Thoughts on Laver Cup ?
I am a huge Federer fan but I really believe the LC is not a good idea and this for several reasons
  • I would remind everybody here in the forum, that there exists already an exciting team-competition , called the Daviscup. A lot of top players have refused to play Daviscup and the arguments for doing so have always been variations on the same theme : it didn't fit well in their tournament schedule , they needed the rest in that particular week etc ...I can only say that such players lack "love for their country", they can play not only for themselves for a change, in a team ,for the glory of their country and not thinking $$$$$ as first motivation. Roger Federer has been such a player, he has won the Daviscup alongside Stan Wawrinka a couple of years ago but throughout his long career he has not given it the attention it deserves. Roger is always the first to highlight he really respects the all-time-greats and the game itself but to me his DavisCup-record is a real stain on that reputation.
  • I have seen some matches in the LC and some of them were really great (Fed vs Kyrgios for example), so it is true to say that the players contributed to a nice event but a true tennis lover could immediately sense that the whole thing was artificial. Roger and Nadal did everything in their power to highlight the importance & seriousness of the event but please ...there is only so much that marketing can do.
  • This tournament is organised in a period of the year where the players prepare for the Asian part of the tour and conflicts directly with ATP Metz & ATP Sint-Petersburg. It undermines the ATP-product and everybody who says 'it is a free country, they can do what they want' should take into consideration that all of these players have earned million of dollars ...on the ATP tour.To me it is spitting in the face of the ATP while earning a pot of gold given by others. Loyalty is a rare quality it seems:(
  • Who gets picked for playing Laver cup ? There are serious questions of objectivity which need to be raised from that perspective.
  • A long story short : setting up an artificial team competition in this period of the tennis year is only good for the wallet of these players or the organisors but it doesnt respect the history of the game.
I rest my case.
