The "D" Word

"Deserves." NO!!!! Nobody deserves a title, a ranking, a win here or there! You win it or you don't. So tired of these threads about how this player or that actually "deserves" to have 5 more slams than he actually has, or "deserves" to have a higher ranking than he has, or didn't "deserve" to win a slam because Gulbis and Istomin weren't in the tournament. Nobody "deserves" anything!

One needs some amount of luck as well

How about that ?

"luck" might be your opponent getting injured and defaulting, but I don't think luck makes somebody "deserving"

Luck can come in several forms . You can have a weak draw , rivals who have your number may not get to play the event or taken out by another player on fire. It is also possible that your rival just had a bad, one off day.

So, result alone is not everything . There are intangibles both when someone wins or loses

Talent is luck too. Family circumstances which allow a career in tennis too.

Only things that deserve anything are hard work and sportsmanship.

Partially true. Some talent you are born with and some you develop. The ones you develop could be from sheet practice or great coaches or awesome facilities

Disagree.
There are plenty of people that inherently deserve better than whatever outcomes befall them.
The reality is, powers of media, charisma, church, money, power, or sheer dumb luck play a factor often.

There are clearly two senses of the word.

One conveys attribution of justice in a karmic sense. The other is an evaluation of strict cause and effect.

We understand both senses, and both have their place -

for example, when a burglar is finally caught after many sensational heists, we may say they 'deserve' the maximum sentence under the law, even though the evidence they're being prosecuted for strictly belongs to the case they were caught for.

On the other hand, say with a colleague at work who has been through a rough year personally, we may sympathize, but still say they only deserve a raise if they actually performed well on the job.

Agreed and one of the reasons I love tennis is because the deserving player always wins. In other sports you can argue there are lucky fluke outcomes, but excluding injuries, I really don't think there are any in tennis.

Relax, chief, I'm talking about tennis, not everything that can befall you in the journey of life.
