Disturbing is the perfect word for that match. That guy puts the Demntieva/Jankovic/Safina/etc. meltdowns to shame.
The most delicate brain in the game turns out to be on the men's side.

Golubev was terrified of winning a set, it seemed. It was far worse than what Andujar did at the French Open in the third set against Nadal.

odd stats!

The suggestion that Goly was simply going for it and hoping it would all stick certainly is borne out by these numbers.

Nadal, on the other hand, needs to get that first serve % up a little more for the bigger guns. And his break point % could use a boost, too. But, in all honesty, those who play shorter balls ain general are in a more vulnerable place with Djoker and Murray and even Fed, from what I could see last night. Rafa CAN play deep, but he'll need to do it consistently and he'll need that first serve like he had last year. His competitiveness, tho, can also save him when the going gets really tough.

Choke jobs are one downfall of the nature of an individual sport. It's hard for an entire team to collectively choke when they get to support each other and pump each other up. Most individual sports don't have three-hour or five-hour competitions like in tennis. It can be brutal when you're the only one out there for that long.

First set: Golubev leads 3-2 with a break. Nadal comes back to win it 6-3.

Second set: Golubev throws away 7 set points, and Nadal wins it 7-6.

Third set: Golubev leads 5-2 with a double break, and Nadal wins it 7-5.

LOL :D

What did she say (and was asked for, for that matter) ?

Just being stuck up in the pre-match interview. Clearly not thinking about the questions and not even trying to smile or talk. I don't think she needs to fake being that focused.

I don't even like to think what golubev is feeling right now!

Mahut next for Nadal. Mahut won their only previous meeting by the score of 7-5, 7-6, in the quarter finals of 2007 Queen's Club.

It's a shame that the big screen in Ashe stadium wasn't working so that they could have showed the replay of the point in which Nadal barely got to the drop shot. Had Golubev seen with his own eyes that Nadal did indeed get to the ball on one bounce, he would have settled down and kept his concentration and probably have won the 2nd set. He didn't even try to win that 2nd set tiebreak because he was still fuming and thinking about how he was robbed on that point.

Lolubev, what a mug. How can you be up a break in all three sets and not win a single one? I don't think even Verdasco or Troicki can pull this off.

Off the charts.

He broke Nadal about 5 times and still lost

Served for set in second and twice in third

Legit 10+

Guy blows a promising lead in the first set.

Serving for the set a 40-love and finds a way to get broken. In total loses 7 set points

Third set he's up 5-2 and in the end loses in 7-5.

Now i can see how he lost 17 straight matches.

Wow after reading this there is no doubt I need to watch the highlights :)

Nadal is immune to everyone apart from Djokovic.

Against everyone else - his NAME alone is enough to win the match - that includes against Federer. It really doesn't matter how well or badly he plays.

As bad as Nadal is playing, there might be a little truth to this theory.

I hope Nadal wins. I'm going to the Open on Thursday and Friday and Nadal's one of the few top tenners I've never actually seen live. He's always lost a day or two before I get to tournaments. >.<

 You evil genius you

Nadal will probably calm down after today. Golubev really should have done better than losing in straight sets last night, but there really aren't that many guys who just attack attack attack like that.

That wasn't Nadal's best match last night, but man does he attack or what? His foot's obviously fine because he had that hustle again.

Golubev? I think we got the crux of his eighteen match losing streak. He actually has a really good game, but when he gets real close to winning a set, or a match, or whatever, he tightens up. First few games of each set, he went RIGHT at Nadal. After he'd hit that 5th game, he'd hit the ball and hope to the heavens he didn't make a mistake. He'd quit attacking, and with Nadal, you have to do that 24/7.
