The Donald

I would like to see the Don think big and play the tour events as long as he can. He needs to get the mindset all year round of expecting himself to win events at the tour level. He has got the experience and the bank account to go all-in, all of the time.
The tour ranking system is tough on a player that experience an up and then down season. You may not qualify in the "bigger" tournament main draw where most of you ranking points are from if your ranking falls below the cut off. You then have to play qualifying round to see if you can get through to defend your last season's record points.

That is simply the life of a professional tennis player. They get ranking points from winning matches in the main draw. The more points accumulated, the more money, the more point, the higher ranking............. They don't get any ranking points for not playing. He gets nothing for playing video games in Atlanta.

Donald loses enough matches that he should not be getting burned out on the tour. His level of play he normally loses in the first or second rounds. That gives him plenty days to travel and prepare for the next event. He has earned enough in his career that he can afford the lean weeks of first round losses. I would like to see him do that.

The Donald started out his career with plenty of financial bang with a very nice Nike endorsement along with wild cards entries into major tour events. Now a day, he does not have many endorsements to aid him for travel, stay and training. Lucky his parents have a tennis business and are his personal coaches and business agent, so overhead is super low. I think he would make a great living being a tennis analyst with ESPN/EuroSport/TennisChannel after he is done on the tour.

The Don comes out of his fall hibernation to qualify for the main draw in Switzerland. Can he get enough good work done this fall to stay in the top 100 or, will he be playing soon in a challenger near you?

Maybe when The Donald retires he'll be a WTA coach/hitting partner to someone like Taylor Townsend.
??? Taylor has gone up in the rankings but has regress back to the Future Circuit I think? Last time I saw her was with Donald in mixed doubles play! I think she is ranked above 200!

Three set battle for the winner..............Stan. Very respectable effort for Donald. He was down five three in the second and got the break back to win in a tiebreak. Very entertaining match to watch. Nice tennis and some great shotmaking from both. Don, as usual, lost his focus a bit to start the third and got down an early break. That time, Stan did not let him get it back.

Poor Donald, was ranked #1 in the draw with a ranking of 88 and lose in the 1st round but a three set match with tiebreaker 7-3 in the City of Onkaparinga Tennis Challenger in Australia. The Donald will have another tournament maybe, qualifier or maybe straight into the draw of the AO! The Donald is on the edge of the draw!

Cash, yes; points (45 for 2R), meh.

It does raise his ranking to low 70s (72-74) which ensures auto entry into the next few Slams, even gives him a little room to slide and still get auto-entry. Wins like 1st round of Slam matter a lot to the journeymen ranked around where DY is. That ranking will also get him auto entry into some smaller ATP tournaments, though he'll have to qualify for Masters and some (most?) of the 500s depending on the field.

45 points to a 90 ranked journeyman is worth the while. Even with that, he is at the qualie level for tour events.

He can get into a fair number of 250s with his post-AO ranking, as many top players don't partake and there are often two or three happening simultaneously. Not all, but certainly some.

Herr Kohlschreiber made a nice parting gift for The Donald in the shape of a bagel. Perhaps as tasty as the ones Not young anymore Young enjoys at his favorite franchise with the Golden Arches outside.

After AO, The Donald is 85 in the ranking! Hopefully, he can do well in the Challengers to bring it back to the 60 range to get in the main draw of 250, 500 and 1000 ATP tournaments! Qualifying rounds is a struggle and should be avoided at all cost!

His ranking at cutoff dates for the three concurrent 250s in Quito/Montpelier/Sofia will probably get him direct entry. If he was pressing for points, he would be in the Maui Challenger as #1 seed. That might have been a nice pit stop on the way back home, BTW.

The Donald won against Ivo Karonvic, the 2nd seeded player at Delray! Into the second round! The Donald is on a roll in 2017! The Donald is playing like a top five seeded player that been away from the tour and beginning again, sort of like Rafa or Roger!

Look for Donald to reach top 10 soon. this guy is finally showing his talent like it is supposed to be.
Define "soon". Place wager with me if your definition of "soon" is by YE 2017:

He makes top 10, I enroll in the Prognosticators Hall of Fame correspondence course and mail you the enrollment fee.

He stays outside top 30, you never poast here again.

YE 11-29 is a push.

Deal?

How high do you think he can go? Absolutely love watching him play.

Clay will be a test for him to maintain this momentum and he hasn't done much on the grass with the exception of a SF at Newport last summer. That's a chunk of the calendar to be sacrificing points needed for a top 20 ranking. I say he finishes in top 50, maybe 40.

nice to see donald doing well :)

by the way, the ATP website has already him in the SF, defeating darcis by WO... is that a mistake ?
That is correct.

Meanwhile "The Donald" goes to Mexico next week for the Acapulco Qualifiers with a whole host of Amuricans bursting to make American tennis great again.

The Donald lost in the semis to Jack Sock who won Delray!

The Donald today made it past the 1st round against Tomic at Acapulco!

The Donald move to 63 in the rankings from 69!

He's actually up to #59 in the rankings and #31 in The Race to London.

That great news - 59! The Donald started the year at around high 80s I think! He has learn it seems how to comeback in games! He could be 0-40 on his serve and somehow now; he can pull out of it and win the game! Never was able to do before and he would show his emotions too. But now he calm and treats it like something that needs his full attention. Completely changed attitude!

He's had a nice spring hardcourt run after winning a round at the AO -- SFs in Memphis; SFs in Delray Beach (finally coming through vs. Karlovic who has beat him multiple times); winning a round at the 500 in Acapulco. This may not sound incredible, but it's the type of run that journeymen (which he clearly is at this point) like Donald need to make money and maintain a ranking good enough for auto-entry into Slams.

I still hold out hope that he can win an ATP title (most likely a 250) before he retires. Memphis was a good opportunity as he beat Isner and played Harrison in the SFs and lost (who he has beaten multiple times before but who is actually ranked higher than DY right now and playing well).

As we've seen so much these days, players really seem to come into their own much later now. He's only 27, and doesn't seem injury-prone, so he could have a number of good years left.
