Toni and his excuses

Uncle Toni back to discuss on Rafael’s knee and his condition. In a new interview he declared that they scheduled to be at 100% only at Roland Garros.

“Truth is that when we went back from Vina del Mar and San Paolo we had a lot of doubts and worries. We never thought of winning so many tournaments. But overall we are very happy and surprised on Rafa’s condition. He’s fine, there’s no doubt. Maybe not 100% because he could not train with the right consistency, but I think for Roland Garros will be the maximum of his shape. The training was the problem of his comeback because we could not plan anything. We had to train every day to see the progress of his knee. If he was better we could increase the workload, otherwise, instead we had to decrease it and unfortunately sometimes happened. “

Then he added few words about MonteCarlo final match in which he lost against a greta Novak Djokovic :

“In Monte Carlo in the final was missing a lot of concreteness in the second set this was the real problem. To beat someone like Djokovic you know that you have to give 100%, you can not afford to drop any kind. And in the final in Monte Carlo, in the second set Rafa has had a problem of fatigue from 4-2 in the second set onwards. The intensity was too much for his current fitness level. “

Considering also that Rafa admitted that he had some back problems during the torunament in MonteCarlo we surelly can say that he was like an hero reaching the final in a such tough tournament. Now we’ll see Rafa this week in Barcelona and I think we’ll be able to understand if his condition is better or if he still accuse fatigue from Rolex Tour.

Further bad news: Nadal lost to a Djokovic with only one good ankle and very little clay court practice coming in.:|

Great news! That's where he'll need his top form the most obviously.

But didn't they say that about MC? They just keep pushing the date back further and further because they know his knee is far from being healed. He's not winning RG or any other slam no matter what,

I thought the worst when I read the tread title but there's nothing bad coming out of this from Toni and no excuses. He said Rafa wasn't able to train as much as he would have normally, which is a fact, and he's not trying to take anything away from Djokovic. Nadal already said he's not used to playing at that level for extended periods yet and was a bit tired after 4-2. He'll be more ready at Madrid and Rome.

Toni makes it seem like Djokovic's victories over Nadal in Rome and Madrid in 2011 never happened...when Nadal was IN SHAPE!
It took a decline in Djokovic's form for Nadal to finally get some wins together. And now by the looks of it, the role has reversed with Djokovic getting his mojo back and Nadal once again not knowing what to do when Djokovic is in form. Denial is good for the Rafa camp.

Nadal is garbage in Madrid. Altitude and faster courts...he's not beating Djokovic there. He'll have a better chance in Rome.

He never implied that Djokovic can't beat a fit Rafa. Stop looking for more than there is. Nadal could have won the second set, and more than likely would have, without a few UE's and tired swings. Not Djokovic's fault, and doesn't guarantee anyone a win or a loss, but it is what it is. When Rafa and Djokovic meet on clay, Nadal should win. 2011 doesn't change that, only Nadal's inevitable decline will.

If the above from Toni is not an excuse, what counts as an excuse ?

I take it you've probably never played tennis in your life. If you have, then you'd probably realize that breaking serve is only half of it. You actually have to hold your serve to maintain your advantage. And as we all know, Nadal doesn't do that very well when Djokovic is across the net.
"His return is something unbelievable, no?" -Nadal on the Djokovic ROS

Anybody find it funny how Nadal was so frustrated with Djokovic's defense that he started trying to hit through Djokovic with brutal forehands....on molasses clay of all surfaces!
Nadal didn't get the memo that you can't hit through opponents on ultra slow clay courts. You have to grind for every point.

Yes, a bit amusing rafa did that, which just highlighted how gassed he was / or concentration went ??..even after one and a half hours v djokovic.

I have to agree with what Clarky said. The Nadal camp did state many times that the goal was to be ready for Monte Carlo. If they are still having problems, then it is possible that RG is just going to come too soon.

Also, I think the Madrid then Rome combo could work against Nadal, if he plays Djokovic in both. In Madrid, Djokovic has a much better chance to beat Nadal, since those conditions are Nadal's worst on a clay court. If Nadal goes down 2-0 on the clay, then in Rome in confidence could be seriously effected, and Djokovic could sneak yet another win.

If Rome had happened first, the conditions would have been more favorable for Nadal to even the score and stop the Djoker momentum. Madrid could be where the mental battle between them is won.

Toni is frustrated because he is a coach with no winning plan against Djoker. He is responsible for all the on court coaching violations because he cant sit calmly on his seat and constantly yells and gives useless instructions.

I think Toni is spot on. Nadal clearly isnt fit enough to play at the highest level for a long period of time. That was clearly evident at MC. Furthermore Nadal did say before MC I think, that he was not able to train a lot before MC, so clearly he wasnt fully prepared to beat the BEAST Nole.
DOnt know why some people are you so agitated about. I wonder what they will say when Fed fails to defend Madrid
