Why do members offer congratulations and best wishes on these forums

I'm seeing more and more threads where congratulations and best wishes are offered to the pros. My question is why?
Djoker announces he's going to be a father and you get posts after posts congratulating him. Same with players out injured - usually followed by best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Now unless the pros are actual members of this forum, what is the point?
Who are these messages actually directed at? Seems pointless.

It's positive sentiment to the fellow board members. People aren't expecting the pros to read the messages.

I agree. The idea is quite disturbing and needs to be studied.

Regarding Djokovic becoming a father, I'd like to congratulate everyone from Serbia, in fact all of Europe (except Spain). I also wish him a speedy recovery and wish him the best for the French Open.

I think it taps into the sentiment that we rec players have, that we would like to feel close to the pros. We might start threads congratulating them or encouraging them, but the intent is the same: to feel like part of their inner circle, even though we have absolutely no place in it.

I like the Nadal AO 2009 and USO 2010 outfits in your avatar.

You should also exempt Switzerland in Europe along with Spain.
Congratulations on successfully trolling OP's thread which had a genuine question and best wishes for returning to your troll cave.

I don't know, why do Americans clap in movie theaters?

It's just one of those things you say just because you want to say it, not because you want the pro to read it.
I only say it when the player I was rooting for lost, then I congratulate the opponent and for me it's some kind of passive agressive way of venting my frustration.

Pros do actually read tennis forums. They also post on tennis forums and have a Q & A with fans. They also monitor the forums. There was a death threat issued by a chinese forum member directed towards a pro player. Pros family members also loves reading and trolling forums.

Pro tennis players don't have enough time to watch the news, I doubt they would ever have enough spare time to browse through an obscure forum on a highly niche interest such as this.

Even when they're injured, you can bet they'll be rehabbing 24/7

'browse through an obscure forum on a highly niche interest ' ?! We are talking about tennis pros here.
And did you just call TW an "obscure" forum ? The heresy !! ;-)

That Happens?

It's just an instinctive human response to express feelings towards someone we feel familiar with even if we don't know them personally. Who knows, maybe expressions of good wishes will send nice, positive vibes in the direction of the recipient even if they don't know us from Adam or Eve! ;-)

Because after a great movie, the natural reaction is to clap after you've seen a great form of entertainment that actually made you really think. Some movies can be pretty powerful, plus it's incredibly hard to produce a great movie. Takes a lot of time, money, etc. What else would you do?

I thought the happiness of every multi-millionaire public figure hinged upon whether or not internet losers like us sent them our well wishes.

That's not true?

Some people on these boards seem to think they have some sort of connection with pro players be it through the racquet they use, shoes etc. or some other way. It's called delusional. So if a player is injured or wins a big tournament they somehow feel part of it, once again delusional.

Pro players don't give a flying f%#^ about anyone but themselves.

The more people follow them the more money they make, that's all that really matters.

Because you connect with them. It's very beta and I'm guilty of it as much as anyone. SIGH
Some of my friends post RIP/Congrats messages on their FB, no wonder they're still single and bitter.
