When will Murray take #3?

Comparing the Murray and Djokovic "ranking breakdowns" there are some startling contrasts. Murray has all of his points tied up in the late summer/fall where as Djokovic earned most of his points in the spring.

Most notably, Djokovic won the Aussie Open and Murray went out in the 1st round. Based on their current totals an early exit by Novak at the AO and a final or win from Murray would put them neck and neck in the rankings.

What also must be considered is the fact that Murray was not even at the MC last year, so there is a big bag of free points for him there, depending of course on how well he plays.

Especially considering there current relative forms (Novak seems to have lost a step and Murray is on fire) I forsee Murray taking the #3 spot as early as the US hardcourt swing, maybe even sooner.

If their current form continues, Murray will take #3 somwhere in the spring, maybe as soon as after AO.

But I expect Novak to get is back later, say after Wimbledon or during summer hardcourt season.

#3 or #4 doesn't make much difference, when it comes to draw anyway. Slipping to #5 would be a different story.

Also agree that Federer will have trouble defending the #2 from both players.

What you also have to remember is that Murray has 625 points (wins in St. Petersburg & Doha and QF in Paris) to defend between now and the AO, Djokovic has 5.

So although there is a the potential for a big swing at the AO, unless they both replecate their end of season form from last year there will still be quite a gap.

That being said, I think Murray has the potential to go to 3 or even 2 next year and really hope he does.

Nadal's benefitting the most from that. Nadal's best surfaces are their weakest surfaces. Thus he stays ahead of Federer since Murray and Djokovic are knocking Fed off on big hard court tournaments.

I anticipate Djokovic getting off to a very good start in 2009. The newer surface in Australia really suits his game very well. I see Djokovic and Murray as the 2 favorites as of now based on their game on that surface. Nadal and Federer are obviously both in the hunt as well. Im thinking a repeat for Djokovic though.

People are too quick to jump on bandwagons. In all seriousness, nobody apart from Roger and Rafa are able to remain consistent with good results, that's why they both break records left right and centre. Some others come along and play good for a while but then can't keep up.
Let's wait and see what happens with Murray. I am not convinced yet.

I doubt Djokovic will just go away. He seems to be having a sophomore slump, learning to deal with the expectations. Murray will also to deal with this, so it's premature to say Murray will leapfrog over Novak.

murray will take number 3 in 2009. It's just a matter of time. I don't see djokovic repeating his AO nor will he win any slams in 2009. I see him as having a safin type of career now that all the serbian fans are gone and we can see him for the type of player he really is.

I do think that murray will win a slam in 2009, either the AO or the USO but Wimby will be a toss up. It'll either be Fed, Nadal, or possibly a new champion in an amazing upset.

Overall ending in 2009 will be 1/2 fed or nadal 3 murray.

What is this supposed to mean? What serbian or any other fans have to do with what kind of player Djokovic is? Please stop with your hate motivated troll posts.

I think most people here know exactly what I am talking about. Not surprised that only YOU wouldn't understand. And please, do not call me a troll or anyone a troll when you are a huge troll yourself.

Djokovic had a serious case of the pressure getting to him and being expected to play well

I think he got a serious case of ego bashing when Safin took him out of Wimbledon

don't underestimate him, he's top 3

Murray's improved but he isn't top 3 good yet

1 slam final doesn't make you good, otherwise Tsonga would be goat ;)

Nobody understands this except you and couple other usual bigots.

There were never more than three or four regular Serb posters here at any time and I don't see how they could influence your expert troll opinion or make Djokovic the player he is not?

Again, please stop with trolling and with hate motivated insults towards Serbian people, posters and players.

Murray followed that up by winning Madrid. I guess Fed got serious case of pressure after losing to Nadal at Wimbledon. He got beat by Simon, Karlovic, and Blake. lmao

i didn't know you stored statistics in your ass cause it seems like that's where you pulled that from. I don't know how many serbian fans there were at any one time, and neither do you, but I know that in the beginning of the year there was a lot of trash talking towards Federer. I can sorta take it from Nadal fans cause at least Nadal was number 2 and had been number 2 for a very long time, but Serbian fans were very rude.

And even now you're very rude by coming into every Federer thread to make a lame statement that has nothing to do with the thread. Please stop acting like you're not a troll. Normal people don't come into every thread about Federer to call everyone a *******. That's not troll behavior??! LOL. And of course you cry when someone says something less than praise worthy about Serbian players. Whine some more please.

Are you living in reality? because, as I recall, in the most important HC grand slam event, Federer gave both of them some tennis lessons.

Also, Murray is slowly becoming a grat all-around player, and I expect him to be a force in the clay season. I don't think Nadal is going to be as dominate on caly in 2009 as he was in 2008, and he has tons of points to defend there (and barely anything to gain - only Rome).

Ummm, correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Nadal lost to these two players as well (more than once, in Blake's case)?

I am not complaining on every thread about Federer, only on ones that are extremely stupid and completely worthless. The only rude behavior I saw during and after AO was from *******s who first bashed Tipsarevic for giving poor, tired Federer a difficult match, and than could not stand the fact that their precious god lost one of his GSs. You have to realize that this is not a Fed worship fanboy forum, and should adjust your behavior accordingly.

Also I don't have problem when someone talks bad about Serbian players with some argument and common sense. I am first here who said that Murray will likely be #3 in the first half of next year, but I "whine" when regular bigots, like yourself, start with the hate talk and insults towards the whole nation. So again, you have to realize that this is not a Serb haters forum and should adjust your behavior accordingly.

Here's what Murray had to say:

ATP Tour - Murray: I'm still long way off top three
Eurosport - Mon, 20 Oct 15:33:00 2008

Andy Murray has insisted that despite winning successive Masters titles, he is still far behind the big three elite of the men's game.

More StoriesMagic Murray takes Madrid title
"I've beaten [Roger] Federer, [Rafael] Nadal and [Novak] Djokovic, but I'm still a long way behind the top three," Murray said after muscling to the Madrid Masters title with a 6-4, 7-6 (6) title victory over France's Gilles Simon.

"I've played great the past three months," added the 21-year-old who avenged his US Open final defeat to Federer by beating the world number two in the Madrid semi-finals.

"But those guys have been unbelievable the past couple of years. They are so consistent on every surface. They've been awesome and I'm not close. I've got a lot of work to do."

Murray, who has now won four titles this year and clinched the Cincinnati Masters in the summer, said that his weekend win over Federer extracted a big emotional toll.

"After playing Saturday it was tough for me, I was mentally tired," said the world number four. "My legs felt a bit heavier today, due in part to the situation I was in. The lactic acid builds up.

"I didn't come here expecting to win the tournament. I'd practised very well but there is a difference between that and playing well. But now I'm building some more confidence."

The victory in just over 90 minutes turned on the big serve of the Scot, who fired ten aces and became the first British player to win four ATP titles in the same season.

His Madrid success occured just three months after he won the first Masters shield of his career at Cincinnati. He also claimed the 2008 titles in Doha and Marseille.

Despite living in Spain as a teenager for more than a year Murray had to apologise to the crowd.

"I was here but I never learned proper Spanish. I promise that if I have to stand up here next year, I'll make the victory speech in Spanish," he said.

But Murray admitted that the 2009 transformation of the indoor event into an outdoor tournament on clay for men and women, which will be played in the run-up to the French Open in May, might limit his future title chances at a new venue in the city.

"I'm not much of a clay-court player so I'm not sure if I will be up here again," he confessed. "I will certainly make it my business to try and improve."

Murray will play next week in St Petersburg in the defence of his 2007 title while Simon said he might rest instead of playing in Lyon, saving his final run for a possible spot in the Masters Cup for the Paris Masters one week later.

"My tough [semi-final] against Rafa was one reason I lost," said the man who is now just one spot away from qualifying for one of four remaining vacant spots in Shanghai at the season wrap-up.

"I was really tired today. Andy knew it, he just wanted to make me run, right-left."

Actually, yes you are complaining on every fed thread unless you're sleeping. you have absolutely nothing better to do than troll in fed threads.
So what if people want to talk about Federer, what does that have to do with you? Why do you feel the need to put Federer fans down in Federer threads all the time? And now you complain about Serbian fans being grouped together. Puh-lease. Look in the mirror and rectifiy yourself. The problem is you.

Now you are flat out laying. As I said, I complain only on ridiculous, over the board threads about Federer. Unfortunately there are lots of them around and there are lots of people fed up with them, not just me.

Yet again you prove to me that you don't have a common sense, you are obsessed with hate and there is no point trying to talk reason with you.

All I am asking you is not to use the terms Serbia and Serbian here any more. Please be at least civil enough and talk about tennis without bashing whole nations and promoting hate and discrimination.

all the serbian fans are gone and.

Not actually true,I may disagree with him or dislike some things gj011 says but he's here the whole time regardless of whether Djokovic is winning or losing at the moment,he never disappears when Novak loses.I'm from Serbia as well which makes me a Serbian tennis fan and I post here all the time, that guy Satch as well so I'd say you're wrong.Furthemore just cause we're from Serbia doesn't mean some of us don't appreciate or like Fed or other players(I'm actually a big Fed fan as you probably know and one other Serbian poster here-Satch is a fan of Fed as well).

Hmmm who just got thumped in Madrid by Simon?

Ohhhhh thats right. Nadal. LMAO!

A win in a 3d set tiebreak is not a thumping in any way,it's a close match which could have gone the either way but in the end the guy who played those crucial, big points better walked away with the win.

Thumping-French Open final 2008. 6-1, 6-3, 6-0. Result is a.k.a thumping, or opening a can of whoop***!

Yes that was one example of thumping, another would be Nadal's loss at AO this year at Tsonga's first semifinal in his career. But yes Simon's win over Nadal wasn't thumping in any shape or form,it was a very tight match.

Definately sometime next year. Im not a finatic on ranking points, so I cant guess exactly when. But if Djokovic fails to defend his AO, thatll take a huge toll.

Yeah,Murray has a lot of points to gain at AO(lost in the first round to Tsonga) while Djokovic has to defend an AO title and overall a lot of points in the first part of the season.

Murray followed that up by winning Madrid. I guess Fed got serious case of pressure after losing to Nadal at Wimbledon. He got beat by Simon, Karlovic, and Blake. lmao

Pressure? Disagree, more like the dissapointment of a very tough loss in his favourite slam, anyone would be affected by that but he still rebounded and won USO title after that when many people thought he was done.

Ah, I didn't catch that. That does change things a bit. Also what I just noticed is that Novak doesn't have any points from the MC last year. So they will both be going into that tourney with nothing to lose.

Considering all that I imagine Djokovic will be able to hold on maybe longer than I thought. Who knows though, anything can happen in the next few months.

That is a very typical thing Nadal would say. Not Fed. You would know if you followed his interviews.

I actually like watching both players, even though Murray is my favorite. All I'm saying is not just because another player is classy, you can't say he learned it from Rafa. Murray is his own man and he seems to be acting more positive ever since he dumped Gilbert and got his team.

It's pretty easy to be humble when you are winning. We'll see if he continues with this attitude if the wheels fall off. Again, where did you get this idea that Murray learned this from Nadal? Did he ever say, "I'm going to act like Nadal now?" Next you'll be telling us that Nadal's topspin has solved the global financial crisis.

Murray will overtake Novak in the spring, maybe after AO or indian Wells. After that it'll be big competition till the end of year between the two. Whether that's for no. 2 or no. 3 depends on whether Fed gets back into his God mode, or slips further
