Both Wimbledon champions, but that's Novak's only grass title and he's questionable on the surface, whereas Hewitt has multiple grass titles and enjoys the surface. :)

Discuss. :p

The best version of Novak at Wimbledon (2011) kills any version of Hewitt at Wimbledon.

Hewitt might be competitive with Djoker any year before 2010, but it'd still be very close. Djokovic only loses to very talented players at Wimbledon (Berydch, Safin etc), not scrubs.

You have never saw Hewitt played. If you think Hewitt isn't good on grass then even an OLD Hewitt has no business in beating Del Potro, who beat Nole at the Olympic last year.

I've seen Hewitt play in his prime. Of course he's good on grass. It's his best surface. Heck, I might even favour him against Djokovic in a best of 3 format.

But in Wimbledon, Best Of 5.....different kettle of fish. Hewitt, even at his best, would struggle to take a set off post 2011 Novak at Wimbeldon.Prime Djoker would just be too much for Hewitt at a slam. Any slam.

Del Potro is a streaky, inconsistent player and always has been. On his day, he can beat anyone in the world on fast surfaces (though he's a hardcourt specialist). But he can also have baffling losses to players he shouldn't be losing too. It's impossible to know which Del Potro will turn up. I wouldn't read too much into even old Hewitt beating him in a best of 3 tune-up event.

lol, wut ? tomic and baghdatis easily took sets off 2011 wimby djoker and he didn't find it easy vs them, yet hewitt would find it difficult to take a set off him ?

I'm talking about Prime Djoker vs Prime Hewitt in a championship match at Wimbledon. The grass season is so short, it takes adjusting for most players. That's why someone like Nadal is more vulnerable in early rounds of Wimbledon, compared to the later rounds (semis, finals), where his is extremely hard to beat.

I guess in the earlier rounds, if Novak was still adjusting to the grass, Hewitt could trouble him (but likely still lose). But anything after the semis, and I don't think Hewitt would stand a chance at all.

those were the 4th round and QF matches , not that early ... and no, even 2011 novak in any round wouldn't find it easy vs hewitt ...

players like haas/berdych/safin who beat djoker at wimbledon are quite clearly inferior players to hewitt on grass ...

fact is you have no idea of how good prime hewitt was on grass ...

I basically think that the 2011 iteration of Nole would tend to beat any version of Hewitt on grass, but that if their primes co-aligned and they played a bunch of matches on the surface during it, it would be even or Hewitt would have the edge even. Djokovic is the better pure player but Hewitt's ability on a surface where he's won 7 titles and beaten Sampras and Federer in finals, compared to Djokovic's 1 (beat Nadal in final - also impressive) is a big equaliser. The h2h does look bad for Hewitt against Nole in general and even on grass but none of those matches occurred while both players were prime, though at least 3 of them did occur while Nole was in his.

Well you seem to be singing a different tune now, you have said in the past that the QF was an early round. You were then forced to edit through embarrassment of such a dumb comment in order to hide your stupidity.

Prime Hewitt was very good on grass, no doubt about it. But let's not forget he has only ever made it to one WIM final (won it) which is equal with Novak, but he has only made it to one SF in all his other attempts whereas Novak has made 3 SF and likely to add to that.

Not to mention Hewitt (when he was #1 seed) lost in the first round to a qualifier and Novak has never lost in the first round on grass.

When you consider grass is Hewitt's best surface and Novak's worst, it really speaks volumes to the calibre of player Novak really is.

Hewitt also went out in the first round in 2001 as the #5 seed.

I think to be fair, you have to judge in a pool of matches between the two because either one of them could win on any given day but if they played at WIM 10 times for example, I'd say Novak would take about 7/10 of them.

his best years occured between 2001-2005. in 2004 he did not reach the semis because he ran into federer and in 2005 he did not reach the final because he ran into federer again. hewitt did not lose to scrubs in slams in 2004-2005. in 2005 i think he could have won wimbledon without federer because roddick was not playing as well as the previous year

2000 he lost to Gambill in straights in the first round.
2001 he lost to Escude in the 4th.
2003 he lost to Karlovic in the 1st.

These are all part of his best years that you listed.

Novak lost in his semi's to Nadal, Federer and Berdych.

Federer would've stopped Novak in 07 if Nadal didn't and Nadal would've stopped Novak in 2010 if Berdych didn't.

2005 WIM, I think Hewitt would've had a great chance but I think Roddick would've been more confident against Hewitt and most likely played better in the final.

I thought that was the 3r match, not the qf, jeez, big deal ... atleast I don't stay under grand delusions like you were when you posted those obviously wrong stats for the RG 2008 final ...

if you read the posts to which I was replying to , there is really no need for me to elaborate further regarding hewitt vs djokovic. Also, fast HC is hewitt's best surface, not grass IMO.

I think 2011 Novak would beat any version of Hewitt on the grass but other than that I'd see most of their encounters being like their 2007 Wimbledon match, could go either way.

No he doesn't. Watch some clips of prime Hewitt on grass. He was a better grass-court player than Djokovic, much better.

Matchup wise Djokovic isn't really ideal for Hewitt though. He's at his best when he can counterpunch.

I'd say Djokovic would edge it, but Hewitt would do a lot better against offensive minded players.

Intersting question. On any other surface it would be a no brianer. Prime Djokovic beats prime Hewit easily anywhere else. However on grass it is a tough call. Djokovic has won Wimbledon but IMO he is probabIy the poorest grass courter since Kodes to win Wimbledon. They played in 2008 when neither was in their prime but Djokovic was closer, and Djokovic barely won in 5 sets.

Sure. And yet, last year, Hewitt took a set off Djokovic on his best surface, at the Australian Open (which also happens to be just about Hewitt's worst surface with clay). We're talking Djokovic fresh out of his 2011 year and Hewitt at 31, after a gazillion trips to the surgery table and a whopping ranking of 181.

So maybe you'd like to reconsider... ;)

To answer the OP: prime vs prime, Hewitt would very probably take Djokovic to the woodshed in the majority of their matches on grass. Expect routine straight sets beatdowns. Close sets, though, and a four-setter or two wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities.

Not a chance. Not even close. Hewitt simply doesn't have the weapons and couldn't outlast Novak either. 2011 Djokovic wins in straight sets. Hewitt has never come close to that level on grass. God, his main rival at W was Tim Henman?

Old hobbled Hewitt took prime Djokovic to four sets at the AO 2012. I have seen both of them play live during their primes and for me Hewitt was a much better grass court player.

So have I. The question however was who in their prime would win. 2011 Djokovic would run out a comfortable winner. He beat Nadal that year, let alone Hewitt. Hewitt is one of the weakest W champions of the modern era. It's actually a bit of a disrespectful question to even ask who would win.

^Yup, that's why Djokovic has only one grass title vs. seven for Hewitt. Anyway, the question ports on "prime", not "peak".

Who exactly did Hewitt beat in those 7 tournaments? I'd wager he didn't beat a Nadal in any of them. More like a Henman. Sorry but you just can't compare.

So what? Rosol beat Nadal last Wimbledon. Doesn't mean anything. I doubt Djok was taking it as seriously as he would a semi or final.

LOL. He wasn't taking it as seriously? How come Djokovic talked about winning the Olympics and was looking forward to doing so? How come he was crushed when he lost to Del Potro?

To answer the original question; I'm going to split this into years.
2001 (Hewitt)/ 2007 (Djokovic). Djokovic would win this.
2002 (Hewitt)/ 2008 (Djokovic). Hewitt would win this.
2003 (Hewitt)/ 2009 (Djokovic). Djokovic would win this.
2004 (Hewitt)/ 2010 (Djokovic). Hewitt would win this.
2005 (Hewitt)/ 2011 (Djokovic). Would be a tossup. I favor Djokovic a little over Hewitt though.
2006 (Hewitt)/ 2012 (Djokovic). Djokovic would win this.
