Thiem has overachieved at this French Open

If you look at his clay season this year he was nowhere close to winning even a Masters. Losing to Lajovic in R2 of Monte Carlo, losing to Verdasco in R2 of Rome, losing to Djere in R1 of Rio - this isn't really the calibre of player you'd expect to find in the semifinals of the clay Slam.

I suppose, congrats for him for making it thus far, but let's not kid ourselves; he's overachieved to get here. He's done better in this tournament than A. Zverev who already has proven his clay superiority over Thiem by winning 2 clay Masters to Thiem's 0.

Overachieved by getting to the semi finals of the french open......something he has accomplished four years in a row now.

Ok mate.

Or perhaps he found his form and is peaking right on time. You can't underestimate a player of his caliber, all is still possible

Are 4 consecutive semifinals at the French Open now synonymous with overarchieve? What kind of stupidity is that?
Does the poster fear that the Austrian will defeat the Serbian tomorrow?
I mean, Thiem has more balls than Zverev and his pulse will not shake when he faces your idol.

While his results on clay this year haven't been great, he is the number 4 seed for a reason.

If anything, the seed that I wouldn't have locked into the semis before the start of the tourney is the #3.

His two best matches (other than against Nadal) have been his last two matches, which is a great sign for him. With his skill set and career projection, this is the minimum of what he should be achieving.

LOL, yep. I wonder why Thiem though? I thought he liked all one handed backhand players.
It's amazing. He's got some solid analysis in his post history, but this 'hate' he's got for Theim has entered straight up Andy Kaufman territory. He's living the gimmick, full stop, and it never ceases to be entertaining.

Yeah, I would say not reaching the finals would be underachieving. RG final last year, I don't care who he has to beat, for him personally, I think anything less would be disappointing.

He needs to be of the mindset now that anything except holding the trophy is underachieving. If he is happy as a runner up that’s the best he will do while Rafa is about.

I guess if we just pretend he didn't make the semi-finals of Madrid and was up a break in both sets vs Djokovic.

But that wouldn't fit your narrative, so don't worry, your secret's safe with me...

I think Thiem just needs some time to tune up his groundsrokes (a la Stanimal) and when he does, he basically overwhelms the opponents with the sheer weight of his shots. He's arguably the heaviest hitter in the game right now.

One of the reasons why he's more consistent at the FO compared to CC masters. Granted I'm not sure he'll ever win a FO either so we'll see.
