Why do pros wear quarter socks?

Every Pro wears quarter socks. All the juniors wear ankle socks in the lower levels. But getting to the national level the quarter socks kind of grows on you. Is it a subconscious heritage or is there an actual performance advantage?

For some of the pros I would imagine it's because they have a logo on them. I think it's also a trend thing, it seems to move from ankle to full by generation

Well it is a trend thing, but if you play on clay or synthetic grass, you just need crews unless you like having sand in your feet.

Good explanation . . . and this means that the Europeans and Latin players will probably stay with the quarters

I just switched to crew after years with footies. I switched because the nike crews I use are much thicker and it really helps with the cushioning on the hard courts. The only problem now is the tan line ;)

Unless you're playing nude, you ought to have several tan lines. I'd rather have the tan line from my socks than any of my other tan lines.

I do live in a nudist community...lol
Your point is right though, that's the best kind of tan line

I wear black quarter socks myself...i feel theyre comfy and they give added support around the ankles. Thats pretty much the only reason i wear them, however I can see why pros would wear them hence being sponsored :)

I suppose the Pros are trying for as little tan line as makes sense.

Posting only for myself, I prefer the "Quarters" (top of sock ends about 3cm above my ankle bone). I am accustomed to the "feel" after all these years ... and the tan line issue is reduced.

I played on clay all the time in Alabama (Juniors and College). Sweating as profusely as I did in that humidity, I'd either wear the Quarters ... or fold my Crews down to 1/3 their normal height. (If I didn't the soggy socks would end up flopping around on my shoes or dragging in the clay dust. Yuck!)

most pros wear "crew" socks, not "quarter" socks. I only wear crew socks when i play indoors, that way i dont get a tan line...and when im outside i wear "no show" socks.

Most pros wear crew socks because they like looking masculine.

Ha. Nice.

I wear crews mainly because I like how the sock feels around the ankle/lower calf. It keeps my Achilles tendon warm as well as keep the grit from har-tru out of my socks. I tried some shorter ones to help with the tan line thing, but hated all the grit that found its way in.

The high school team I coach think my high socks are funny, so I think the generational divide exists on this issue.

I have always been suspicious of the no show/ankle socks; they look like too much like cheerleader socks with the little pom pom at the back.

I wear crews because i wore the ASO braces on both my ankles, now, trying to strengthen my ankles i took them off (braces). So switching now to low cuts, btu i do notice the clay flicking up off my heel onto my leg, i liek the feel sometimes. Whatever...

No show/ankle socks are for women. Majority of men play with crews and the women play with ankle socks. Ankle socks on guys looks gay IMO.

Yes. Most players wear two pairs of socks to give them benefits. This gives more cushioning for the feet and ankles. The feet is protected from shock and blisters. The ankles are protected from twisting.
