snap it, as a synthetic string can take it, but not gut , especially if he wants a high tension, so be sure that you have an extra set of that same gut in your inventory. Nat gut at high tensions with that racquet, you are asking for problems. Just my opinion, but with some posters here they will probably tell you to go for it, but to be honest, you are best to stay away from that job in my opinion.

If I was going to string it I would tube it everywhere. But I can’t string one on my Star 5. You did say the client is supplying the string and paying you $50 to string a racket you are not familiar with. What if the string breaks?

I would try to string it on my X-2 for less than $50 but I’d practice with a cheap SG first. If I thought it were possible I’d use the gut string.

Sage advice from both Jim e and Irvin. Back in the day, I strung dozens and dozens of T-2000s. But today, even with that experience, if I were to undertake your project, I would at least do one practice round with some SG. Then when using the gut, I would definitely tube every single string. Good luck.

@Injured Again I've strung T2000's as well. I am friendly with a guy who strung for Connors at some tournaments. He was the "new guy" and the more senior stringers always offered him up. Connors used to walk in and ask "Who is my b!tch this week?". Long story short, Connors frames were tubed everywhere. Hope this helps. If you need the Wilson docs for the pattern, holler at me.

This video shows the stringer placing the string through the loops then tensioning.
Tension should be applied to the string before inserting the string through the crown loops. Wilson specific instructions. Do what this stringer did with natural gut and most likely will snap fast. It is even tough on gut to pull over that frame, that is why some padding is necessary to protect nat gut when pulling over frame.
Just the way this stringer tensions the string after he insert through the loops , with all that additional friction will effect the final tension as well as place more stress on string. He may get away with that with a synthetic string, but not with gut.
Not all videos shows proper technique.

Back years ago, the T 2000 was a common racquet to find stringer errors on, as many just thought that they knew how to string it, while making mistakes.

When I saw T2000, I thought it would be some modern state of the art type stick. But alas, it looks like an egg.
I want to hire the guy who recently restored "The potato of palencia" as I need to restore one old machine.

Banned yes, but the core of one of the more interesting footnotes in tennis history. The Mike Fishbach story was interesting but Nastase ending Vilas’ streak with a pasta paddle was a travesty.

To everyone, thanks for your sage advice. I'm going to decline. The word apparently is that he can't find anyone willing to give it a try so it eventually fell down the list to me. He wanted the gut strings at 55 pounds.

I did my one and only string job with a stash of super old and super thick blue spiral synthetic gut and used 45 pounds. I did a lot of things that I'm sure gut would not tolerate but I was pretty much focused on getting the pattern correct and not so much how compassionate I was to the string.
