Going by this list it looks like you'd favour 2004 for level of play.

Federer did throw in a pretty bad match in Toronto in 2004 in the SF against Johansson but otherwise he was great.

Others at a lower rung -- atleast 2 great matches , but where there were matches with slumps/below par level of play/inconsistency or level wasn't the very highest :

Hamburg 02
Bangkok 2004
USO 2005
YEC 06
USO 07
YEC 07
USO 08
Wim 09
Cincy 09
AO 10
Wim 12
Wim 17

(only tournaments won)

to be completed .....

my bad, I meant to type in Bangkok 04.
but then he had a 2-6 set vs Srichapan, so that should probably be out as well.

no, I'll take 2006 over 04 (clay)

I figured, just going by that list he had more impressive tournaments in 2004.

That Bangkok match with Srichapan wasn't great but it wasn't bad either, Srichapan was striking the ball really well and playing aggressive - it was forehand porn at times.

Ranking slams by top 3 level of play:

AO: 2007 > 2005 > 2004
FO: 2006 > 2007 > 2011 (I think 2006 and 2007 Federer would prefer the 2011 balls, and 2011 Federer wouldn't play as well with the bigger balls. I think 2006 Federer and 2007 Federer beat 2011/2013 Djokovic and maybe 2011 Nadal.)
Wimbledon: 2003 > 2006 > 2005
US Open: 2006 > 2004 > 2007

IW: 2005 > 2006 > 2004
Hamburg: 2005 > 2004 > 2007
Cincinnati: 2012 > 2015 > 2009

WTF: 2004 > 2003 > 2007 (I'd take 2007 over 2010 tbh. Pretty confident that 2010 Federer also loses to Gonzalez and probably plays closer matches with Nadal, etc.)

But at the 2003 YEC, he almost lost to Agassi in the RR. Same deal as in YEC 2006 against Roddick.

he beat everyone with ease after that in YEC 03:
Nalby : 6-3,6-0
Ferrero : 6-3,6-1
Roddick : 7-6,6-2
Agassi : 6-3,6-0,6-4

in 06 YEC , in the other RR matches
Nalby : 3-6,6-1,6-1 (lost a set)
Ljubicic : 7-6,6-4

he didn't hit top form until the semi
Nadal : 6-4,7-5
Blake : 6-0,6-3,6-4

I think there's a good case for 05 RG to be #1 actually. Also, 05 USO over 07, 05 was a little more inconsistent but could reach a higher level. I'd also put 04 AO #1 and 04 USO would have a case too but that's just me.

YEC 2010 over YEC 07 by a bit IMO. I don't think he'd lose to Gonzalez of YEC 07.

Any reasoning on RG 2005 being first?

TBF that was probably the best performance Gonzalez has put in against Fed. His forehand was a monster that match. Plus after that loss Federer put together his best string of matches since AO 2007. His level in the semi and the final was extremely high. His performance against Ferrer, in particular, probably ranks up there with the AO SF and the Hamburg F as one of his best showings of the year.

Great lists before by the way--hard to find anything to disagree with.

I also agree on this one he lost against a really great Gonzalez there is no shame on that, his performance vs Nadal and Ferrer in Semifinal and Final was much better than vs Djoker and Nadal in 2010.

Very compelling list. Might swap 05 and 04 AOs, probably put RG 05 in the top three, maybe even at the very top, probably 06 Wimbledon over 03 because of better consistency in 06. But even then I'm not all that confident that these suggestions are right.
