Who else thinks the ATP Facebook page is over posting about Federer and Nadal?

I am a fan of Nadal and Roger's my (distant) second favourite player. It's nice to read about them. But, surely tennis isn't just about them. I am getting a bit fed up of constant Fedal posts on the ATP Facebook page like other players aren't worth talking about. 'Look what Roger Federer did this week', 'Relive Nadal's 2005 exploits' blah blah blah!

If the ATP wants tennis to be more than just about some of their cash cows, they should be promoting other players too, especially because they don't have good following. How would an average fan support another player when their Facebook feeds about tennis are bombarded with 2-3 players!

We, as tennis fans, are lucky that Federer is still playing and continuing his rivalry with Nadal. They are sure to retire in next few years. So, why not get causal fans get familiar with other players? There are so many players on the ATP tour and some of them would get good support from fans if only they get half as much publicity as Fedal. And the ATP would benefit from it the most as more fans would flock to watch lesser known players. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray are already very well known to the public and don't need more help from the ATP.

Read it again. Nadal is my favourite player. Federer is a distant second, Not a close second favourite player. Nishikori is my third favourite player.

There are many casual fans who are fans of both Federer and Nadal, but those of us who really into it usually like one more than the other. And then there are those who like one and hate the other. Fans come in all sizes.

And this thread isn't about Federer or Nadal but the ATP Facebook page posting way too much about them. More than half their posts feature either Federer or Nadal.

Players have to create interest themselves by winning slams. As long as Federer and Nadal (and Djokovic, Murray and Wawrinka when they return) are the only ones winning slams, they'll hoover up all the attention.

Basically, they've earned it with their results. If other players want the same shine, beat them at slams and then actually win some of those slams. You'd be surprised how much the ATP would love to jump on the bandwagon of someone who could do that.

You're getting unfair stick here - your post is perfectly rational and the issue certainly worth discussing.

I think the ATP approach stems from the fact that obviously Fedal has been the story of the year. Also the Laver Cup team marketed brand Fedal to such effect (probably the success of that approach took even them by surprise) that it convinced ATP promoters that they should adopt the same approach. As you say though it's a time limited approach and also one that can't be replicated. You can market Brand Fedal but you certainly can't create it. Plus I find the whole situation where the AO and US Opens are closely involved with the organisation of the Laver Cup and then heavily promote the Fedal brand a little cosy - I'm surprised more of the tennis media haven't looked at this.

Trouble is the ATP's have made attempts to promote the Next Generation without much success and obviously took a hammering with the opening ceremony fiasco. It's also hard when the "second row" of players behind the big 3 or 4 or whatever you want to call them seem largely content to play second fiddle (Berdych) and/or are better known for their private lives (Dimitrov). Dimitrov is apparently planning to release an autobiography - how ridiculous is that? Only Warwinka seems to have not fallen into that trap. It may be also that the Djokovic/Murray approach of promoting super fitness and athleticism deprives people of that human connection that you need in an individual sport.

So I'd agree with you totally about the limitations of the ATP approach - I'm just not sure what I'd recommend they do instead.

Hooking up with Sharapova doesn't count since the relationship ultimately went south.

EDIT: Actually, maybe we can have more insight about his supposed fling with Williams which ALSO went south, and spectacularly drew the ire of that alpha-female.

but it seems to me that the overall tone of those messages (you're talking about the ones appearing at the bottom of the ATP webpages, right ?) sounds a bit too cheesy to be real...

Tennis IS mostly about them. The recent US Open made last minute adjustments to their court to favour Nadal. All the courts are nearly the same that way nowadays. The more Nadal and Federer are playing the big matches, the more money the ATP and the venues and their advertisers make. Nadal leaving in the 3rd round would be disastrous. This has been going on for years. It's not so much about tennis as it is about revenue now.

Seeing that post on the ATP FB concerning Rivalries where it showed Federer 4-0 against Nadal this year must have been upsetting.

I know Eurosport have been quite irritating with the Fedal clips, usually shown during a commercial break. And I wouldn't mind at all if they were showing some stunning points but they were just displaying slow motion of Fed's and Nadal's entrance, running, single shot, fist pumps and winning celebrations. PCB match is more entertaining than this crap compilation they keep showing over and over again.

I don’t even like Nadal but I was very interested in their doubles match at the Laver Cup. Why are some so upset because of the media coverage showing Nadal and Federer comradery? It brought attention to the game of tennis. Some fans are obsessed with their fav getting the most attention and can’t handle it if they some other player is getting more attention.

I'm well aware of their drawing power, but without the rest of the tour, FEDAL would be nothing! Other players should be more than just FODDER for the so called greatness of these 2 who've owned it for over a decade; being the standard bearers even when down and out with injuries! That's what I find appalling! The rest of the tour has to be PO'd! Money's flowing, but sometimes all we hear about is Fedal whether they win or not and I know I'm well sick of it like a lot of people! I won't have any regrets when they finally leave the stage! I've dealt with other faves who fall into obscurity due to not playing, but they're still revered by some; BORG, Lendl, & Navratilova! Fedal will have that mystique, but I don't need to see them play even for 2 more years; just go!

This doesn’t even make any sense at all. It seems impossible, really. Seems more like a messageboard signaling of neutrality to add a sense of ethos to one’s posts.

Agreed. It's mind numbing. Nishikori by far the most supported player in Asia due to his God status in Japan so surely some information on Kei would be nice.
