Finally something other than Fed/Rafa to discuss...

Could she make a statement and play will in her return to the WTA?

I think so :)

Is Navratilova going to come back? She has been on the fringes of pro tennis for the past couple of years, playing celebrity doubles and such.

From correspondents in Brussels, Belgium
March 25, 2009 Former world No.1 Kim Clijsters will announce this week her plans for the 2009 WTA season amidst rumours the Belgian 25-year-old is set to return to full competition.

Journalists have been invited to the northern Belgian city of Bree for a media conference on Friday (EDT) where the former grand slam winner will finally put to rest the swirling uncertainty over her future plans.

The right-hander won 34 WTA tournaments and 11 doubles' crowns, including the 2005 US Open title when she defeated French player Mary Pierce 6-3 6-1 at Flushing Meadows.

She lost four grand slam finals notably the 2003 French Open and US Open championship matches, as well as the 2004 Australian Open to compatriot and rival Justine Henin, who has also since retired.

Clijsters married American basketball player Brian Lynch in 2007 and the couple celebrated the birth of their daughter Jade Elie in February 2008, which was the initial reason for her retirement.

She was also engaged to Australian tennis star Lleyton Hewitt before suddenly pulling out of the relationship in 2004, shortly before the couple were due to be married.

She reached the top of the world rankings in August 2003 and had a record of 427 wins against 104 defeats as well as having the rare distinction of holding the No.1 spot in both singles and doubles in 2003.

The popular Belgian has been competing in a number of exhibition events in recent months and is also set to play at an exhibition tournament this summer at Wimbledon along with Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf and Tim Henman.

Comebacks Forbidden...thinking About The Future...

I am quoting myself because I think DEFINITELY that Tennis does not need any comebacks,it needs to promote new faces, new talents...The sport needs to make a bet on the future and not live from the past glory...
Ex-players as Clijsters should play only exhibitions or NON COMPETITIVE matches whose proceedings would be in all cases for charitable purposes...
I coinsider that in all cases the associations should prohibit the comeback of retired players...
In that case I would also like a comeback of Gabriella Sabatini and Steffi Graf....

it seems the top female players of recent times dont actually know the meaning of the word retirement. they just taken a year or two off and come back, lol. but the fact that they then return to the top of the game does suggest that the womens game isnt progressing, rather it is stagnating

A player should get a WC if he deserves it on his current form or is a future prospect. If someone comes from retirement asking for a WC no matter how big of a name he/she is shouldn`t get one.Imagine Henman or Rusedski coming back and asking for a WC at Wimbledon.
If she comes back has some good results prior to the Us Open then we can talk but otherwise it`s not worthy.

Is she returning to languish in top 20? I wonder how commited she will be to the tour considering she has a baby at home.

Not a fan of her game. Smart of her to come back while WTA is on life-support. She can improve her legacy.

And USTA better award her WC.

Sabatini, forgot about her, my mum's favourite player as i was a kid, used to scream the house down whenever she was playing my mum.

If she gets back to her 2003-2005 form she can win many more slams with how the current womens field is. Even back then she was unlucky to only win one. Injured and missed almost all of 2004 when 3 inferior (Maria was young then remember) Russians all won majors. Should have won the 2001 French Open and 2002 Australia Open instead of Capriati but got a bit unlucky and choked a bit in both losses. So many final and semi losses to Henin who owned her. Now a much weaker field she could win alot more.

I disagree. Henman would probably get it. While most WCs are indeed to reward future prospects (and to get a top player in the draw after the cutoff date), they are also a marketing tool for tournaments and are important in that capacity. They give WCs to players who they think will draw interest and get people to buy tickets. They have a product to sell, and they reserve WCs just for that purpose.

I guess I see how some players can be more deserving than others based on current form, but if they were really deserving of being in the tournament, then they would have been ranked high enough for direct entry or would have played their way through qualifying.

People tend to think of WCs as "official" spots that are being commandeered by the touranment director. But, that's not the case. The only "official" spots are the ones that aren't WCs.
