Time for a Vantage...(problem)

Time to order a vantage, the only problem I have now is whether to go with the closed string pattern or the open one for the 95 square inch head size. Cliff, can you share your experiences with spin in particular in comparison with other pro staff frames? What I'm really trying to decide is if the added control is worth losing the added spin of an open face. Paul, if you happen to read this, you had emailed me awhile ago saying that the price for Americans should be at the 200 dollar mark, is this true yet?

Go with the control over the spin. I think it is more of the racquet movement ( low to high ) than the actual string pattern. I have one and I should have gotten the smaller head size ( 90 sq in) IMHO. Good luck.

Are you going to gain that much more control with the slightly smaller sweet spot? I prefer open patterns not just for added spin but because they generally feel less 'boardy'.

you string denser racquets with lower tensions to get the same sweetspots and to stop them feeling boardy!

But lower tensions, less control, more power.....which might lead us to use a poly to reign in some of that power....which would give us less feel....etc. etc. etc. And round and round we go.

Honestly, I don't think it makes as big of a difference as we'd like to believe. I know at my level, I'm much more likely to be affected by a slight cross wind than I would using a more or less dense string pattern. But that's just me.

Coda, if you really want to be thorough in deciding, I'd suggest that you run your prefered racket specs through the TW racket finder, find a couple that are 16x18 and a couple that are 18x20 and demo those. The rackets may be completely different from each other, but you may begin to feel the difference between string beds. Just a thought.

no the point of dense pattern is you CAN sting lower and STILL get the same control... and get more power, and dwelltime, and save on strings... thats the whole point of dense patterns.

Well to be honest the 95 sq inch vantage high dense string pattern has more than ample spin. It has tons of it. You get excellent control and enormous spin potential (this is good racket for doing drop volleys that return to your side of the court).so if i had to choose between open string or dense i would certainly take the dense string pattern.

don't know if you ordered yet. I have the 95 with 18X20 and it is perfect (for me) I have no problem generating spin.

Coda to be honest i'm not really a fan of the pro staffs especially the ncodes. the previous model the tour i preferred. well to be honest again i found that pro staff more like the yonex mp tour 1 more a racket for hitting flat than hitting heavy spin.so can't really comment on the spin issue but stability wise the vantage is up there with the very best and even surpassing them. hopes this helps

15%...ahhh! I think I'll order one of each string pattern then get back to you guys on my choice. I really like the idea of more control, more dwell time, less of a boardy feel but as a S&Ver the thought of losing any spin potential on my serves is scary.

PS: tommy, what weight/balance do you have and what seems to be the swingweight of it? I'm looking at either the 11.7oz or the 11.4oz both in 12 Pts HL.

My personal frames are code 231511, dunlop grip, #3, white tack. My frames probably have the highest swingweight of the entire line, but i haven't measured them yet. I'm thinking of shipping them to the USRSA for a measurement. if you are going to do it, I always suggest the max weight, especially when headlight. but the half ounce won't make much of a difference either way.

by the way, my slice serve cuts away like johnny macs again...never thought a racquet would make that much difference.
