I think his relatively low stature has something to do with it. He might be overcompensating by being a jerk.
The solution to this problem would be to fight fire with fire, and unleash on him a man even shorter, and more given to fits of Napoleonic rage. Of course, I mean we should release Richard Simmons and let him unload a sh/tstorm of b/tchslap on him. David won't know what hit him.

How much force can be used before it is unacceptable?
What if the line umpire shoved him back with equal force? Is that okay?
There is a reason most sports have a rule about no touching officials. Otherwise we end up in this grey area of what is okay and what isn't.

SV, have to agree with you totally. I was watching the match and when I saw it happening I got angry. How can a guy shove an official, someone entrusted to have influence on the outcome of matches?
To be honest I have no clue whose chair that is. Is that there for the linesman to sit and watch the line? Keep fatigue off their legs? If that is the linesman's chair, why the hell is DF putting ANYTHING there? That chair should be like the crease in hockey -- you don't go there -- personal space.
If that chair is for setting towels, then why the hell is the line judge standing in front of it? If that's the case the official should not be there. So where do player towels go? One on each side of the court? Do they have ball boys hold them? What is the standard or protocol?
Regardless whose chair that is, I'm of the belief a player should never touch an official. Well I'll soften it if it's in a kind way like putting a hand on a shoulder and helping or something. But never should there be touching/shoving. Immediate penalty of sorts from the highest official on the court for such behavior. A fine of 20k is nothing. A fine of 200k might hurt.
What hurts the most is all of us tennis freaks watching this and seeing our stock of DF plummet. I've always liked DF's work ethic on the court and seemed nice in the few interviews I've seen. Seeing this crap happen makes me sad and my opinion of him has shifted -- for the worse.

He clearly didn't intend to hurt anyone, and it wasn't that forceful, but it's definitely not acceptable, and he should have faced some kind of penalty.
There's no need to assume he's a hooligan, but it's definitely worse behaviour than swearing or breaking racquets, for which players are routinely fined.

You mean in cricket? If a player did the same thing as Ferrer in cricket, he'd get pulled in front of a committee and sanctioned in some way. Tennis is a bit too soft on their players methinks. Serena Williams should've been booted out of the sport for what she did.

My opinion of Ferrer has steadily declined over the last year, he's just a bit of a grump all round. And now this... I am no longer a supporter. Whoever he plays, I'm supporting his opponent.
