The USTA announced that the 2006 US Open purse will top $18.5 million, with the potential to exceed $21.1 million -- representing the highest annual purse in sports. In addition to the base purse of $18.5 million, the top three men's and women's finishers in the US Open Series may earn up to an additional $2.6 million in bonus prize money at the US Open.

Both the men's and women's US Open singles champions will earn $1.2 million with the ability to earn an additional $1 million in bonus prize money (for a total $2.2 million potential payout) based on their performances in the US Open Series. In addition, both US Open singles champions will receive a new Lexus GS 450h automobile.

US Open Prize Money

The 2006 US Open purse includes a 6.7% increase in men's and women's singles prize money from 2005's record payout. In 2005, the base purse was $17.7 million, and an additional $1.7 million was paid in bonus prize money -- for a total payout of $19.4 million.

Quite the money increase, and Golf is definately a sport, I could go into the many reasons why it is but i've done it so many times with others I won't bother.

1985 US Open champion made 187,500. Which seemed like a lot at the time.

USD 185,700 ('85) has the same purchasing power USD 353,570 ('06), which is more than USD 50K what Wimby's men's semifinalists earned this year.

Good sign for tennis.
