Many votes are gonna be just trolling or wishful thinking.

I find it funny Sunny thinks so highly of Cilic. Cilic is by far the weakest player (or maybe it's Thiem). Nadal's main problem will be Sampras who could beat him.

If he somehow defeats Sampras, on a high bouncing hard court over best of 5, Nadal would have a field day pounding the beautiful one handed backhand IMO.

I mean Safin, not cilic. :D

Nadal 's Qf opponent Safin, then Semi final opponent Sampras, then the final ....

I think we will have a Federer vs Sampras final with Federer defeating Sampras :p

We r overrating Nadal to the extent that we expect Federer to beat Djokovic and then lose to Nadal ? Federer and Djokovic are 11 and 12 time HC champs for god's sake, if they win over their opponent's peak versions then definetly they are playing at a level where they will win over Nadal ....

Federer would probably beat everyone else but Nadal. It doesn't matter if he's won the tournament 5 times and Nadal (only) 4 times. Nadal has a match-up advantage over Federer that no one else in the draw does.

So, if Sampras beats Nadal, which is very possible, he'd lose to Federer in the final. If Nadal beats Sampras, he'd likely beat Federer too. Djokovic has a better chance of beating Nadal in the final IMO.

Semis - Nadal over Sampras, Djokovic over Federer
Final - Djokovic over Nadal

The players with modern equipment including poly strings and modern training methods/nutrition will fare the best. I don’t know how to compare players across different eras and erase the handicap of previous generations playing with outdated technology like 85 sq inch racquets and all-gut strings. Just comparing players in their peak, the modern players have an advantage as the game keeps evolving.

When I watch Nineties and Eighties Slam final matches on replay now, they look very outdated in terms of technique and particularly movement/footwork even though when I watched them live, they were thoroughly entertaining and the peak level of the sport.

For me, the toughest choice is deciding the winner of the Federer-Djokovic semifinal if they are both in their peak and both have sky-high confidence. That might be the best match of the tournament and the winner would win the final against Nadal. If I were doing the seeding, they would be the top seeds and be in opposite halves of the draw so that they can meet in the final.

Do you mean Djokovic over Nadal in the final? He can't beat Federer in the semi final and then beat him again in the final. Unless you just like watching Federer lose ;)

Yes, typo. Federer used to be a very arrogant young man in his prime if you heard his interviews and it has been fun to watch the arrogance slowly get knocked out of him by Nadal and Djokovic in the last decade.

In that case Federer would still win, his confidence is greater than Djokovic's at the USO, the 2015 Federer was a shadow of his peak self 10 years before.

According to your theory we will have a Nadal vs Federer final at the USO which has never been seen before.

I bet on Federer to win with his 97 Bazooka .... :happydevil:

Peak Nadal pounded the beautiful backhand at all Slams except USO, roflmao.

But loses to 2004 or 2006 Federer :D

Actually Nadal would be very lucky to reach the semis but cannot reach the Finals I assure you.

Problem is that in these hypotheical matches people just teleport Sampras of the 90s, Federer of mid 00s to 2010 to face Nadal, but thats not how it would happen. If they are all at their peak, then it means they are all of the same age, growing up with the same equipment, Federer would be using a bigger racquet and so would Sampras. If Nadal was a better hard courter than Sampras/Federer/Djokovic then he would have made more HC Slams than them, but then he isn't, so there is no chance he can reach the finals in a realistic scenario.

Plus historically Nadal has never beaten both Federer+Djokovic to win the USO, in 2010 novak took out the defending champ roger who most probably would have beaten nadal in the final (mindblock and such things wouldn't have mattered), in 2011 djokovic beat both atgs back to back, now that is a commendable performance, nadal in 2013 also did not face both ATGs back to back, his later 2 wins were vulturing, so I dont see Nadal beating 2 or 3 ATGs back to back back to win the USO.

I’m just telling it like it is. Peak Hewitt was super fast and he was also a wall and very very consistent. Djokovic would have smashed at least 10 rackets.

Well said.

Nadal won't go past Safin, if he manages somehow then definitely Sampras will brake him.

Pete won his 1st slam at the USO and the last there, a total of 5 slams and 3 finals ..... he didn't win all that without having the power to take out vultures like Nadal.

Nadal doesn't beat peak Safin on hard. I know Sampras is a favorite here, but peak Safin could beat anyone on a given day. I'd say it's a dice toss between Sampras, Safin and Federer.

Another thing made to favour Federer :D

Except the French any draw will look to favor Federer, after all he has 8 wimbledons, 6 aus opens and 5 US opens plus some close defeats later one which suggests that his level was pretty high in his 30s too, such a guy will always be the odds on fav in these hypothetical matchups

Sunny014

Stats say that Pete Sampras is the most accomplished player at the US Open even today.

88.75% wins which is the highest even today (higher than even Federer's who is at 2nd).
5 Wins (joint 1st along with Fed + Connors)
8 Finals (joint 1st along with Connors + Djokovic).
9 Semi Finals only so this means a very high Semi->Final convertion ratio as well, won his 1st title here and the last one here as well.

Lol, imagine favoring Nadal over Pete .... :happydevil:

Love this. 10/10 for fun factor.
Nadal loses his semi to sampras or edberg. Edberg would be a bad match up for Nadal given his Ros position as Edberg volley skills would hurt him and Edberg loved NY as much as Rafa. Sampras not as good a volleyer but feel he would squeeze past Nadal in NY as he also loved Ashe like Rafa does.
Federer v Sampras/Edberg for me in final. Peak Edberg on hard was a bad match up for Pete. He would also be a bad match up for Federer as his kick serve to their BHs would be a major issue.
I am struggling between Sampras and Edberg. Probably will plump for the home player. Sampras for me.

Would be close. Nadal at USO easily one of top 5 ever. However Pete v baseliners in NY was very tough to beat in fact not sure he lost many to baseliners there bar Courier and Safin but Safin was a huge server anyway.

Nadal is top 5 recordwise but he cannot beat peak Djokovic there either. :X3:

Nadal has beat peak Djokovic there twice. Dont tell me a player ranked in the top 3 is not at his peak.
Federer has struggled post 2010 at US Open. So your argument falls down there and Safin had long retired. And Safin won the USO once so respectfully that is not enough to claim his peak does the job. Thats like saying Stich at his peak is better than Djokovic on grass!!!.
Actually on the list the two players with the best tools to down Nadal in NY or Sampras and Edberg. Mcenroe the other one not on the list who i would pick over Rafa in NY. They the only 3 who can exploit the one weakness in Rafa game...the ROS.
Federer if he was ultra attacking potentially could if he came to the net but Federer has not done that in so long i have to give the advantage to Nadal.
Djokovic not in any of the above league in NY he is a level down peak wise albeit he may have had success the Edberg.
Match ups matter and styles.

2010 and 2013 sounds good on paper but we both know that Novak in 2011 belted the same 2010 Nadal (same level) at the USO and everyone on earth knows that 2015 Djokovic is a better version technically to 2011 with more confidence, he would have made mincemeat of Nadal if they faced there..... !
