What if the slam races ends 20-20-17

What if next year players like Thiem, Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas, Shapovalov(?) and others take over the slams while the Big 3 only start making the QF/SF/F?

Would you be OK with the slam race ending with Federer (20), Nadal (20) and Djokovic (17)? Or are you hoping for a different finish?

I'm personally fine with it as I love FEDAL but I'm curious to see what others would like to see happen.

I would be fine with both Fred and Ned staying at 20.

I'd be happy with this.

Of course, it simply won't happen.

So far, the only slam won by the younger generation has been when 2 of the big 3 were missing, and the other one got disqualified. Even then, it only happened because one guy choked slightly less than the other, not because he actually powered to victory.

Wishful thinking ;)

No way Fed wins 2 more slams. I can see 1, maybe.

We are in uncharted territory.

He would have slayed either of those turkeys in the USO Final, I can say that for sure. And who knows what would have happened in Wimbledon if they held it.

He might have got to 22 this year if Wimbledon had been held and he'd decided to play USO.

His knee was injured so he wouldn’t have played Wimbledon or USO regardless. And Wimbledon is the only one I can see him winning in the future

Best end would be 20x3. Really.

I don't really buy the knee injury story, I think it is just a cover for "I don't want to **** around with this COVID situation"

I'm pretty sure he could have played USO and is kicking himself for not doing it.

Typical recovery time for arthroscopy on the knee is like 6 weeks. That's assuming he actually had the second surgery, and again I'm very skeptical.

He came within a hair of beating Nadal and Djok in succession to win the W19 title, and Djokovic is definitely worse now than he was then. And he has beaten Rafa at 2 of 3 Slams in the past 3 years.

I doubt he would fake a knee injury. He has sponsors, millions of dollars on the line, he can't just announce that he has knee surgery with no proof.

Where is the proof?

When Dak Prescott's ankle snapped, we knew immediately who the surgeon was, a renowned ankle specialist who was flown in to perform the surgery.

Who performed Federer's knee surgeries?

Since when are players supposed to offer proof including names of surgeons for fans and the media? His sponsors and the ATP would have all that info.

Anything less than 22 for Nadal would feel weird and not OK at this point. Still so much Slam-winning potential. He’s not looking like someone on his last legs, like Federer at AO 2018, not even close.

it is perfectly fine if Big3 ends up with no more slams. I never thought Novak would go past 11 slams. Anything that he has won over 11 slams including RG2016 I consider as a bonus.

17 slams is nothing to snooze at :). amazing careers.

Usually when a surgery is performed on a big-name athlete, the media will talk to the surgeon who performed it.

Here is an article about Rafa's ankle surgery, the surgeon is named and quoted.

Here is another story where Murray discusses at length the surgeon who operated on his hip.

Can't find anything remotely similar for Federer.

The last great performance of Federer in NY was ... 5 years ago!
Not to mention that Federer's last title there was in 2008.

The Swiss can no longer reach the final rounds of a hard court Major tournament without avoiding getting injured and/or exhausted.

Fed fans would be happiest obviously.
But there is no chance of this happening. Djokovic and Nadal are both likely to continue winning slams. Fed likely won't win anymore though.

Correction: Of the US Open.

AO 2019: Defeated by Tsitsipas, who was the 14th seed.

AO 2020: 2 points from being beaten by Millman, before the Australian decided to choke against the Swiss; then a 4-set match against Fucsovics. And finally, Sandgren overtook the Australian and choked even worse, wasting 6 match points.
.
These types of players (out of the top 30, top 40, top 50) have already shown that they can defeat this very old version of Federer or at least have a very even match against him on this surface and format.

Sorry, but your idol won't win Majors on hard courts again.
Even a Wimbledon title is unlikely at this point of his career.

Why is a Wimbledon title unlikely?

Because at almost 40 years of age and after two surgical operations, he will not be able to bear the physical burden of playing and winning 7 matches (21 sets) in two weeks.

His reflexes are no longer the same as they used to be, neither is his concentration; For the rivals it is much easier to move the Swiss player than in his prime, which greatly facilitates wearing him down and prolonging the match which will cause Federer to arrive without energy and most likely injured in the final rounds of the Majors tournaments.
We've actually already seen it at the US Open 2019 and the Australian Open 2020.

And it will be even worse for him if he continues to play these kinds of tournaments.
His physical deterioration will become even more evident when he plays Wimbledon 2021, with almost 40 years of age.

He was 38 in the last one where he held MPs on the greatest baseliner of all time. Right?

And I've said repeatedly in this thread that I don't buy his cover story about the surgeries.

I was referring to how old Federer is going to be when Wimbledon 2021 is played.

Nadal said in an interview this year that he'd like to retire with 25 slams.
And Nadal is known for underestimating himself.
25 Slams? That would be probably another 3 RGs, another USO and maybe an AO I'd think. Probably achievable for him if he's lucky with his draw and can maintain his health.
