Rafa defending his 2017 clay points

So, great start! Rafa has safely defended his points from Monte Carlo and Barcelona from last year. He has Madrid (1000), Rome (180) and Roland Garros (2000) to go. He is only 100 ranking points in front of Federer so one slip up will cost him the # 1 ranking as it did Federer when he didn’t defend his Indian Wells and Miami points.

If there is a Rome loss - he only needs to win two matches to defend his points. So a quarter, semi or final loss wouldn't be a disaster.

He will defend everything. He's obliterated all the players who "could" theoretically trouble him, and it's given us a clearer picture of his level relative to everyone else. He hasn't even come close to being pushed so far, so he might even have enough in the tank to go deeper in Rome and still win RG comfortably. Overplaying is the risk Rafa is taking, and IMO that will only catch up to him in Wimbledon.

Steve Tignor wrote an excellent article after Rafa's win in Barcelona and his final statement speaks volumes: "There has never been a NextGen on clay since Nadal’s career began, and there won’t be one until it ends."

Do we have the data of number of minutes spent by Rafa on court in MC & Barcelona this year compared to last year? Because the only thing stopping him from a clean sweep will be fatigue.
I think, this year he has had it easier than last year.

In fact he needs only one match, because R16 gives 90 points and QF 180. So he would stay 10 points in front of Federer.
But I don' t think Rafa has such thoughts. He will win Rome as well, and I say that as a big Federer fan. ;)

No doubt Rafa is looking great against the field. It comes down to health and focus and whether he faces an opponent or two who just happens to catch fire at the right time at an inconsistent moment in his own health or focus.

Last year I started to get worried Rafa would be burned out before Madrid. Like his spirit not as intenste for winning. Got no feeling for that at all this year.

Yes. He spent 606 minutes in Madrid last year. I will update the comparison after this year's edition.
I'm hoping he will get the job done in under 500 minutes this year.
Only 606? Same amout of matches as in MC?
I thought heavier balls more tricky. But he didnt mind that at during rain in Barcelona.
Maybe his more aggressive play with shorten it drastically down. Weat conditions in Barca looked promising, for even grass

I don't get your guy's math. Assuming Nadal wins Madrid, he needs to get to the QF of Rome, giving him/protecting his 180 points. That would be *3* wins, assuming a first round bye (R64, R32, R16), and that would keep him 100 points ahead of Federer.

Rafa's first match will be R32

That would do wonders for Rome.
Though entry list for Madrd probably better than Barca.
I am interested to see if he can win MC, Barcelona, Madrid, and Rome spending the same time on court as he did last year in these 4 tournaments.

What happens if Nadal skip Madrid but win Rome? No. 1 before the FO?

Not only he spent less time on court but he also didn’t play anything before the clay season except for AO. That will give him another advantage.
And still few people are secretly hoping that he will run out of gas by Rome !

Ok. In that case, Nadal would still have to win two matches (R32, R16), not one, to get to the QF.
I stare at this stuff way too much. I'm still wrong. ChrisRF is correct. If Nadal wins Madrid, he'd only have to win one match in Rome to retain #1. If he went out in R16, he'd get 90 points and finish at 8,680, 10 points ahead of Fed.

Nadal has played:

1. Australian Open - QF's Hip issues, Cilic though played well.
2. Davis Cup in Valencia - Looked solid
3. Monte Carlo - Looked solid
4. Barcelona - Looked Solid

He hasn't played special Torro Rosso tennis, though his current level is above everyone else's. Djokovic might be a thorn if he can find some form which is touch and go at the mo.

452 minutes in total for Barcelona with an average of 90.40 minutes per match. 412 total minutes for Monte Carlo with an average of 82.40 minutes per match.
And they say clay is taxing for the body. Come on!
Rafa takes evidently less time per set to win on clay than on any other surface.
Rafa could stand a full yearly ATP calendar played on clay, if that were the case. :D

And people complain he takes too much time between serves :D
Think about if he takes 10 sec less pr serve. Matches would be over even quicker. Several minutes.
