The myth called Roger Federer's LAST chance

Feather

Legend
Roger Federer lost in the Wimbledon final of 2014. He made a final after two years, and with Novak Dojokovic stopping him that year many people here said this was Roger's last chance to win a major.

The same thing happened when he lost to Marin Cilic in US 2014. Novak was out before Roger played Marin and when Roger lost people said the same thing. There was no Andy Murray or Novak Djokovic or Rafa Nadal left in the draw and it was probably his last chance to win a major and Roger "blew" it away

Enter 2015. Wimbledon 2015, US Open 2015 the same story continues. Roger kept on missing out on his "last" chance to win a major again and again.

Wimbledon 2016, this time also we can see people voicing the same thing. This is Roger's last chance to win a major. I really don't subscribe to that. I am NOT saying he will certainly win 18 one day but I am just saying that he may get chance to win a major again also. I don't think this could be his last chance. Of course, the window is diminishing but Roger is certainly not gonna vanish after Wimbledon if he doesn't win here.

@Feather Genuine Q: Do you think this "last chance" stuff is unique to Fed? In a lot of sports, I know that people get attached to favorites, but I don't know that it's happened to nearly this extent.

Going back a ways, think about how Borg bypassed any of the "last chance" speculation, and jumped straight to the mythical realm of "What if?" :D

1 - WImbledon is his best slam
2 - Novak eliminated early which won't happen again for the rest of Roger's career

so yeah, I would say this is Roger's last chance.
Not that I disagree with either of those points, but here's a question for you: Did you ever wonder about his "last chance" before? I'm guessing that answer is "Yes."

That's the thing. Roger is living the "what if" that Borg gave us with his early departure.
Appreciate your point with that, but their games are very different... What's analogous here other than that they both won a bunch of majors?

I am not saying he will win number 18 for sure! I am just saying I don't think this is his "last" chance.

Agree with the first point but second point, I don't know

I still dont think Fed has recovered fully, still very rusty yesterday...if he loses this one, he will have one more crack with a fully healthy body.

I see Fed making couple more deep runs at least till 2017. It just has to align with Djok losing.

That said, he has a huge win record against Cilic / Raonic / Murray.

As long as he is not extended to 5 sets in any of the matches, he has a great chance.

I think if he beats Cilic in 3 or easy 4 sets, his chances of winning the title goes very high

He always said that he would keep playing until at least the Olympics 2016. So from now on, any day could be the least (to be dramatic). His body is bad now, true, but who says it will get any better? Which pro athlete gets MORE fit after 35?

People were doing it with Djokovic as well at FO. The 2014 defeat with Rafa was his last chance to win it apparently, then the lost to Stan was also his last chance, before this years final it was most definitely his final chance. What would next year have been? His final, final chance? Lmao. Of course if a person goes slamless for too long, you question whether he would ever win one again, but a lot of these fans are melodramatic.

Feather, I don't think we should be taking "last chance" literally.
Each time we see a glimmer of hope (for whatever reason) we say "last chance". Perhaps we feel such a chance is not going to keep coming.

This time round, I am not gonna say last chance till he reaches the final.

You are right. I think Federer can play top 3 level tennis until the end of this year and if he gets lucky and things fall into places in his favor, you never know. Realistically, though, I agree his best chances for no. 18 was 2014 Wimbledon and USO.

Even last year's USO slipped through his fingers... ridiculous. 4/23 on BPs, I think.

Fed is especially unlucky that for once when the draw opened up for him , he is in a bad shape both physically and confidence wise. If he had caught a lucky break one of those times when he made the last 3 finals, he'd have won #18 by now.

Fastest slam, too.
Believe.
Wimby 2016 is highly unlikely, dude is rusty as hell.

I bet my life that nobody expected Novak to lose to Querrey, so how on earth can you say it won't happen again?

But why?
Both Wimbledon and US Open 2015 showed a better Fed compared to 2014

I don't get it why people are saying Wimbledon or US 2014 was his last chance.

Didn't Roger play the same opponent in W 2015 and US 2015? He lost three Majors to the same man. I don't understand selecting the first match and saying that was his last chance.

Was it because it was a five setter?

It would be because it was the last time he looked like a world #1 quality player. He's been 'the best of the rest' ever since. Do I make a difference between the two? You bet I do!

At his age, and continuing problems with injury, he does not have long to win another. He has the drive to win one more, but this cannot stretch into 2017.

Lol, Federer will have his chances to win another major until the day he retires. The guy's one resilient SOB - he just doesn't go away!

You're such a pathetic poster.
Why? Russeljones might very well be right. It's a realistic opinion.
He's a Fed fan, but refuses to have his mind set on Dreams-in-Lala-land.

There are a lot of folks around here who act as if Djokovic were the only one to stop Fed at Wimbledon.
Well I have a message for you: Cilic, Raonic, Berdych and Murray are all quite notable contenders, still.

Until last year it had just to align with Djoko losing early, but this year, until proven otherwise, he is declined. Fed last year wouldn't have lost to Zverev and Thiem. Until he has beaten a threatening player, we can't know how good he is at the moment.

Not his best chance. He will always be a contender at Wimbledon and US Open.

2014 US Open was....Nishikori was dead in the final.

If only Cilic did not goat that day.

This year...if he was playing as well as 2014 and 15...I would say best chance. Damm Novak losing this year instead of last year to Anderson.

I'm never going to write Fed off while he is still playing, but it does feel as though his last chance may have already passed. He'll need some things to go his way to have another shot in 2022 ...
