Why almost no tennis coaches can actually coach worth a damn.

Funny really, after 20 years coaching tennis I know so much more now than I did at the beginning and yet I now spend most of my time keeping it simple.

Back when I was a 20 year old coach throwing around biomechanics terminology seemed like a good idea so people would know I knew my stuff and be impressed. These days i pretty much never say stuff like that, at least not in real life!

Kiteboard as simona haleps coach against wozniaki match. Ist coaching call over.

Halep: she is just getting some extreme angles. I'm trying to stop her patterns but I'm losing a step on every ball.

Kite: nevermind about all that. Feel the snapback and the bevel and you will dominate by sheer will of the snap back.

Halep:...... errrrrr ok.

2nd coaching call over.

Bigservesofehands co-coach of halep along with kiteboard.

Halep: the snap back and bevel thing isn't working. I'm not even sure what that means.

Bssh: forget that nonsense. Now this is what you do. Take a ball machine right now in the next court over after you request a bathroom break. Hit ball as hard as you can with the post modern fh. Groove it for 5 min. Fall over as you hit it too. That gives more power. First strike atomic tennis.

Halep: but if I over hit and fall over i won't be in position to recover for the next shot.

Bssh: ahhh my grasshopper. She won't get it back. That's the beauty of my method.

Halep: ohhhhhh. I get it.
yup. They are not anal analysts like some of the posters here try to be watching the youtube videos, determining angle precise to half a minute.

A great thing to watch is when coaches come on court during during a WTA match and are mic'ed up. Just listen to the coaches. Some talk more than others but its all simple instruction. Nothing complicated. The level doesn't matter, the instruction stays the same.

I also think one issue in the coaching industry as a whole is that whilst a great number are well versed in the techniques of their sport, coaching organisations and NGB's don't do a good enough job with or go into enough depth regarding how people actually learn. Therefore a lot of coaches have decent sports specific knowledge, but less of an understanding of how to get those concepts across.

yes, a bit Ironic, but not really if you think about it using the Dual Objectives theory. As a Coach and Instructor, there is a lot to know and be up on, but one of those things is to know what is important and how to share these important things in an easy to understand context.

Basketball? LOL. you don't need any mechanic precision whatsoever. Totally different game. In tennis, if your wrist is 3 degrees off, the ball goes out. That is why most sports Don't have full time coaching staff PER PLAYER.
Will the NBA is going that direction as far as a coach let player.
