5 mentioned the "Palm Springs WCT" which I don't recall. I'm aware of Dallas, Philadelphia, Foerst Hills, Stratton Mountain (I believe) and others), but would anyone know all of the WCT tournaments (and surfaces), or where I'd be able to find them????

Thanks.

Good list, here are some additions for 1971. In 1971, there were 3 other WCT tournaments at Rome in May on clay and Berkeley on hard court, both won by Laver, and Melbourne AO in Feb, won by Rosewall. The 1971 tour included 20 events, plus the final for the best 8 in Houston and Dallas. In the points standings, Laver lead Okker, Rosewall and Ashe.

Thanks urban,

I did not know that the '71 AO was a "WCT" event.

I know there are several events I've missed but couldn't find any documentation to support their being WCT events. Maybe some other posters have "local knowledge" can fill us in.

One example I am almost sure was a WCT event is:

4/22/1974 St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A.

Grand Prix Outdoor
Clay $50,000 Sgl 32 Smith, Stan
Dbl 16 El Shafei, Ismail /Fairlie, Brian

which was played at the same time as:

4/22/1974 Denver WCT, CO, USA

Grand Prix Indoor
Carpet $50,000 Sgl 32 Tanner, Roscoe
Dbl 16 Ashe, Arthur /Tanner, Roscoe

For those that don't know, starting in '73 (I believe) the WCT actually split its stable of players and would play two events in the same weekend. And some weekends Riordan's competing group with headliners Connors and Nastase would be playing in a third city. For example:

2/17/1974 Birmingham, AL, U.S.A.

Grand Prix Indoor
Carpet Sgl 32 Connors, Jimmy Connors def Sandy Mayer
Dbl 16 Fletcher, Ian /Mayer, Sandy

2/18/1974 London WCT, London

Grand Prix Indoor
Hard $50,000 Sgl 32 Bjorn Borg def. Mark Cox
Dbl 16
Borg, Bjorn /Bengtson, Ove Nils

2/18/1974 Hempstead WCT, Hempstead, NY, USA

Grand Prix Outdoor
Hard $50,000 Sgl 32 Stan Smith def. John Newcombe
Dbl 16 Borowiak, Jeff /Crealy, Dick

Two things strike me about this time.

Due to some relatively serious coin becoming available during this time serving as motivation for 2 and 3 "older generations" to hang around, the professional ranks being divided between competing tours, and those competing tours, in the interest of gaining greater exposure, playing multiple events in the same week, there was always the potential for 6 Hall of Famers being in Finals on the same Sunday.

Another great thing were the headliners regularly playing doubles at these events.

It was very, very cool time for tennis.

One more memory, and for those not so familiar with sports history, is how the 1972 WCT Finals held in Dallas, where:

Rosewall def. Laver 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-7 7-6(5) in front of a national TV audience on WNBC who aired the match in its entirety, ostensibly elevated tennis to mainstream sport status in America, in a way similar to what TV had done for the NFL by airing the "Greatest Game Ever Played" when the Baltimore Colts def. the NY Giants in 1958.

If people are interested, I'll post up more WCT years when I get the chance.

Rod Humphries' 1981 "Guide to World Championship Tennis", includes a review of the WCT Tours from 1971-1980. It lists the 20 events of the 1971 tour in chronological order as follows:
Philadelphia, Sydney, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Rome, Tehran, Bristol, Washington, Louisville, Quebec, Boston, Toronto, Fort Worth, San Fransisco, Vancouver, Cologne, Barcelona, Stockholm, Bologna.

Urban, are you sure about Berkeley & Melbourne?
Five-O: In addition to what you already have, this guide gives the following results for 1971:

Sydney (March 8-14)
Singles Rosewall d. Ashe 61 75 63
Doubles Newcombe/Roche d. Okker/Riessen 62 76

Rome (May 3-10)

Sorry, i gave the false venue with Melbourne, it was Sydney, but it was indeed the Australian Open that year 1971. The same week the famous title bout Ali-Frazier at Madison Square Garden took place. The Berkeley event was identical with the San Francisco event. It had probably the best field of the whole year (behind Wimbledon and with Rome), because top non-contract players like Stan Smith were also in the 64-draw. Some of the WCT events in 1971(like Rome, Stockholm or Madrid) had extended fields. The Bristol event was stopped at the semifinal stage due to rain. In that series of 20 events for at least 50000$ (winner 10.000$), the winner got 10 points, the runner-up 7, the sf 4, the qf 2 points, and the first round winner 1 point respectively.

Can you tell us if that '74 St. Louis, Missouri tourney was, in fact, a WCT event?

Thanks again,

Yes of course, how mindless of me.

Urban, can I ask you a question about the World of Tennis yearbooks? It's not related to the topic at hand but Angela Lumpkin in her 1985 Guide to the Literature of Tennis claims that the yearbooks were supposedly annually published in both New York and London, identical in content regarding facts and figures for the major events and circuits, but with some changes in focus depending on the audience. I ask because the yearbooks do have interesting write-ups in between all the numbers & figures, but I have only ever seen the UK publications. I think there may be nothing in it, but still.

Rosebud, I don't know about an US edition of the World of Tennis yearbooks. I have some early British editions by Barrett and Tingay. They had a lot of British country results in addition to the international circuit. Later on, there were the bigger editions by Barrett in cooperation with the ITF. I think, they closed the series around 2002. This series was a excellent reference. From the 70s, i have some more magazine like illustrated yearbooks by Slazenger or BP, with articles by the leading British journalists of the time.
