What's the purpose of overgrip?

I use overgrips myself too but at times I wonder what theyre really for.

If you use overgrip to build up grip size, add a bit weight, for more cushioning thats fine.

But if you use overgrip to 'protect' replacement grip or to always have a fresh grip then it doesnt make much sense -- replacement grip feels better to me and its playability lasts longer than 3 overgrips, thats about the price difference between the two. Well my hand doesnt sweat much maybe thats why.....

I use it to protect the replacement grip. I buy overgrips in bulk so its less than a $1.00 a grip. And I like the feel of the over grip.

That is reason #1 why I use overgrips, but I would use an overgrip even if I used a cushioned synthetic replacement grip becuase it is much easier to replace the overgrip than it is to replace the grip itself.

I buy rackets with a smaller grip and then use an over grip ($1) to build up. Gets you the new grip feel for cheap. Plus the chicks dig 'em

i like the feel of the over grip and whenever i dont use an over grip my sweat destroys the glue holding the grip on the handle and causes it to slip. So over grip for me. Plus i liek abbolats 4 3/8 grip with a over grip over it... PERFECT

I use it because I buy one size smaller and add an overgrip to bring it to size and for the extra cushion.

the main reason to use an overgrip is to achieve the "fresh grip" feel every time out...replacing overgrips is more cost effective then replacing the grip itself...wilson pro overgrips in the bulk pack come out to less than a buck a grip, while replacing the grip itself costs about 7-10 bucks...i usually replace the overgrip about every third time i play....makes perfect sence to me....

I use them because of the nice certain feel of them, that has tackiness and cushiony combined. This feel does not last long, thus the frequent replacement.

If I had that feel on the original grip, it wouldn't last long, and so there ya go. Overgrips justified!

When I don't know the purpose of something, I look at the label on the package. If it says "super absorbant" or "extra cushion" you know the overgrip is there to cushion and absorb, yes?

You mean just like what they put in the replacement grip description "super absorbent" or "extra cushion", no? =D

yea, easier to replace is a big reason, and you can choose the type of feel you prefer for the overgrip

i use overgrips coz i want to have a thicker and softer feel.

I use overgrips because I can change the tackiness based on the temperature. If it is hot I get an absorbent grip. If it is cold I get a nice tacky grip. Cheaper than buying different replacement grips.

Agreed! When choosing overgrip, I always pay particular attention to how the color will match

That just reminded me when I use White Wilson Pro overgrip and I thought it looked pretty similar to a Flexpoint Radical when I put it on my Liquidmetal. Now that I have tournagrip on, I get this feeling it looks something like Agassi's racquet.

but why do i feel that once u put an overgrip, somehow things r jus different?

i use babolat syntec replacement grip, and then wrap 1 wilson pro to protect (lengthen the life of replacement grip)

but my game just felt different...i kinda of lost it wif that overgrip...

i'm tempted to remove the overgrip... should i do that?
