Disagree in a two

Best actor - George Clooney
Best supporting actor - Christopher Waltzes
Best actress - Meryl Streep
Best supporting actress - Mo'Nique
Best director - Kathryn Bigelow
Best picture - Avatar

Christopher Waltz is definitely winning best supporting actor.

I think Avatar is going to win best picture, with Bigelow getting the best director, mainly because the academy is trying to change itself a lil.

I also liked Clooney more than Bridges.

My Predictions

Best Actor- George Clooney or Morgan Freeman (both were great, to close for me to pick just one)

Best Supporting Actor- Christoph Waltz (although I did not see the last station so I cannot comment on Plummer)

Best Actress- Sandra Bullock or Meryl Streep (I want Sidibe to win, but she hasn't won anything big so far so I doubt she gets the oscar)

Best Supporting Actress- Mo'Nique (those girls from Up in The Air were good...but Mo'Nique just blew it out of the water in Precious)

Best Director- For some reason I want to say Tarantino, but Bigelow would be a nice break from the usual oscar tradition.

Best Picture- Absolutely no clue, with 10 pictures this year all of which were good (the ones out of them I saw), its hard to tell. My picks would either Avatar (to much buzz to ignore it, although i don't think its bext picture quality), Precious, The Blind Side, Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, and look out for Up as a possible spoiler.

My sister (responding to a family-related invite get together) RSVP'd "no" because of the Academy Awards. I don't know if she was repeating a description of the event that she might've heard or if she made it up herself, but in any event I thought her description of it as essentially the "Chick's Superbowl" was kinda amusing.

D, you planned a get together the same night as the Oscars? That's like trying to plan a surprise birthday party the same day as a wedding. lol.

Everyone says Waltz will win and that he deserves it but I feel they will award Plummer, not only because of his performance but his career. If Bigelow wins, it will be the first time a woman has won Best Director (which is long overdue). Cameron and his "I'm the king of the world" is just an ass.

I've been a big fan of Jeff Bridges since the The Fisher King. He is an awesome actor but hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves. Like Phillip Seymour Hoffman until he got it for Capote. I haven't seen a better performance from an actor than Waltz in IB in a long time.

Crazily enough, I agree with all of those.

Although I would LOVE to see District 9 winning for Best Picture, but we all know that's not going to happen.

You have good instincts Andres. ;) Waltz is still niggling at the back of my mind but I've been informed it's too late to change it so I will continue with Plummer (my initial choice).

I don't know why, but District 9 really disturbed me. Maybe too heavy on the Orwellian theme and WWII concentration camps. Good story though.

I saw Julie and Julia and don't consider Streep's performance to be great. As I was writing this, I realized that there ought to be a distinction between "great" and "Oscar-worthy" because they are not the same thing. The whole film had Nora Ephron's cloying sweetness to it, as if a different version of Meg Ryan were playing all the female characters.

I may be in the minority here because, as Streep seems to become more and more mannered and artificial in her performances, the academy seems to like her more and more.

Like CC said, District 9 disturbed me a lot too.

Among the best picture nominees, I've only seen Avatar, and even though I enjoyed it, it could not hold a candle to (say) Lord of the Rings.

Firth
Waltz
Bullock (hopefully I'm wrong about this)

Best picture is really tough for me. I liked them all except Hurt Locker and Blind Side. Don't see them giving it to the Coens again. Even though UP! was fantastic I don't think an animated film will win. I guess I'll go with Precious, but I'd be happy with any of the 8 I liked.

Not expecting to be right on many of these, I usually don't agree with Oscar picks.

"The Blind Side" has a non-impressive 69% approval on rotten tomatoes. Not very high for a movie nominated for "best movie".

The Oscars are pure bad taste guilty pleasure. I'll watch, but I'll also hate every minute of it.

Hopefully Steve and Alec will alleviate some of the pain.

Best actor - anybody but that mug Freeman.

Best sup actor - anyone but Damon

Actress - anyone but the awful Bullock; actually I'm sick and tired of Sidibe - a vote for her is a vote for Oprah is a vote for the devil

Sub actress - was up in the air really that good? Oscars have no standards anymore .. I've always liked Maggie.

Director - what an awful field .. Bigelow will probably get it - time for a lady to take it

Best Picture .. a serious man is the best film on this list

Anyone and anything from Inglourious Basterd deserves to win. Such a fantastic film because there is nothing like it.

CC, so far, all of our choices won, except Streep.
Now, The Hurt Locker for the big one, and I can go to sleep! :D

Avatar screwed itself. A run-of-the-mill scifi-fi screenplay wrapped in fascinating effects, glitzy but not much soul to it.

That is why I didn't watch it hehehe

If I watch animation, I watch animation of real stuff - like the Science channel programs on dinosaurs. I don't like animation which superimposes reality on fantasy. I would rather watch plain old human beings. That is why I have not watched any movie of the Lord of the Rings or the Harry Potter series. I have simply no interest in fantasy. Real science is much more interesting.

I agree. Avatar was visually beautiful but the story was ho hum, IMHO. I checked my watch a few times during the movie and after walking out, my wife and I both were saying "No way that's the movie of the year". Avatar won a few technical awards, which it should have. I haven't seen 'The Hurt Locker' but all my friends give it positive reviews. I thought 'Crazy Heart' was a much better movie than 'Avatar' and it was good to see Bridges get an Oscar. I just wish they would've shown Cameron's face when Hanks said "The Oscar goes to .... 'The Hurt Locker'. What a coup for Bigelow...wins an Oscar for best director, first woman to win best director, then wins best film...all at the expense of her ex-hubbie. :) Nice!

I'm so glad The Hurt Locker got best picture and best director. I was afraid they were going to give it to Avatar because of the zillion dollars its made. I liked Avatar, and the visual effects were spectacular. But The Hurt Locker was a much better movie. One of the best, if not THE best, war movies I've ever seen.

Congratulations to Jeff Bridges (man he's getting old). Blue seemed to be the color of choice for the ladies' dresses. Don't know why Sandra Bullock put a train on hers-totally ruined it. And Miley Cyrus-a teenager trying to look like a twentysomething year old? That's wrong!!!!

That Monique woman is way too fat.

No she isn't. She is a truly talented actress with a very high level of self esteem. She is healthy and happy and I feel is a great role model for those women out there under the extreme pressure to be 'Hollywood' perfect.

Perhaps you meant Gabourey Sidibe?

O man, you've really deprived yourself if you reject something based on some "ideology" you have. God know how many times i've seen LOTR ... and its high time i re-read the book, too.:)
