What do you think it takes for the WTA to be in same respect level as ATP

For me, I really think it comes down to women not being the best at the sport. Women dont really have a chance at beating the best in this sport, they can only compete amongst themselves, similarly to how young jr players do, who I also have no recognition of any names. I only have so much room in my heart, and so much attention span for various tennis players, as a form of entertainment. Other than the top 20 or so in the world, which are most likely men, I only occasionally pay attention to other players, like good looking players, or controversial ones. So I guess really, the way to earn respect is for a female player to beat the all time greatest player in the world in a game of tennis. :)

Interestingly, there are not many sports where men and women can compete equally enough for women to receive much respect, however in certain e-sports, women have occasionally earned spots on top teams, where people hardly consider it odd or out of the ordinary, even though its still uncommon. Though men still seem to have the competitive edge, respect is nearly equal enough to not bar women from esport leagues, so long she earns the respect and confidence of her teammates/tournament organizers.

I don't like it and I wouldn't hate for them to ban it but I think it's hear to stay. And it all started with Seles because of bloody Nick Bollettieri who also went on to coach Larcher De Brito (the worst of them all), Sharapova, Agassi, Serena and more.
I think it’s a huge part of why men’s tennis is watched more and even more respected.

Maybe it’s just me but if the shrieking went away then women’s tennis would be fine.

I don't remember anyone criticizing women's tennis in the 90s and 2000s, especially since the WTA was more interesting and fun to watch than the ATP. It's just that the level has dropped a lot in recent years, there's nothing sexist about that.

Competition wise it is, but too many men look down on it as a lesser version of the sport because the pace isn't quite there at times. The rallies, movement, and play is always on par really. I doubt those kind of people will ever change really, where they feel their male superiority would be in question if they ever dropped the bravado.

If that were true then Sharapova wouldn't be one of the biggest drawcards to the sport. I don't believe shrieking is the main reason the women aren't watched as much.

As long as your show pony gets TUE's the tour will never even be close to the ATP.

You cannot fix a lack of intergrity when it comes to sport. UFC is going through this now.

Exactly. And let's not forget that the sound is miced and amplified on TV much more than at the tournament. Perera sounds unbearable in that clip but the crowd were very supportive of her in that match and applauded her effort despite her bing totally outclassed by Williams.

I don’t think Sharapova's tennis is the reason she’s so popular...

Not one single top 10 WTA player in the QFs! It's a disgrace, not to mention a part-time tennis player who just had a baby, is almost 40 and blazing her way through the field.

Agree. Starting in juniors they can win by just getting the ball in play, hit good groundies; the male juniors go with big serve, big FH. I’ll never understand once one gets to the top 100 in juniors they don’t start expanding their games.

But disagree w the OP. and thread premise - men and women are different (Damore was right) and sports show it.

A lot of women don't expand their games cause of training and they think power tennis will be good enough.

There is a top 10 player in the QF's. Angie is in the top 10, just not seeded in the top 10.....
Also, Serena is younger than Federer is but no complaints of him blazing his way through the field...

Serena had no real draw except for Kiki who farted herself out of the tournament. Also playing on grass does not require a lot of energy like it would on clay and a slow hard court. That is why Serena was so psyched for Wimbledeon.

Some women are stronger than some men. I am certain that there are hundreds of women, if not thousands who are stronger than you.

LOLLOLOLOLLOLOL

THE AVERAGE 70 YEAR OLD MAN HAS THE GRIP STRENTH OF A MIDDLE AGE WOMAN

I can 100% I’m stronger than most woman who don’t lift weights competitively

Your arguments are utter BS and hinge on fairness and men are woman are equal in everything

The WTA shouldn't try to mimic the ATP.
I say let the WTA be what it is, and even more so if possible.
I want more of the drama circus that makes the WTA what it is. More Bouchard-Sharapova. More Konta sobbing for whatever reason. More Wozniacki imitating Niculescu's grunt, that was funny. More icy "handshakes" and the end of matches. They should also feud more openly on social media. More dirty laundry. More false rumors!

As for the actual tennis, you have to adjust your expectations.
Every hold of serve should be considered a turning point in a set. When a WTA player goes to the net, it should be considered as something very special, like a goalie trying to score a goal. And if the screaming bothers you, just lower the volume. Or not. After a while, your hearing will be so damaged that you won't hear much anyway.

That kind of thing does not help the women's revolution in sport. Women need to be taken seriously with their skill and talent then just looks and being a *****. The women want the equal prize money but they don't want put in more work, effort and skill.

A part of me thinks best of five helps their tennis skills then best of three cause during the first set the players are kind of rusty.

Best of five QF and beyond.

They have to go to BO5 as unbearable as that might be for some. If the 2008 men's Wimbledon was played under the rules of women's tennis it's a 6-4 6-4 win to Nadal. It rather diminishes the match.

This notion of women's tennis less interesting then men, is a myth cause women's tennis is interesting when you have the right competition and players pushing each other. To me I don't think the women are working to push each other the way ATP players are doing.

People were as equally interested in Chrissie and Martina then they were in Borg and McEnroe. What do you think it takes for the WTA to generate the kind of fanbase and crowd drawing like ATP?
This is specific to any sports that engage competition. This is not a girl or a boy thing. Tautology?

Serena Williams wins matches because she has a big serve

Her game is filled with so many holes yet she still wins because her service game compared to the rest of the tour is extraordinarily

It would require changes to our instincts. Every animal population understands competition between males, but has very little appreciation for females doing the same.

Most women too would rather watch the ATP than WTA.
The human population enjoys seeing people compete. Lap dogs follow the alpha or go home and lick their wounds if they got the balls to compete.

For me, women make too many errors on "rally balls" because they are trying to hit everything too hard. This is what is commonly called "brainless ball bashing" and seems to be quite common on the WTA as compared to the ATP.

Now please don't tell me that men make errors on rally balls too. Take the comment in the way I intend it and tell me if you think there's anything to it.

Which is why I prefer women's tennis when it is played with more finesse, artistry and point construction as opposed to power. Maybe it's just me. It is just my opinion. But I do hear Evert saying things like this sometimes in her commentary. Martina, Austin, Shriver and Carillo too. None of them really seem to be fans of the way many of the women play tennis now from what they say sometimes.
The commentators use words like little firecracker and enjoy the womens power game.
The finesse game might only be a shot here and there, thats ok no one wants to see a 100 percent finesse game oh wait there's a few out there that do. Radwanska has a power game saw her forced into it a couple months back. Just enjoy it. Stop complaining. Stop comparing and making generalizations.

I'm not a professional player, I only play part time. So no, I do not expect to beat them, nor is it a fair comparison. Unlike these pros I never had any opportunities to play properly as a kid. Again, it's an unfair comparison that frankly has no relevance to this ATP/WTA debate.

I am not the best player at my club but I would wipe the court with the female club champion there. That's a fair comparison, since none of us are pros.

At any level womens tennis is weak compared to mens.

People need to understand that women’s sports will never ever be as popular as men’s sports

Even in scenarios where women have better results(soccer), men still outperform then in terms of viewership

Those are the facts and feminists need to deal with it. Sorry to say

The women's tour is not primarily pitched at men, but the amount of interest men show in it, even if some of it is unsympathetic, is quite surprising.
Interest by men in women's tennis is heavily skewed towards people who don't play or only watch tennis as a sort of summer entertainment. That's why women's tournaments spend much more effort marketing themselves as a "day out" with bubbly, food deals, grouped seats etc to attract "general" people whereas men's tennis marketing leans more towards the athletic aspect.

Marketing appeals to perceived gender biases, that's all. And they still do this despite feminism, albeit more subtly.

You haven't posted anything that constitutes more than a general prejudice.

What?

On average men are stronger than women(FACT)

Men’s sports are more popular than women’s sports(FACT)

etc

Where are your arguments?

You have stated two facts with which I agree, but I don't see any arguments.

Nadal plays a stronger form of tennis than Federer or Nishikori, but I prefer the latter.

Men's sports are more popular for evolutionary, but also historical reasons.

Insofar as they are historical, women's sports are closing the gap rather rapidly.

Every time a thread comes up with legitimate criticisms of the WTA, some posters come out of the woodwork claiming it's sexist in nature or what have you.

Said posters never address the actual arguments, but simply dismiss the criticism with an insult of some kind

Sad to see this attitude...

Because the legitimacy of the arguments used by the Supreme Court judges who think they were graced with some superior powers to distribute good or bad points over fellow human beings is entirely based on sexism.

Unless someone can prove they have enough academic knowledge to have a serious discussion over the reality of men and women in sports, in today's society and in 2018, by bringing fair and diverse arguments from social, economic or anthropologic studies to backup his points, the doubt is 100%.

Saying women should scream less doesn't make you a genius. It just makes you a fat beer belly loud speaking individual that thinks he always knows more than the real professionals.

For that matter it did not take long for patronizing terms related to weight or girls' physical attributes to surface and be approved by certain well known suspects hence proving that the level of intellect is ras les pâquerettes.

And in a few years, mix in an overhead hit out of the air. While waiting for an AO men’s match in January I remember Kerber hitting an overhead on the bounce; the scream she let out would have made you think she cured cancer.

Come to think of it I don't remember the last time I saw a WTA player hit an overhead out of the air. I'm seeing a gross trend now where they wait and hit it as a swinging volley if they don't bounce it.

Long standing elite ATG talents. Even at this late stage Nadal and Federer have each other to deal with and guess who has rejoined the party.

Who does Serena have. So much room leftover for players to win Slams in the women's game with only one dominant force who has taken plenty of breaks from the game. The women will come again when two or three Serena quality players are in their primes on the tour concurrently.

Right now the WTA isn't very good, and the ATP isn't great either though it's still quite a bit better. Obviously the women cannot be on par with the men regarding strokes, shots, skills so they play on their own tour, but if Serena had her Nadal then it would be a lot more respected. Two dominant forces makes it harder for relative "mugs" to become world #1.
