First thing first, the standing in matches right now are:

2-0 Fed
2-1 Andy
1-1 Delpo

If Fed loses, all three are tied at 2-1, in which case it goes to sets. The set standings are:

4-2 Roger
5-4 Murray
3-3 Delpo

With a straight set Delpo win tonight, the standings will be:

5-3 Delpo
5-4 Murray
4-4 Roger

The first thing Fed needs to do tonight is avoid a straight set loss.

If Del Potro wins in 3, the standings are:

5-4 Roger
5-4 Andy
5-4 Del Potro

In that scenario, it comes down to the games percentages. The scores have been:

Murray def. Del Potro 6-3 3-6 6-2
Murray lost to Federer 6-3 3-6 1-6
Murray def. Verdasco 6-4 6-7 7-6
Games Won: 44
Games Lost: 43
Games won %: 50.57%

Federer def. Verdasco 4-6 7-5 6-1
Federer def. Murray 3-6 6-3 6-1
Games Won: 32
Games Lost: 22
Games won %: 59.25%

Del Potro lost to Murray 3-6 6-3 2-6
Del Potro def. Verdasco 6-4 3-6 7-6
Games Won: 27
Games Lost: 31
Games Won %: 46.55%

As you can see, Del Potro is doing worse than Fed at the moment. Federer has a 5 game lead in wins and a 9 game lead in losses. I believe he just needs to maintain a good enough level and keep the sets lost tight (6-4, 7-5, 7-6) and/or win some easy sets (6-2, 6-1).

A Federer win tonight simplifies everything and puts him in the lead, and takes Del Potro out of the equation.

At this point, Verdasco's case for the semis is long gone

I assume that someone is telling Fed all of this...

Hahahahaaha can you imagine? "Hey, Roger. Listen...You can lose this one, but you've got to make it close and you've got to win a set. Think you can do it?"

Hmm... I don't think I can root for anything but Federer in straights. Honestly, the way Murray is playing, let him get into the semis!

If Del Potro beats Fed in 3 sets, 2 of which are tight and one of which goes firmly Delpo's way

then Del Potro and Federer both qualify

and the pusher goes home.

Federer cant act like "the nice samaritan" he wants those 200 points that a win over Del Po will give

Any win for Federer will take Murray through but a straight-sets win for Del Potro would put the Scot out, while a three-set win for Del Potro would see it come down to the percentage of games won by Murray, Federer and Del Potro.

This is incorrect right? They said so on the BBC site:?

What has to happen to have Murray out? I think only a 2-1 win for Delpo, with both getting to a better game percentage than Murray?

Yep, the only way Murray will be out is if Del Po wins in 3 with the sets he wins being relatively easy with breaks.

So odds are Murray is going through. DelPo in straights gets rid of Federer and any Fed win gets rid of DelPo. They can't worry about Murray since they themselves have very real chances of being eliminated.

In whichever case, I am sure he will not consult tournament referee in the middle of the match.

if Fed wins the first 6-4, he could permit himself to lose the next two 6-4 6-3 no?

Not everyone can be nadal :)

Btw nadal is clearly the worst player in the tournament, at least verdasco is winning some sets
That's because Nadal is injured. A healthy Nadal sweeps the floor with everyone, including Fed. Get your facts straight.

I liked the fact Murray did that. It's the way he plays tennis. Calculating, playin percentages all the time. It makes up for his lack of a forehand and second serve most of the time.

What Federer needs to do is get focused, get motivated, and give it his absolute best shot and try to play his best tennis

And then tank the final set.

Not at the Masters Cup. What is his injury this time? Please tell me, cause you are not only making fun of yourself with the injury crap, but also unintentionally make a remark that could be read as a very cynical comment to Nadalfans who always complain about Rafa's injuries.

I was joking, can't you tell?
I saw this many times on this board. I didn't say that he was injured even when he lost at RG this year.

Nadal is NOT injured. Enough with this crap already. Since Cincy he's telling everyone he's 100%, so unless you consider Nadal a liar, stop writing crap posts.

And a HEALTHY Nadal has never won a set from Federer at the TMC. Get your facts straight.

Of course, though I think Fed has proved what he needed to prove in this event.

1) He secured the #1 spot.
2) He beat Murray in a 3-set match.

Totally agree.
I was nervous before the YEC started if he could do it but there were even some glimpses of the "old Fed" lately.

Now he needs to expand his lead in the rankings, create some room for himself to next year.

I believe Murray has lost. Now that Federer took the second set, his stats are

Games Won: 41
Games Lost: 34

If he gets bageled this last set, he will be at 41 and 40. That gives him a 50.62% which puts him .05% ahead of Murray.
