It was deemed to be "beyond therapeutic needs." - i.e. he was using drugs to not only help with asthma, but to play better at tennis. No different than using a steroid or something.

With a 109 ranking, it certainly doesn't seem like it gave him any unfair advantage.

How would you know? Competition is tough down in that area, and Volandri isn't getting any younger.

It used to be banned completely, but fortunately the WADA has come back on that decision around a decade ago. It is now allowed to be used by people who have been diagnosed with asthma, to a certain dosis. Apparently Volandri took more of it than that limited dose.

Ahhhh, I see. That is a bit different. I had to use albuterol for a while after I had Pertussis as a kid, and had never noticed any "stimulant" effect (it was mostly to build back actual lung mass). If adrenaline is the case, though, being the major component of salbutimol, that could very well help him out.

I use salbutamol every now and then during the summer season when I'm suffering from asthma due to hay fever. I never felt any reaction of my body or psyche that could be called pushing or something like that. the only positive reaction on my body is that I can breathe normal instead of sufffering from labored breathing.

It is a steroid. I use it myself for asthma attacks. If it doesn't work, my doctor prescribe a 6 day steroidal pack. For asthma it is two puffs max per day but you if you take it alot, I'm sure it works like the steroid pills. BTW, I can feel it when I take the pills. I don't like the stuff because of the side effects but much less aches and pains.

1. Your performance is being enhanced by taking the drug. You admitted it.

2. Imagine that you were perfectly healthy and took the drug. Would your performance be enhanced? Would there be a blood level required to reach that enhanced performance.

Any Salbutamol without a TUE and excessive levels of salbutamol SHOULD be banned.

I know some people have touched on it briefly, but what exactly is asthma medicine? it just seems strange that it's something you can use legally a certain amount, but then if you use it more it becomes an enhancing drug?

if someone would want to use it to enhance the performance of what their body is capable of or to improve their condition, they would use something else that is much more effective than salbutamol.

my performance is not being enhanced so that I play much better than I usually do or am in better shape. The only improvement is that I can breath normally.

not necessarily. as I wrote above there are a lot of drugs that are much more effective than salbutamol in terms of doping. as all the substances are on the doping list why would somebody take the less effective one(s)?
