There's been 2 guys I would look at in history.

MaliVai Washington & Filip Dewulf.

Washington had only made 1 Slam Quarter 2 years before his Finals run at 1996 Wimbledon. His previous appearances at Wimbledon were 3 first round exists and 3 second round exists, including back to back 1st exits prior to 96. Although he also made 93 Miami Final and 95 Stuttgart final. Still, his magical run could not be understated and he did have some luck on his way. He faced no seeds until the SF and needed 5 sets to overcome another miracle QFist before a pretty big choke-job from Todd Martin in the semi.

Dewulf is an interesting tale because the guy had to play qualifiers to make the 97 French Open draw. He made it all the way to the SF and even won a set off eventual champ Kuerten. He followed that up with a QF the following year and didn't make another FO although I'm not sure why he wasn't given entry in 99 as his ranking was Top 80 he failed in qualies that year.

For women it's Alexandra Stevenso who made 99 Wimbledon SF as a qualifier and never past the 2nd round of a Slam despite playing many more.

I've been really impressed with him, mostly because he has worked his way up and was not one of those guys who shot up through the rankings. I admit that his politics are distasteful to me and for awhile I was not a fan, but after seeing one of his press conferences at the AO I found him to be a hard working and humble guy. As far as where he goes from here, at the very least he should be inside the top 75 and have direct entry to more tournaments on a consistent basis. One thing is for sure, he fights harder than any of the other top American guys.
