My family and I just got back from a trip to New Zealand. One of the best wines my wife and I tried was from a Cabernet Franc from Straight 8 Estate. Highly recommend!

I usually see lack of sleep correlated with weight gain rather than weight loss.
Being awake in a state of angst burns more calories than being asleep and having a stressful dream. So in your case, the calorie deficit is probably being offset by confounding variables, such as increased frequency of late night runs for burgers, fries, and soda. Or beer or wine.

I'm trying this Frescobaldi Castiglioni Chianti 2022. It's young, fruity, soft, fragrant and beautiful. It entices with notes of wild berries and fresh flowers and is immediately rewarding. Elegant, smooth, it's ideal for both red and white meat dishes as well as for medium-aged cheeses.

A commitment to viticulture and to agriculture in general has always been a prominent hallmark of the Frescobaldi family, who have been producing wine in Tuscany for seven hundred years, beginning in the early 1300s. Thanks to the favourable soil and climate, Chianti Castiglioni reflects the characteristics of an area that represents and presents itself as a soft, pleasantly fruity wine noted for its strong and well-defined personality.

Why does Standard Drinks = 7.7? That implies only 97 mL (3.5 oz.) per glass. Restaurants go out of business for lesser sins than such penurious pours.

I'm having Paul Jaboulet Aîné Ventoux Rouge. It reminds me of Bordeaux wine: soft and elegant. I love it. It's discounted from 18 to 16 bucks.

Product description

One of the best known producers of the Rhone Valley is Paul Jaboulet Aine. They produce an array of high quality wine from various appellations within the Rhone. Their Ventoux Rouge is from a vineyard dominated by Mont Ventoux. The red wine produced here is 80% grenache and 20% syrah. Average age of the vines is 35 years. The juice is fermented at a relatively low temperature to preserve the juicy fruit characters and soft tannins. The finished wine exhibits great balance and notes of rose petal, red berries and dried flowers.

A cracking little Ventoux that’s been made as a juicy, up-front, “drink now” red, with no ambition other than to be fresh and delicious. Grenache is dominant in the blend - the pervasive ripe wild raspberry character is a “dead-set” giveaway. Splash it around generously among friends, wash down some good rustic food with it, or just sip it selfishly by yourself! Whatever you do - don’t overthink it, drink it!

As recommended by my tennis friend, I'm going to try this Portuguese red wine:

Coutada Velha

Signature Red Blend

A Portugese blend of Aragonez, Trincadeira & Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has an intensity to it that is balanced by freshness. Displaying flavours of complex spices, blackberries, plums and truffle, the wine is Harmonious, with a long finish.

Portuguese reds have gained great favour with Australian customers in recent years. Their “honest to goodness” generosity and value has proved to be irresistible. These wines have been mainly in the commercial, high volume, low price sector. So, what happens if you kick it up a notch or two? What kind of wine do you get if you pay, say, up to $20? If it’s Coutada Velha Signature you can be sure that you are getting a wine that is not only extremely well made and enjoyable but also presents outstanding value on the world scale. A blend of aragonez (tempranillo), trincadeira and cabernet sauvignon, the smoothness and carry of the wine is immediately apparent. Flavours of ripe blackberries, fresh cherries, spice and plums build relentlessly. High class oak plays its part, also. There’s a top note of fruitiness over a “fullish” body. The whole package is very complete, complex and satisfying. A wine of this quality for the price deserves an extra point or two.

Interesting Facts

  1. Over half of the world's supply of cork is grown in Portugal.
  2. With its bulk wine production, the region of Estremadura produces more wine than any other region in Portugal.
  3. The region of Estremadura is known locally as Oeste, which means West.
  4. The soil in much of Southern Portugal is alluvial, which is very fertile and perfect for getting lots of fruit.
  5. Traditional wine in the Alentejo region is aged in clay pots.
  6. A large portion of the wine in Southern Portugal is made in cooperatives that make wine for many producers at the same time.
